Air Dolomiti compensation: when you can claim €250
Air Dolomiti is the Italian regional airline of the Lufthansa Group linking Florence, Verona and Bologna with Munich and Frankfurt. We have handled more than 130 Air Dolomiti claims, and the route that comes up most often is Florence–Frankfurt, in both directions. A delay, late cancellation or bumping can be worth €250 per passenger, even on a one-hour hop over the Alps.
The airline is based in Dossobuono, near Verona airport, and is wholly owned by Lufthansa, which makes it an EU carrier. Under Regulation (EC) 261/2004, every Air Dolomiti flight leaving an EU airport is covered, and so is any flight landing in the EU from outside it. Geneva, a busy departure point for our Air Dolomiti customers, is included too, because Switzerland applies the same rules.
Long delay
The doors open at your final destination three hours or more after the scheduled arrival time.
3+ hours lateCancellation
You were told less than two weeks before departure and the replacement flight falls outside the legal time limits.
Under 14 days' noticeDenied boarding
The flight was oversold and you were left behind despite a valid ticket and arriving at the gate on time.
Payable straight awayNo claim
Events Air Dolomiti could not control, such as a thunderstorm over Munich or an air traffic control strike. The airline must prove it.

How much Air Dolomiti pays, route by route
Almost the whole Air Dolomiti network is under 1,500 km, so €250 is the amount most passengers receive. The fare you paid is irrelevant: only the distance to your final destination counts.
| Distance | Air Dolomiti examples | Compensation |
|---|---|---|
| Up to 1,500 km | Florence–Frankfurt, Florence–Munich, Munich–Bologna, Luxembourg–Frankfurt | €250 |
| 1,500 to 3,500 km | With a connection on the same booking, for example Florence–Helsinki via Frankfurt | €400 |
| Over 3,500 km | With a long-haul connection, for example Florence–New York via Munich | €600 |
Each traveller claims separately. Two parents and two children on a Florence–Frankfurt flight that landed over three hours late are owed €1,000 between them, since children with their own seat receive the full adult amount.
Air Dolomiti flight delayed? What to do at the airport
Just over half of the Air Dolomiti cases we see involve a delay. On short sectors like Munich–Bologna, an aircraft held at the hub waiting for a take-off slot can quickly turn into hours. What counts is when the door opens at your destination. While you wait:
- Keep your boarding pass, including the mobile one in the Lufthansa app, as proof you were on the flight.
- Ask staff at the gate for the reason and write it down; written replies sometimes give a different one.
- Photograph the departures board in Florence, Verona or at the German hub showing the revised time.
- Hold on to receipts for meals, taxis and hotels, particularly if you get stuck overnight in Germany.
- Say no to vouchers or miles offered instead of cash compensation.
Meals and hotel while you wait
Separately from compensation, Air Dolomiti must provide food and drink during a long wait and, if departure moves to the next day, a hotel room and transport to it.
| Distance | Care from |
|---|---|
| Up to 1,500 km | 2 hours |
| 1,500 to 3,500 km | 3 hours |
| Over 3,500 km | 4 hours |
| Delay of 5 hours or more | You can cancel the trip and get your fare back |
Missed your Lufthansa connection in Munich or Frankfurt?
Many people fly Air Dolomiti only as far as the German hub before continuing with Lufthansa. If a late first leg made you miss the onward flight and, on a single booking, you reached your final destination three hours or more behind schedule, compensation is based on the full distance and can reach €600. Separate tickets are assessed one by one. Read more on our Air Dolomiti delay compensation page.
Air Dolomiti flight cancelled: refund and compensation
Cancellations make up almost half of our Air Dolomiti cases. Accepting the rebooking or refund offered by message does not cancel your right to compensation.
Always owed after a cancellation: you choose between the fare back or a later flight, possibly with another Lufthansa Group airline.
Owed on top when you were told less than 14 days before departure.
| Notice given | Compensation |
|---|---|
| 14 days or more | Not owed; refund or rebooking still apply |
| 7 to 13 days | Owed, unless the new flight leaves no more than 2 hours earlier and lands less than 4 hours later |
| Under 7 days | Owed, unless the new flight leaves no more than 1 hour earlier and lands less than 2 hours later |
Retimed flights. If Air Dolomiti moves your departure by several hours shortly before you travel, the EU Court of Justice may treat it as a cancellation. Already refunded? See whether compensation is owed as well. More detail on our Air Dolomiti cancellation page.
Air Dolomiti overbooking and denied boarding
Seats on the regional Embraers are limited, so an oversold flight means someone stays on the ground. It is rare among our Air Dolomiti customers, around 2 cases in 100, but compensation is due immediately, together with rebooking or a refund. It is not owed if boarding is refused because of invalid documents or because you reached the gate after it closed. See our guide to Air Dolomiti overbooking.
Air Dolomiti strikes: who pays?
When Air Dolomiti's own pilots or cabin crew walk out, compensation is normally payable: the EU Court of Justice ruled that a strike by an airline's own staff is part of its normal business (case C-28/20). Strikes by German airport workers or air traffic controllers count as extraordinary circumstances. During Italian aviation strikes, departures between 7 and 10 am and between 6 and 9 pm are protected by law.
Air Dolomiti rejected your claim? The usual reasons
Maintenance problems are part of running an airline and do not excuse it from paying.
EU Court of Justice, case C-549/07Airline staff on strike: normally payable. Airport staff or controllers: not payable.
EU Court of Justice, case C-28/20A knock-on delay across the day's rotations is not enough unless an extraordinary event started it.

Air Dolomiti and Lufthansa: tickets, flight numbers and Miles & More
Many travellers book on lufthansa.com an LH flight marked "operated by Air Dolomiti". Under the Regulation the operating airline is responsible, so the claim goes to Air Dolomiti even though you paid Lufthansa. Miles & More miles credited for the trip do not replace compensation.
How to claim from Air Dolomiti: on your own or with us
You can write to Air Dolomiti free of charge through the Customer Service section of airdolomiti.eu, quoting your booking reference and flight number.
Free, but you chase replies yourself, sometimes passed between Air Dolomiti and Lufthansa. After a refusal, your options are the national enforcement body of the country where the flight departed or the civil courts, at your own cost.
Fill in the form and sign online. We handle the claim, the formal demand and court action with our own lawyers. You pay only if you win: 25% + VAT, so you keep €173.75 of €250. Legal costs are ours even if the case is lost.
Already refused by Air Dolomiti?
You can still pass the case to us. If the reasoning is weak, we send a formal letter before action.

Time limit for an Air Dolomiti claim
The Regulation sets no deadline of its own; national law decides, as the EU Court of Justice confirmed in case C-139/11. A flight from some time ago may still be claimable: enter the date and we will tell you.
How long Air Dolomiti takes to pay
If Air Dolomiti accepts the claim, payment usually follows within a few weeks. If a formal demand or court action is needed, expect several months. We transfer your share as soon as the money arrives.
Lost or damaged baggage on Air Dolomiti
Baggage falls under the Montreal Convention rather than Regulation 261. If your case does not appear on the belt, file a Property Irregularity Report (PIR) at the baggage desk before leaving the airport, then send a written claim within 7 days for damage or within 21 days of delivery for delayed bags.
