Aeroflot compensation: which flights the EU rules still cover
Aeroflot, Russia's flag carrier, is based in Moscow and runs its network through Sheremetyevo airport. It stopped flying to Europe at the end of February 2022, after the European Union closed its airspace to Russian aircraft, and the UK did the same. If your Aeroflot flight from London, Paris, Rome or another European city went wrong before then, you may still have a claim, and this page sets out where the line falls.
Aeroflot is a non-EU airline. Under Regulation (EC) 261/2004 it only owed compensation on flights departing from the EU, Iceland, Norway or Switzerland. Flights arriving in Europe from Moscow, or from any other non-EU country, are not covered. UK departures fall under the British version of the same rules.
Long delay

Under 14 daysBumped

How much Aeroflot owed per passenger
The figure is fixed by distance to your final destination, whatever you paid. Many travellers flew Aeroflot to Asia via Sheremetyevo; on a single booking the end city decides the band.
| Distance | Aeroflot examples from Europe | Amount |
|---|---|---|
| Up to 1,500 km | Riga–Moscow, Helsinki–Moscow, Warsaw–Moscow | €250 |
| 1,500 to 3,500 km | Rome–Moscow, Milan–Moscow, Paris–Moscow | €400 |
| Over 3,500 km | Rome–Moscow–Tokyo or Paris–Moscow–Beijing on one ticket | €600 |
The right belongs to every passenger, including children with their own seat. A couple and their teenager on a Paris–Moscow flight landing four hours late would be looking at €1,200 between them.
Delayed Aeroflot flight: what you need to show
What counts is when the aircraft doors opened at your destination. For a flight from a few years ago, the evidence you kept matters most:
- Your Aeroflot e-ticket with the six-character booking reference.
- Boarding passes for every leg, including the onward one from Sheremetyevo.
- Emails or texts in which Aeroflot announced the delay or a new departure time.
- Receipts for food, taxis or a hotel during the wait.
- Any written reply Aeroflot sent to an earlier complaint.
Care Aeroflot had to provide
On departures from Europe, Aeroflot had to offer meals and drinks and, for an overnight wait, a hotel with transport:
| Flight | Care from |
|---|---|
| Up to 1,500 km | 2 hours |
| 1,500 to 3,500 km | 3 hours |
| Over 3,500 km | 4 hours |
| 5 hours or more | Ticket refund if you chose not to travel |
Missed connection in Moscow
A late departure from London and a missed onward flight to Bangkok at Sheremetyevo is a typical Aeroflot case. On one ticket starting in Europe, the delay at the final destination is what counts. More on our page about the delayed Aeroflot flight.
Cancelled Aeroflot flight: refund and compensation
Due for any cancelled flight departing Europe, including those scrapped at the end of February 2022.
Due on top if the cancellation came late and was not caused by events beyond the airline's control.
| Notice given | Compensation |
|---|---|
| 14 days or more | No, only a refund or rerouting |
| 7 to 13 days | Yes, if the replacement left more than 2 hours early or landed 4 hours or more late |
| Under 7 days | Yes, if the replacement left more than 1 hour early or landed 2 hours or more late |
February 2022. Cancellations forced by the closure of European airspace stem from a government decision, so compensation is usually not owed, but the fare for the unflown flight is. See our page on the cancelled Aeroflot flight.
Aeroflot overbooking at European airports
If Aeroflot left you behind at a European airport because the flight was full, compensation was due straight away, plus a new flight or a refund. It does not apply if boarding was refused over a Russian visa or passport problem. Read our guide to Aeroflot overbooking.
Strikes, sanctions and Aeroflot claims
The Court of Justice of the EU has held that a strike by an airline's own pilots or cabin crew is not an extraordinary circumstance (case C-28/20). Air traffic control walkouts and overflight bans imposed by governments are a different matter: they are outside the airline's control.
Aeroflot turned your claim down? Common reasons
Faults found in routine maintenance are part of running an airline.
CJEU, case C-549/07That is correct: in that direction EU rules do not bind a Russian carrier.
An event outside Aeroflot's control, though the refund of the unused fare still applies.
Aeroflot today: Pobeda, Rossiya and non-EU routes
The group also includes the low-cost carrier Pobeda and Rossiya Airlines. Aeroflot's SkyTeam membership was suspended in April 2022. It now flies to countries such as Turkey, the UAE, Egypt, Thailand and Armenia; a trip from one of those countries to Russia is outside the EU rules.
How to claim from Aeroflot
Write to Aeroflot customer service; if that fails, go to the national enforcement body of the country where the flight departed (the CAA for UK departures) or to court, at your own cost and time.
We check free of charge whether your flight was covered and still within time. You pay only if money comes in: 25% + VAT.
If Aeroflot has already refused
A refusal is not the end; we review the stated reason against your route and date.
Documents to gather
- Ticket or receiptAn old confirmation email will do.
- Photo IDFor each passenger.
- Aeroflot correspondenceNotices, replies and any vouchers issued.
Time limits
The deadline is set by the law of the country where the claim is brought (CJEU, case C-139/11). For pre-2022 flights it may have passed in some countries but not in others: enter the date and we'll check.
How long payment takes
With an airline that no longer operates in Europe, timing is hard to predict: a few weeks if Aeroflot accepts, several months if formal action is needed. We still take the case and tell you plainly what the prospects are.
Lost luggage on Aeroflot
Lost or damaged bags fall under the Montreal Convention: fill in a PIR at the airport, then claim in writing within 7 days for damage and within 21 days of delivery for a delayed bag.
