JetBlue compensation: €600 on flights from Europe to the US

JetBlue Airways is a US airline built around New York JFK and Boston, best known for routes to Florida and the Caribbean and, more recently, for transatlantic flights. We have received more than 150 JetBlue claims so far, covering over 250 passengers. If your flight from Paris, Amsterdam, Dublin or another European city reached the US three hours late, or was cancelled at the last minute, you could be owed €600 per person.

The crucial detail: JetBlue is a US carrier, not a European one. Regulation (EC) 261/2004 only binds it on flights departing from the EU, Switzerland, Norway or Iceland, and UK departures fall under UK261. Your return from New York is not covered, and neither are flights within the US or to the Caribbean, unless they were part of one ticket that started in Europe.

Transatlantic delay

The flight from Europe reaches Boston, New York or the final destination on your ticket at least three hours late.

3 hours at arrival

Cancellation

JetBlue cancelled your departure from Europe and told you less than 14 days in advance.

Under 14 days

Denied boarding

You had a confirmed seat and checked in on time, but were bumped because the flight was oversold.

Due immediately

Outside EU rules

Flights leaving the US or the Caribbean, plus disruption from extraordinary events such as a snowstorm shutting the airport.

Non-EU departure or extraordinary event

Several JetBlue legs on one itinerary? Enter your departure, final destination and date and we will tell you in two minutes whether it counts. Check your JetBlue flight.

What JetBlue pays: covered and uncovered routes

Every transatlantic crossing is longer than 3,500 km, so leaving Europe on JetBlue almost always puts you in the top band. Whether you booked Blue Basic or Mint makes no difference.

JetBlue route EU261 Amount
Paris–New York Covered, departs from the EU (about 5,800 km) €600
Amsterdam, Dublin or Madrid–Boston Covered, departs from the EU (over 3,500 km) €600
London or Edinburgh–US UK261, paid in pounds UK261
Fort Lauderdale–San Juan, Orlando–Santo Domingo Not covered: departs from the US —
New York–Paris (return) Not covered: departs from the US —

The sum is paid per passenger, including children with their own seat: two parents and two kids on a Paris–New York flight cancelled a few days before could claim €2,400.

Delayed JetBlue flight: what to do

More than 6 in 10 JetBlue claims we receive involve a delay. Many concern domestic or Caribbean flights that EU261 does not reach, which is why we always check where your trip began. If you are flying out of Europe:

  1. Download your boarding pass in the JetBlue app and keep it for any connecting flights too.
  2. Screenshot the notifications showing the new time and the reason given.
  3. Record when the doors open in Boston, New York or your final destination.
  4. Hold on to receipts for food and hotels if no care is offered.
  5. Do not accept TrueBlue points or travel credit as a final settlement before you know what you are owed in euros.

Care while you wait in Europe

Before a transatlantic departure from Europe, JetBlue must provide meals and drinks once you have waited 4 hours and, if the flight moves to the next day, a hotel plus transfers.

Flight distance Care after
Up to 1,500 km 2 hours
1,500 to 3,500 km 3 hours
Over 3,500 km (all Europe–US flights) 4 hours
Delay of 5 hours or more You can give up the trip and get your fare back

Missed connection at JFK or Boston

On a single ticket such as Paris–New York–Orlando, missing the connection and reaching Orlando three or more hours late is judged on the final destination. With a domestic flight booked separately, only the transatlantic leg is covered. More on our page about JetBlue delay compensation.

Cancelled JetBlue flight: what you can get

Close to 3 in 10 JetBlue claims involve a cancellation. On departures from Europe you have two separate rights.

Refund or alternative flight

Take the ticket price back, or pick another flight to the US, straight away or on a later date.

€600 compensation

Added on top if you were told about the cancellation less than 14 days before departure.

Notice Compensation
14 days or more No, only refund or rebooking
7–13 days Yes, unless the alternative leaves no more than 2 hours earlier and lands within 4 hours of the original time
Under 7 days Yes, unless the alternative leaves no more than 1 hour earlier and lands within 2 hours of the original time

Route changes. JetBlue has reshaped its European schedule several times, turning some year-round routes into seasonal ones. If your flight was dropped or retimed by several hours close to departure, it may count as a cancellation. Read more about JetBlue cancellation compensation.

JetBlue overbooking

About 7 in 100 JetBlue claims concern denied boarding. On departures from Europe, compensation is due immediately if you had a confirmed seat and arrived on time; it is not owed if you were refused because your ESTA or visa was not valid for the US. Everything you need is in our guide to JetBlue overbooking and denied boarding.

Strikes and US weather

If a delay stems from a strike by JetBlue pilots or cabin crew, the airline normally has to pay: the EU Court of Justice sees a strike by the carrier's own staff as a business risk (case C-28/20). A European air traffic control strike, a nor'easter on the East Coast or a hurricane in Florida can be extraordinary, provided they genuinely affected your flight.

JetBlue turned you down? Typical excuses

It depends
"Weather in New York or Boston"

A storm that closes runways is extraordinary. But if your flight was cancelled while others left as normal, the reason needs checking.

Usually owed
"Aircraft issue"

Faults found during routine maintenance are the airline's responsibility.

EU Court of Justice, case C-549/07
Often not owed
"Air traffic control restrictions"

Ground stops imposed by air traffic authorities are extraordinary, but they must have caused that particular delay.

Usually owed
"Crew shortage"

Rostering pilots and cabin crew is part of running the airline.

Has JetBlue said no? A refusal does not close the case: we check the cause and, if it is unfounded, move on to a formal demand and court action. Check your JetBlue flight.

JetBlue domestic, Caribbean and codeshare flights

Most of JetBlue's network links New York, Boston, Florida, Puerto Rico and the Caribbean. Those flights leave from outside Europe on a US carrier, so the European rules do not apply, and US law sets no fixed compensation for delays. JetBlue has its own Customer Bill of Rights, which can provide travel credits: that is the airline's commercial policy, not an EU right.

  • covered: JetBlue departures from Paris, Amsterdam, Dublin, Madrid, Barcelona, Milan and other EU airports
  • covered under UK261: departures from London and Edinburgh
  • not covered: returns from the US, and domestic or Caribbean flights booked separately

If a flight sold under a JetBlue flight number was operated by a European partner airline, the operating carrier is what counts, so you are covered on the way back to Europe as well.

Claiming from JetBlue: on your own or with us

You can contact JetBlue through the help section of its website, quoting your booking code and flight number.

On your own

It is free, but you will be asserting a European rule against an American airline. If it refuses, you can go to the national enforcement body of the country your flight left from (the CAA for UK departures), or to court.

With DelayFlight24

Online form and signature in minutes. We handle the claim, the formal demand and any court case with our own lawyers. You pay only on success: 25% + VAT. Legal costs are ours, even if the case is lost.

If JetBlue has already refused

Send us the reply: we compare the stated reason with the flight data and, if the refusal does not hold up, we send the formal demand ourselves.

What you need

  • Booking confirmationListing every flight on the itinerary.
  • PassportFor each passenger, including children.
  • JetBlue emails and alertsAbout the delay or cancellation, with any receipts.

Deadlines

The Regulation has no time limit of its own: the law of the country where you claim applies (EU Court of Justice, case C-139/11). A US trip from a few years ago may still be recoverable: enter the date and we will check.

How long JetBlue takes to pay

If JetBlue accepts, payment usually arrives within a few weeks; if a formal demand or court case is needed, expect a few months. Once we are paid, we transfer your share: from €600 you receive €417.

Lost or damaged JetBlue luggage

Baggage falls under the Montreal Convention, transatlantic flights included. File a PIR at the baggage desk on arrival and send your claim to JetBlue within 7 days for damage, or within 21 days of getting the bag back for a delay.

JetBlue Airways compensation: frequently asked questions

How much does JetBlue pay for a delayed flight from Europe to the US?
All transatlantic flights are over 3,500 km: if the flight departed from an EU airport and you arrived at least 3 hours late, €600 per passenger is due.
Is my JetBlue return flight from New York covered?
No. JetBlue is a US airline and Regulation (EC) 261/2004 only applies to its departures from Europe. The return from the US does not give rise to EU compensation.
My JetBlue flight within the US or to the Caribbean was delayed. Can I claim?
Usually not: a flight leaving the US or the Caribbean on an American airline is outside the EU rules, and US law sets no fixed compensation for delays. The exception is when that flight was part of a single ticket that started in Europe.
I flew JetBlue from London Heathrow or Gatwick. Am I covered?
Yes, under UK261, the British version of the rules, with compensation in pounds. Enter your flight details and we will tell you how to proceed.
I missed my connection at JFK to Orlando. Can I claim?
Yes, if the whole trip was one booking starting in Europe and you reached Orlando three or more hours late. The final destination counts. With separate tickets, only the transatlantic flight is covered.
JetBlue offered me TrueBlue points or travel credit. Should I accept?
You do not have to. Compensation under the Regulation must be paid in money unless you agree otherwise in writing. Check what you are owed in euros before accepting points or credit.
Does a snowstorm in New York cancel my right to compensation?
If it genuinely closed the airport at the time of your flight, usually yes. But JetBlue has to prove it, and if other flights left normally the reason needs checking.
How long do I have to claim against JetBlue?
The Regulation sets no deadline: the law of the country where you claim applies. Flights from a few years ago are often still claimable. Enter the date and we will check.
What does DelayFlight24 charge for a JetBlue claim?
Nothing upfront. If we recover compensation we keep 25% + VAT: from €600 you receive €417, from €400 you receive €278 and from €250 you receive €173.75. Legal costs are ours, even if the case is lost.
