In short

  • Delay: if you arrive 3 hours or more late, Iberia owes €250 to €600 per person, depending on the distance.
  • Cancellation: you are owed compensation if you were told less than 14 days before departure, on top of a ticket refund or an alternative flight.
  • Not owed for extraordinary circumstances (severe weather, air traffic control strikes). Technical faults and strikes by the airline's own staff usually are not extraordinary.
  • With DelayFlight24 you pay nothing upfront: if Iberia pays, you keep €173.75 out of €250 or €278 out of €400.

Iberia compensation: up to €600 for a delayed or cancelled flight

Iberia flies between London and Madrid several times a day and, through its Madrid hub, on to Latin America, Mexico and the United States. We have already handled claims for more than 800 Iberia passengers. The routes we see most are long-haul flights from Barcelona to Buenos Aires, Santiago de Chile, Miami and New York, in both directions. On flights that long, compensation reaches €600 per passenger; on European routes it is €250 or €400.

Iberia Líneas Aéreas de España is based in Madrid and belongs to the IAG group, so it is an EU airline. Under Regulation (EC) 261/2004 it owes compensation on flights departing the EU and on flights arriving in Europe from Latin America or the US, such as Buenos Aires–Madrid or Santiago–Barcelona.

Delay

You reach the final destination on your Iberia ticket and the doors open 3 or more hours after the scheduled time.

3 hours or more on arrival

Cancellation

Iberia told you less than 14 days before the flight and did not offer an alternative with almost the same times.

Under 14 days' notice

Denied boarding

The flight was full and Iberia left you behind even though you had a valid ticket and checked in properly.

Owed immediately

When it is not owed

When Iberia proves an extraordinary event outside its control, such as a severe storm or an air traffic control strike. Writing it in a reply is not enough: Iberia has to prove it.

Extraordinary circumstances

Just enter your airports and date and we will tell you within minutes whether compensation is due. Check your Iberia flight.

How much does Iberia pay? €250, €400 or €600 per passenger

The ticket price is irrelevant. What matters is the straight-line distance from your departure airport to the final destination on the booking, which means most Iberia trips to South America fall into the top band.

Distance Example Iberia routes Compensation
Up to 1,500 km London–Madrid, Madrid–Barcelona, Madrid–Palma de Mallorca, Rome–Madrid €250
1,500 to 3,500 km Madrid–Gran Canaria, Madrid–Tenerife €400
Over 3,500 km Barcelona–Buenos Aires, Barcelona–Santiago de Chile, Barcelona–Miami, Barcelona–New York €600

The amount applies to every passenger, including children with their own seat: two parents and two children on Barcelona–Buenos Aires landing 5 hours late could receive €2,400. All passengers can go on a single claim.

Iberia flight delayed: what to do straight away

More than half of the Iberia cases we handle start with a delay, often on a transatlantic flight. On a 12-hour journey a departure delay of two and a half hours can turn into more than 3 hours on arrival, or the other way round: what counts is when the doors open at your destination. While you wait:

  1. Save your boarding pass from the Iberia app or take a photo of the paper one.
  2. Keep Iberia's notifications: emails, texts and in-app messages showing times and reasons.
  3. Note the actual arrival time and, if you can, photograph the arrivals board.
  4. Ask for meal vouchers at the Iberia desk and keep receipts for anything you pay for.
  5. Do not accept Avios or vouchers in exchange for giving up cash compensation.

Care during the wait

Even when compensation is not owed, Iberia must provide meals and drinks, a way to communicate and, if the flight moves to the next day, a hotel and transfers. On a flight to Buenos Aires or Santiago the threshold is 4 hours.

Distance Care due after
Up to 1,500 km 2 hours
1,500 to 3,500 km 3 hours
Over 3,500 km 4 hours
Delay over 5 hours You can give up the flight and get the fare back

Missed connection in Madrid

Madrid-Barajas is Iberia's hub and the place where many travellers miss their onward flight. If London–Madrid–Buenos Aires was one booking and you reach Argentina 4 or more hours late, you are owed €600, based on the total distance from London to Buenos Aires. With separate tickets, each flight is assessed on its own. Read more on our page about Iberia delayed flight compensation.

Iberia flight cancelled: refund and compensation

More than one in three of the Iberia claims we receive concerns a cancellation. Iberia usually offers rebooking or a refund, but cash compensation is a separate right and often has to be claimed on its own.

Rebooking or refund

Always due: you choose between the first suitable flight, a later date or getting the ticket price back.

Compensation of €250 to €600

Added on top when Iberia cancelled less than 14 days before departure and there was no extraordinary circumstance.

Notice from Iberia Compensation
14 days or more Not due; you still choose between refund and new flight
7 to 13 days Due, unless the new flight leaves no more than 2 hours early and lands less than 4 hours late
Less than 7 days Due, unless the new flight leaves no more than 1 hour early and lands less than 2 hours late

Changed schedule. If Iberia moves your flight time substantially in the days before departure, the EU Court of Justice may treat it as a cancellation. Already refunded? See whether compensation is due too. More on our page about Iberia cancelled flight compensation.

Iberia overbooking: denied boarding compensation

Around one in ten Iberia claims we handle involves denied boarding, often on busy flights to Latin America. If nobody volunteers and you are left behind with a valid ticket, Iberia owes you compensation straight away, plus an alternative flight or a refund and care at the airport.

It is a different matter if the refusal was down to you: incomplete travel documents, no ESTA for the United States, or reaching the gate after boarding closed. Check your case for free or read our guide to Iberia overbooking and denied boarding.

Iberia strikes: when you are entitled to compensation

Strikes in Spanish aviation are common, especially around holiday periods. What matters is who is on strike. If Iberia pilots, cabin crew or other Iberia staff walk out, the EU Court of Justice treats the strike as part of the airline's normal activity and compensation is normally due (case C-28/20). If air traffic controllers or workers outside Iberia strike, that is an extraordinary circumstance: no compensation, but care and rebooking or a refund still apply.

Iberia rejected your claim? The most common replies

A refusal from Iberia does not close the case. These are the explanations we read most often and how the courts assess them.

Usually owed
"Technical incident"

Faults found during routine maintenance or in flight are an ordinary risk for Iberia and do not release it from paying. A hidden manufacturing defect reported by the manufacturer or the authorities is the exception.

EU Court of Justice, case C-549/07
It depends
"Strike"

A strike by Iberia staff usually means compensation is due. A strike by controllers or by workers outside the airline does not.

EU Court of Justice, case C-28/20
Often not owed
"Air traffic control restrictions"

Restrictions imposed by air traffic control can be an extraordinary circumstance, but they must genuinely have affected your flight at that time. We check the data before accepting the explanation.

Usually owed
"Late arrival of the incoming aircraft"

On Iberia's long-haul routes the same aircraft often arrives from another continent. A delay picked up on the previous leg is not enough: Iberia must prove an extraordinary event caused it.

Has Iberia already said no? Do not give up after the first refusal. We check whether the reason is true and, if not, follow up with a formal letter before action and, where needed, court proceedings. Check your Iberia flight.

Flights operated by Iberia Express, Iberia Regional Air Nostrum and Level

Not every flight sold under the IB code is operated by Iberia itself. Many domestic and European routes from Madrid are flown by Iberia Express, the group's short and medium-haul airline. Regional flights branded Iberia Regional are operated by Air Nostrum, an independent franchise carrier. Long-haul flights from Barcelona to Buenos Aires, Santiago, Miami and New York are sold under the Level brand and were for a long time operated by Iberia; Level has held its own operating licence since late 2024. Your booking names the operating airline, which is where the claim goes, but your rights are the same. In our form you can simply choose Iberia and we handle the rest.

Iberia compensation on flights from the UK, Latin America and the US

As an EU airline, Iberia must apply the Regulation on the way home too. Covered in both directions:

  • flights from Argentina, Chile, Peru, Colombia and Mexico to Spain
  • flights from Brazil and Uruguay to Spain
  • flights from the United States
  • flights from the UK to Madrid

Flying from London? An Iberia flight from the UK to Spain is covered by EU261 because Iberia is an EU airline, and the UK's own rules (UK261), with amounts in pounds, also apply to departures from the UK. We work out which is better for you.

How to claim from Iberia: on your own or with us

You can claim from Iberia free of charge using the claim forms in the customer service section of iberia.com, which has separate routes for delays, cancellations and denied boarding. Here is how the options compare.

On your own

It costs nothing, but you have to follow every Iberia reply and push back if you are refused. The next step is the national enforcement body of the country where the flight departed (the CAA for UK departures) or the courts, at your own time and cost.

With DelayFlight24

One online form, one digital signature. We handle the claim, the formal letter and any court case with our own lawyers. You only pay if you get paid: 25% + VAT. If the case goes against us, we pay the legal costs.

If Iberia has already turned you down

You can hand your claim to us even after a first no from Iberia. We review the reason and, if it does not stand up, challenge the refusal formally.

Documents to have ready

  • Iberia ticket or boarding passA photo or screenshot is fine.
  • Passport or IDFor each passenger, children included.
  • Messages and expensesIberia notices and receipts for meals, taxis or hotels.

Time limit for claiming from Iberia

The Regulation sets no deadline: the time limits of the country where you bring the claim apply, as the EU Court of Justice made clear (case C-139/11). Even an older flight may still be in time: enter the date and we will check.

How long does Iberia take to pay?

When Iberia accepts the claim, payment usually arrives within a few weeks. If it refuses and a formal letter or court action is needed, expect several months. We update you by email at each step and pass on your share as soon as Iberia pays.

Lost or damaged baggage with Iberia

Suitcases are covered by the Montreal Convention, not Regulation 261. Before leaving the baggage belt, fill in a Property Irregularity Report (PIR) at the airport desk. Then send your claim to Iberia within 7 days for damage and within 21 days of getting your bag back if it was delayed.

Iberia compensation: frequently asked questions

How much does Iberia pay for a delayed flight?
€250 per passenger up to 1,500 km (for example London–Madrid or Rome–Madrid), €400 from 1,500 to 3,500 km (Madrid–Gran Canaria) and €600 over 3,500 km, such as Barcelona–Buenos Aires or Barcelona–New York. You need to arrive at least 3 hours late for a reason that was not an extraordinary circumstance.
Is my Iberia flight back from Buenos Aires or Santiago covered?
Yes. Iberia is an EU airline, so Regulation 261/2004 also applies to flights departing Latin America or the US and landing in Europe. On these routes compensation can reach €600 per passenger.
My long-haul flight arrived 3 and a half hours late: how much am I owed?
With a delay of 3 hours or more, you are owed €600.
I flew Iberia from London: which rules apply?
Iberia is an EU airline, so a flight from the UK to Spain is covered by EU261. The UK's own rules, UK261, also apply to departures from the UK, with amounts in pounds. We check both and use the one that works best for you.
I missed my connection in Madrid: does Iberia owe me compensation?
Yes, if the flights were on one booking and you reached your final destination at least 3 hours late. The amount is based on the distance from your first departure airport to your final destination. With separate tickets, each flight counts on its own.
My flight was operated by Iberia Express, Air Nostrum or Level: does that matter?
No, your rights are the same because they are all EU airlines. The claim goes to the airline that operated the flight, shown on your booking. In our form you can simply choose Iberia and we take care of the rest.
Iberia refunded my ticket: can I still get compensation?
Yes. A refund and compensation are separate rights. If you were told about the cancellation less than 14 days in advance and there was no extraordinary circumstance, you can also receive €250 to €600 per person.
Does an Iberia staff strike give me the right to compensation?
Usually yes: the EU Court of Justice has ruled that a strike by an airline's own employees is not an extraordinary circumstance. If air traffic controllers or workers outside Iberia strike, compensation is not due, but care and rebooking or a refund still apply.
How long do I have to claim from Iberia?
The Regulation sets no deadline: the rules of the country where you bring the claim apply, so it varies. Flights from a few years ago can often still be claimed. Enter the date and we will tell you.
How much does DelayFlight24 charge for an Iberia claim?
Nothing upfront. If Iberia pays, we keep 25% + VAT: from €250 you receive €173.75, from €400 you receive €278. If court action is needed, we pay the legal costs even if the case is lost.
