Flight rescheduled earlier: compensation and refund

Flight rescheduled more than 1 hour earlier? It counts as a cancellation: refund or new flight and up to €600. Hotel, transfer and connection examples.

If your flight is rescheduled earlier by more than 1 hour, EU Regulation 261/2004 treats it as a cancellation: you can choose between a refund and another flight and, if you were told less than 14 days before, claim compensation of €250, €400 or €600 per passenger. That holds even if the earlier flight cost you a hotel night, a transfer or a connection. Here is how it works and what to do.

Flight brought forward: when it counts as a cancellation

A flight that leaves much earlier than planned causes the same trouble as a cancelled one: holidays, work and transport all have to be rearranged. That is why the rule is simple:

  • More than 1 hour earlier: the flight is treated as cancelled, even if the flight number does not change. You have the same rights as with a cancellation.
  • Up to 1 hour earlier: it is not a cancellation and there is no compensation. Make sure you still get to the airport in time for the new departure.

If the flight is brought forward by more than an hour, your rights are those of any cancelled and rescheduled flight: a choice between a refund, the earlier flight or another flight, care and, in some cases, compensation.

Flight rescheduled earlier: refund and compensation

A refund is always owed if you do not want to, or cannot, take the earlier flight. Compensation depends on when you were told and how many hours earlier the new flight leaves:

Notice given Compensation owed if the flight leaves…
14 days or more never: no compensation
7 to 14 days more than 2 hours before the original time
Less than 7 days more than 1 hour before the original time

Compensation is €250 up to 1,500 km, €400 from 1,500 to 3,500 km and €600 over 3,500 km outside the EU, per passenger, unless there were extraordinary circumstances. It comes on top of the refund: read the guide on refund or compensation.

Lost hotel, transfer or connection: three examples

Lost hotel night. Your 15:00 Dublin–Tenerife flight is moved to 06:00 and you find out 5 days before. From Galway you cannot get to Dublin Airport that early, so you choose a flight the next day and lose the first hotel night you had already paid for. You are owed €400 compensation and can claim the lost night separately, with the receipt.

Wasted transfer. Your London–Dublin return moves from 20:00 to 16:30, with 3 days' notice. You take it, but the airport transfer booked for 18:00 is useless and you pay for a taxi. You are owed €250 and can claim the taxi fare back, again with the receipt.

Missed connection. You have two separate tickets: Edinburgh–Dublin landing at 09:00 and Dublin–Boston at 12:00. The second flight is brought forward to 09:30 with 10 days' notice, so you cannot make it. That is more than 2 hours earlier, so you are owed €600 for the Dublin–Boston flight, plus a refund or another flight. If both flights are on the same booking, the airline must also get you to your destination: read the guide on the missed connection.

What to do if your flight is brought forward

  1. Save the email or take a screenshot showing the date and time you got it: it proves the notice.
  2. Work out the change: the difference between the old and new departure times.
  3. Make your choice in writing to the airline: the earlier flight, another flight or a refund. Do not simply fail to turn up.
  4. Taking the earlier flight does not cost you compensation if the change goes beyond the limits in the table.
  5. Keep receipts for hotels, taxis, transfers and tickets lost because of the change.

If the change happens at the airport or on the day, also read the guide on a flight cancelled at the last minute.

Frequently asked questions about flights rescheduled earlier

My flight was brought forward by 40 minutes: am I owed anything?

No. A change of up to 1 hour earlier is not a cancellation and there is no compensation.

I took the earlier flight: can I still claim?

Yes, if it left more than 1 hour early and the notice and times fall within the cases in the table.

I cannot take the earlier flight: what should I do?

Ask in writing for a refund or another flight. If it was brought forward by more than 1 hour, you can claim compensation too.

Will I get the lost hotel night back?

Compensation is a fixed amount, but costs lost because of the change, such as a hotel night or a transfer, can be claimed separately with receipts.

I was told a month before: am I owed anything?

No compensation, but if the new time does not suit you, you can always choose a full refund or another flight.
