Rights and amounts6
When am I entitled to compensation?
When you arrive 3 hours or more late, when your flight is cancelled with less than 14 days' notice or when you are denied boarding because of overbooking, on a flight covered by EU Regulation 261/2004 and unless there are extraordinary circumstances.
How much can I get?
€250 for flights up to 1,500 km, €400 up to 3,500 km and €600 beyond. On flights within the EU over 3,500 km it is €400. The amount is per passenger and does not depend on the ticket price.
Which flights does the Regulation cover?
All flights departing from an EU airport, with any airline, and flights arriving in the EU operated by a European airline. Iceland, Norway, Liechtenstein and Switzerland count too.
What is the difference between a refund and compensation?
A refund gives you back the ticket price when you give up the flight. Compensation is the fixed €250, €400 or €600 for the disruption. If your flight is cancelled you may be entitled to both.
What are extraordinary circumstances?
Events the airline could not avoid, such as severe weather, an air traffic control strike or an airspace closure. A technical fault or a strike by the airline's own staff does not count.
Does the airline have to look after me at the airport?
Yes: meals and drinks after 2, 3 or 4 hours of waiting depending on distance, two free communications and a hotel if you have to stay the night. Care is owed even in extraordinary circumstances.
Delayed flight4
How long does the delay have to be for compensation?
3 hours or more on arrival at your final destination. What counts is when the aircraft doors open, not when it lands.
I missed my connection: am I owed anything?
Yes, if your flights were on the same booking and you reach your destination 3 hours or more late. With separate tickets only the delayed flight counts.
My flight arrived 2 hours and 50 minutes late: can I claim?
Not compensation, which starts at 3 hours. You are still owed care at the airport and a refund of reasonable expenses.
When can I give up the flight?
If the delay passes 5 hours you can give up the flight and get your ticket refunded, plus a flight back to where you started if you were already travelling.
Cancelled flight4
My flight was cancelled: what am I owed?
Always the choice between a refund within 7 days and a replacement flight, plus care. Compensation comes on top if you were told less than 14 days before.
The airline is offering me a voucher: do I have to accept it?
No. Refunds and compensation are owed in money. A voucher only counts if you choose to accept it.
I accepted the replacement flight: do I lose compensation?
No. Compensation depends on the notice and the times of the replacement flight, not on whether you chose a refund or rebooking.
My flight was moved earlier: is that a cancellation?
If it was moved significantly earlier, yes, and the same rules apply: with less than 14 days' notice you may be entitled to compensation.
Overbooking and denied boarding3
What is overbooking?
The airline sells more tickets than there are seats. If everyone turns up, some passengers are left behind and are entitled to compensation straight away.
I volunteered: can I claim compensation?
No. You get the benefits agreed with the airline and a refund or replacement flight, but not the compensation set by the Regulation.
I was moved to a lower class: what am I owed?
A refund of 30%, 50% or 75% of the fare for that flight, depending on distance.
How DelayFlight24 works6
What does DelayFlight24 do?
We check for free whether your flight gives you the right to compensation and, if you hand us the claim, we handle it from start to finish: the claim to the airline, reminders, formal notice and, if needed, legal action.
How do I open a claim?
Enter your route, date and airline in the form, fill in the passenger details, sign the mandate online and upload your documents. It takes a few minutes.
Can I do it myself?
Yes, you can write to the airline directly. Handing us the claim saves you reminders, refusals to challenge and court cases: we deal with it all with no upfront cost.
How long does it take?
If the airline accepts, usually a few weeks. If a formal notice or court case is needed it can take a few months. We keep you updated at every step.
How do I follow my claim?
In your account you can see where it stands: under review, sent to the airline, awaiting payment, received, paid. We also let you know by email.
What happens if the airline refuses?
We assess the refusal and, if it is unfounded, we send a formal notice and take the airline to court with our lawyers. Legal costs are on us.
Costs and payment4
How much does the service cost?
Checking your flight and opening a claim is free. Only if we get you compensated do we keep 25% + VAT: on €250 you receive €173.75, on €400 you receive €278, on €600 you receive €417.
Are there any hidden costs?
No. If we do not get you compensated you pay nothing. If legal action is needed the fee is 40% + VAT and legal costs stay with us.
How do I receive the money?
The airline pays us and we send you your share by bank transfer, after our fee.
I travelled with other people: how does it work?
Every passenger is entitled to compensation, children included. You can add your travel companions to the same claim and the fee is calculated on each person's amount.
Documents and signature4
Which documents do I need?
An identity document, your boarding pass or booking confirmation and, if you have them, the airline's messages about the delay or cancellation.
Why do I have to sign a mandate?
The mandate allows us to claim compensation from the airline on your behalf. You sign it online in a few seconds, from your phone or computer.
How does it work for children?
For minors, a parent or guardian signs the mandate: for the child we only need their identity document.
Is my data safe?
Yes. The connection is encrypted and documents are stored privately: we only use them to handle your claim.
Special cases4
Does it apply to low-cost flights too?
Yes. The Regulation applies to every airline, low-cost included, and the amount does not depend on the ticket price.
My flight was part of a package holiday: can I claim?
Yes. Compensation is paid by the airline that operated the flight, even if you booked through a tour operator.
How long do I have to claim?
The Regulation sets no deadline: it depends on the law of the country where you claim (C-139/11). You are often still in time even for flights from years ago.
The airline has gone out of business: can I still claim?
It depends on the proceedings under way. Enter your flight details and we will tell you whether a claim makes sense.
