Air Caraïbes compensation: delays and cancellations between Paris and the French Caribbean
Air Caraïbes is the French airline of the Antilles. It was formed in 2000 from four regional carriers, is based in Les Abymes, Guadeloupe, and belongs to Groupe Dubreuil. Its Airbus A350s link Paris-Orly with Pointe-à-Pitre, Fort-de-France and Cayenne, while ATR 72-600 turboprops hop between the islands. If your flight arrived three hours late, was cancelled at short notice or left without you because it was overbooked, you could claim €250 or €400 per passenger.
As an EU airline, Air Caraïbes is bound by Regulation (EC) 261/2004 in both directions: on flights out of Paris and on flights back from the Caribbean, including from islands outside the EU.

How much Air Caraïbes pays: why Paris–Guadeloupe is €400, not €600
Guadeloupe, Martinique and French Guiana are part of the EU. A Paris–Pointe-à-Pitre flight therefore counts as an intra-EU flight, and although it is over 6,000 km long the Regulation sets compensation at €400. Plenty of passengers expect €600 and claim the wrong amount.
| Air Caraïbes flight | Distance | Compensation |
|---|---|---|
| Pointe-à-Pitre–Fort-de-France | About 200 km | €250 |
| Paris-Orly–Pointe-à-Pitre | About 6,750 km, within the EU | €400 |
| Paris-Orly–Fort-de-France | About 6,850 km, within the EU | €400 |
| Paris-Orly–Cayenne | About 7,100 km, within the EU | €400 |
€600 only applies to routes over 3,500 km that leave the EU. Each passenger claims separately, children with their own seat included: a family of four on an Orly–Fort-de-France flight five hours late could receive €1,600.
Air Caraïbes flight delayed: what to do
On the transatlantic rotation, one technical problem with an A350 in Orly can push back the return flight from the Antilles the same day.
- Keep your boarding pass for the TX flight, on paper or on your phone.
- Save emails and texts from Air Caraïbes stating the reason given.
- Write down when the doors opened on arrival.
- Ask for meal vouchers at the desk and keep taxi and hotel receipts.
- Do not accept an "avoir" (flight credit) in place of cash before checking your rights.
Care at the airport
| Route type | Meals and drinks after |
|---|---|
| Inter-island flights up to 1,500 km | 2 hours |
| Paris to the Antilles or French Guiana (intra-EU) | 3 hours |
| Non-EU flights over 3,500 km | 4 hours |
| 5 hours or more | Refund if you choose not to travel |
Missed connection
If you were on one ticket, say Paris to Pointe-à-Pitre and then an ATR to another island, what counts is the delay at your final destination. Read more about Air Caraïbes delay compensation.
Air Caraïbes flight cancelled: refund and compensation

Added on top when you are told less than 14 days before departure.
| Notice | Compensation |
|---|---|
| 14 days or more | Not due |
| 7-13 days | Due, unless the new flight leaves no more than 2 hours earlier and lands less than 4 hours late |
| Under 7 days | Due, unless the new flight leaves no more than 1 hour earlier and lands less than 2 hours late |
Schedule changes. A major retiming announced a few days before departure can count as a cancellation. See our page on Air Caraïbes cancellation compensation.
Air Caraïbes overbooking
At Christmas, Easter and in the summer holidays, flights to the Antilles are often full. If you are refused boarding because too many seats were sold, compensation is due on the spot, plus a refund or another flight. It does not apply if you reached the gate after it closed or without valid documents. Our guide covers Air Caraïbes overbooking in detail.
Air Caraïbes strike: whose strike matters
French air traffic control strikes regularly hit Orly, but they are extraordinary circumstances: no compensation, though care and refunds still apply. If Air Caraïbes' own pilots or cabin crew walk out, compensation is normally due (case C-28/20).
Air Caraïbes rejected your claim? Typical answers
Breakdowns are part of an airline's normal operations.
EU Court of Justice, case C-549/07A serious reason between June and November, but only if the warning really affected that airport on that day.
Aircraft rotation is an internal matter, unless an extraordinary event is proven.
Rules out compensation if it truly hit your flight.
Air Caraïbes, French bee and Caribbean routes
French bee, the low-cost sister airline in the same group, is a separate carrier: check your booking to see who operated your flight. Air Caraïbes also flies to the Dominican Republic and other non-EU islands. As a European airline, it owes compensation on flights from there back to Pointe-à-Pitre or Fort-de-France too.
