Air Canada Rouge compensation: which flights from Europe qualify for €600

Air Canada Rouge is the leisure arm of Air Canada. In summer 2026 it returned to the Atlantic with Boeing 737 MAX 8 aircraft, flying from Toronto to Dublin, Porto, Palma de Mallorca, Toulouse, Reykjavík and Edinburgh. If your Rouge flight out of Europe arrived three hours late, was cancelled at short notice or was overbooked, you may be owed €600 per passenger.

There is one catch. Rouge is a Canadian airline, not a European one, so Regulation (EC) 261/2004 applies only to its flights departing from the EU, Iceland, Norway or Switzerland. The return leg from Toronto is not covered by the EU rules.

Late into Toronto

You left Dublin, Porto, Palma or Toulouse and reached Canada three hours or more late.

3+ hours on arrival

Cancelled departure

Rouge cancelled your flight from Europe with less than 14 days' warning.

Under 14 days' notice

Bumped at the gate

The 737 MAX was full and you were left behind at a European airport.

Payable straight away

Not covered

Rouge flights leaving Canada, the US or the Caribbean, and disruption caused by proven extraordinary circumstances.

Toronto departures excluded

How much Air Canada Rouge pays on flights from Europe

Every European Rouge route is longer than 3,500 km, so the top band always applies, whatever the fare.

Rouge flight Distance Compensation
Reykjavík–Toronto About 4,200 km €600
Dublin–Toronto About 5,300 km €600
Porto–Toronto About 5,600 km €600
Toulouse–Toronto About 6,200 km €600

Each traveller on the booking has their own claim, including children with their own seat. A family of four on a Dublin–Toronto flight that landed four hours late could recover €2,400 between them.

Air Canada Rouge flight delayed: what to do

Rouge flies its European routes seasonally with few aircraft, so a late inbound from Toronto often means a late departure back.

  1. Keep your boarding pass, including the one in the Air Canada app, where Rouge flights carry an AC number.
  2. Screenshot app alerts: the first reason given often differs from a later rejection.
  3. Note when the doors open in Toronto, as that is the arrival time that counts.
  4. Ask for meal vouchers at the desk and keep receipts for anything you buy.
  5. Do not swap your claim for Aeroplan points or vouchers before knowing what you are owed in cash.

Care while you wait in Europe

Situation Your right
Departure four hours late (flights over 3,500 km) Meals and drinks
Departure moved to the next day Hotel and transfers
Delay of five hours or more Refund if you decide not to fly

Missed connection in Toronto

On a single ticket from Europe via Toronto, what counts is your delay at the final destination. Read more on our page about Air Canada Rouge delay compensation.

Retimed flights. A big change to your Toronto departure time made a few days before travel can count as a cancellation. Details on our page about Air Canada Rouge cancellation compensation.

Overbooking on Air Canada Rouge

Checked in on time in Dublin or Porto but refused boarding because the flight was full? €600 is due on the spot, plus a refund or another flight. It is not due if you were turned away for missing documents, such as the eTA needed to fly to Canada. See our guide to Air Canada Rouge overbooking.

Air Canada Rouge strike: the August 2025 walkout

In August 2025 a CUPE flight attendants' strike grounded Air Canada and Rouge for several days. The EU Court of Justice has ruled that a strike by an airline's own staff is not an extraordinary circumstance (case C-28/20), so passengers whose cancelled flight left from Europe are normally entitled to compensation. Air traffic control strikes are different and rule it out.

Air Canada Rouge refused your claim? The usual reasons

Usually payable
"Technical issue with the aircraft"

Faults and maintenance are part of running a fleet, even on 737s new to Rouge.

EU Court of Justice, case C-549/07
It depends
"Canadian rules apply"

True for flights out of Toronto. For a departure from Europe, EU law applies.

Usually payable
"Crew shortage"

Rostering is the airline's own responsibility, not an outside event.

Often not payable
"Winter storm in Toronto"

Only valid if the weather really grounded that flight. We check the records for the day.

Has Air Canada Rouge already said no? Rejections often mix up Canadian and European rules. Let us review your flight.

Rouge, Air Canada and flights outside EU rules

Rouge flights are sold on aircanada.com with AC numbers, "operated by Air Canada Rouge". Not covered by EU 261:

  • flights from Toronto back to Europe and Iceland
  • Rouge domestic flights and routes to the US, Mexico and the Caribbean

Edinburgh–Toronto falls under UK261, which mirrors the EU rules and pays £520 on this distance. Complaints there go to the CAA.

What you need

  • Booking confirmationWith the Air Canada booking reference.

Time limits

The Regulation sets no deadline: national law decides, as the EU Court of Justice confirmed in case C-139/11. Check your flight date.

How long payment takes

If Air Canada accepts, payment usually arrives within a few weeks; a formal demand or court action against a non-EU airline adds several months.

Delayed or damaged bags on Rouge

Baggage falls under the Montreal Convention. File a PIR in Toronto before leaving the baggage hall, then claim within 7 days for damage and within 21 days of delivery for delay.

Air Canada Rouge compensation: frequently asked questions

Does EU 261 apply to Air Canada Rouge?
Only on flights leaving the EU, Iceland, Norway or Switzerland, such as Dublin–Toronto or Porto–Toronto. Rouge is a Canadian airline, so its flights from Toronto to Europe are not covered by the EU Regulation.
How much compensation can I get for a delayed Rouge flight from Europe?
€600 per passenger, because all Rouge routes between Europe and Canada are longer than 3,500 km. You need to arrive at least three hours late and the cause must not be an extraordinary circumstance.
My ticket showed an AC flight number but the plane was Rouge. Does that matter?
No. Rouge flights are sold under Air Canada flight numbers and marked as operated by Air Canada Rouge. Your rights are the same and the claim is handled through Air Canada.
Does Air Canada Rouge still fly to Europe?
Yes. Since summer 2026 Rouge has flown seasonal 737 MAX 8 services from Toronto to Dublin, Porto, Palma de Mallorca, Toulouse, Reykjavík and Edinburgh. Schedules change from season to season, so check aircanada.com for current dates.
What about Edinburgh to Toronto?
That flight is covered by UK261 rather than EU 261. For a delay of three hours or more on this distance the UK rules provide £520 per passenger, unless there were extraordinary circumstances.
Can I claim for flights cancelled in the August 2025 strike?
If the cancelled flight departed from Europe, usually yes. The EU Court of Justice has held that a strike by the airline's own staff is not an extraordinary circumstance (case C-28/20).
I was refused boarding because I had no eTA. Am I owed compensation?
No. Missing travel documents are the passenger's responsibility, so denied boarding compensation does not apply. It does apply if the flight was overbooked and your documents were in order.
Air Canada offered me Aeroplan points instead of cash. Should I accept?
You do not have to. Compensation under EU 261 is payable in money unless you agree in writing to something else. Check what you are owed in cash before deciding.
What does DelayFlight24 charge for an Air Canada Rouge claim?
Nothing upfront. If we recover your compensation we keep 25% + VAT, so you receive €417 from €600. Legal costs are ours even if a case is lost, and if we recover nothing you pay nothing.
