Hand luggage makes sense for short trips: no waiting at the carousel, almost no risk of losing it and it is often cheaper; a checked bag makes sense for longer trips, liquids over 100 ml or items that are not allowed in the cabin. The right choice depends on how long you travel, what you pack and your airline's rules. Here is how to decide.
Hand luggage or checked bag: the comparison
| Factor | Hand luggage | Checked bag |
|---|---|---|
| Time at the airport | No bag drop and no wait at the carousel | Bag drop before, carousel after |
| Risk of loss | Very low: it stays with you | It can be delayed, damaged or lost |
| Liquids | Usually containers up to 100 ml in a 1-litre bag | No security limit for everyday liquids |
| Sharp items | Knives, long-bladed scissors and tools are banned | Allowed if well packed |
| Power banks and spare batteries | Must travel in the cabin | Not allowed |
| Weight and size | Limited and checked at the gate | More weight, depending on the fare |
| If the flight is cancelled | You can rebook or leave straight away | You have to wait for your bag |
Prices, sizes and weights vary by airline and change over time, so always check the official website before you book. For low-cost carriers, see our hand luggage guides for Ryanair, Vueling and Wizz Air.
When hand luggage is enough
- City breaks and business trips of two or three days, such as Dublin–Edinburgh or London–Amsterdam.
- Flights with a connection: fewer transfers, less chance of your bag missing the second flight.
- When you need to get out fast: you walk out as soon as you land.
- When disruption is likely, for example on strike days: without a checked bag you can change plans more quickly.
Bear in mind that on many low-cost airlines the basic fare only includes a small bag that fits under the seat; a cabin trolley for the overhead locker costs extra. Think about what you actually need.
When a checked bag is worth it
- Long trips or travelling with children, when clothes will not fit in a cabin bag.
- Full-size liquids: sun cream, shampoo, or a bottle of wine to bring home.
- Equipment: skis, golf clubs, walking poles, tools, kitchen knives.
- When you do not want to carry a bag through security, shops and distant gates.
Never put power banks, e-cigarettes or spare lithium batteries in the hold, and keep valuables, documents and essential medicines with you.
How to choose in 5 steps
- Count the days and list what you really need.
- Check liquids and banned items: liquids over 100 ml or sharp objects mean a checked bag.
- Read your fare: see what is included and what costs extra on the airline's website.
- Add bags online when you book: at the airport it usually costs more.
- Measure and weigh at home: an oversized bag at the gate goes in the hold with a fee.
If your checked bag does not arrive
If your suitcase is delayed, damaged or missing, report it straight away at the airport baggage desk with a PIR form, then send a written claim to the airline: within 7 days for damage and within 21 days for a delay. All the steps are in our guide to lost luggage.
And if your flight also arrived 3 hours or more late, was cancelled with less than 14 days' notice or you were denied boarding, you may be owed €250, €400 or €600 per passenger, whatever luggage you had. With DelayFlight24 you can check for free in 2 minutes: you pay nothing upfront and our fee is 25% + VAT only if you get compensated. Start from our delayed flight page.
Frequently asked questions about hand luggage and checked bags
Is it better to travel with hand luggage or a checked bag?
For short trips hand luggage is quicker and easier; for long trips, large liquids or equipment you need a checked bag.
Can I pack a power bank in my checked bag?
No. Power banks and spare lithium batteries must always go in your hand luggage, never in the hold.
What happens if my bag does not fit the sizer at the gate?
It is usually put in the hold and you pay a fee, often higher than if you had added a bag online.
Is my checked bag covered if it is lost?
The airline is liable for damage, delay and loss under the Montreal Convention, up to about €1,800 per passenger. For valuables, take out insurance or keep them with you.
Does having a checked bag change my delay compensation?
No. Compensation for delays, cancellations and denied boarding applies to every passenger, with or without a checked bag.
