S7 Airlines compensation: how EU rules apply to the Siberian carrier

S7 Airlines is the brand of Siberia Airlines, a privately run Russian airline headquartered in Ob, near Novosibirsk, with hubs at Moscow Domodedovo and Novosibirsk Tolmachevo. On 25 February 2022 it halted every route to Europe after the EU shut its airspace to Russian operators, and it has not flown to the EU or the UK since. Its oneworld membership was suspended the same year. It now flies within Russia and to a handful of non-EU countries.

S7 is not an EU carrier, so Regulation (EC) 261/2004 applied to it only on departures from the EU, Switzerland, Norway or Iceland. The outbound Nice–Moscow leg was covered; the Moscow–Nice return was not.

Late arrival

Left Europe with S7 and reached the last city on the ticket at least 3 hours behind schedule.

3 hours at final arrival

Scrapped flight

Told less than two weeks ahead, with no replacement on near-identical times.

Under 14 days

Bumped

Kept off an oversold flight at a European airport despite turning up in time.

Payable at the gate

Excluded

Flights into Europe from Moscow or Novosibirsk, flights inside Russia and cancellations caused by the airspace ban.

No payout

What S7 Airlines owed per passenger

The amount depends on the kilometres to the last city on the booking; fare, cabin and baggage make no difference.

Kilometres Sample routes from Europe Sum
Up to 1,500 km Vilnius–Moscow, Tallinn–Moscow €250
1,500 to 3,500 km Nice–Moscow, Barcelona–Moscow, Rome–Moscow €400
Over 3,500 km Milan–Moscow–Novosibirsk or Rome–Moscow–Irkutsk on one booking €600

The right is personal and covers children in their own seat: three people on a Nice–Moscow flight that landed 4 hours late add up to €1,200.

S7 delay: evidence worth tracking down

Whether the 3 hours were passed depends on when the aircraft door opened at the destination. Look for these, even in an old inbox:

  1. The S7 ticket receipt with flight number and booking code.
  2. Your S7 Priority account history, if you were a member: it lists flights taken.
  3. Boarding passes for every leg, including the one out of Domodedovo.
  4. S7's notifications about the schedule change.
  5. Receipts for anything you bought while waiting.

Meals and hotel while waiting

On flights from Europe S7 had to offer refreshments and, for an overnight wait, a room and transport:

Flight length After
Up to 1,500 km 2 hours
1,500 to 3,500 km 3 hours
Over 3,500 km 4 hours
At least 5 hours late Right to abandon the trip and be repaid

Connection missed at Domodedovo

Late out of Rome and missed the onward flight to Siberia? If it was all one booking, the clock runs to arrival at the last city. More on the delayed S7 flight page.

S7 flight cancelled: fare refund and compensation

Money back for the ticket

Owed for every cancelled flight leaving a European airport, including those at the end of February 2022.

€250 to €600 on top

Only if notice came late and the cause lay with the airline.

Notice given Compensation
14 days or more ahead Not due
7 to 13 days ahead Due, unless the flight offered left within 2 hours earlier and landed within 4 hours later
Fewer than 7 days Due, unless the flight offered left within 1 hour earlier and landed within 2 hours later

Flights axed from 25 February 2022. The flying ban came from governments: compensation is generally not payable, the fare refund is. Read the cancelled S7 flight page.

S7 overbooking: left behind in Europe

If S7 had sold more seats than it had at an EU airport and you were the one left out, compensation was due at once, along with another way to travel. It does not apply if your Russian visa was missing. See the page on S7 overbooking.

Strikes and S7 flights

When the airline's own staff walk out, the EU Court of Justice treats it as a business risk and compensation stays payable (case C-28/20). An air traffic control strike, on the other hand, lets S7 off.

S7 turned you down? When the reply falls short

Usually payable
"Aircraft fault"

Technical issues tied to normal maintenance are not enough to refuse.

EU Court of Justice, case C-549/07
It depends
"Ticket issued by a oneworld partner"

What counts is who actually flew the plane: if it was S7, the claim goes to S7.

Often not payable
"It was a Moscow–Europe flight"

True: the regulation does not cover the return to the EU on a Russian carrier.

Has S7 already shut the door? Forward us its reply and we will test it against EU case law. Check the S7 flight.

S7 today: hubs, alliance and loyalty scheme

The airline, legally Siberia Airlines, absorbed its sister carrier Globus in 2019. Its loyalty programme is S7 Priority. Its oneworld membership has been suspended since 2022: if you held a ticket from an alliance partner on a flight operated by S7, the claim still goes to S7.

Claiming from S7: two routes

Yourself

Contact S7 via its website; if that fails, go to the national enforcement body of the country where the flight departed (the CAA for UK departures) or to court, paying your own way.

With DelayFlight24

Free review of the flight and the deadline. You pay only on success, 25% + VAT, and legal costs stay with us.

After a first refusal

A no from S7 does not settle the matter: we test the reasoning and, if it is weak, send a formal letter before action.

What to have ready

  • S7 ticket or receiptEven a PDF saved back in 2021.
  • ID card or passportOne per traveller.
  • Exchanges with S7Emails, texts and receipts.

How long you have

The national law of the place where you enforce the right decides (case C-139/11). As S7 has been absent from Europe for years, some claims will be out of time and others not: enter your flight date.

When S7 money arrives

A positive answer usually means payment within a few weeks; a formal demand and legal action take several months. With a Russian airline outside the European market timing stays uncertain, and we say so upfront.

S7 baggage lost or damaged

This falls under the Montreal Convention: report it on a PIR at the baggage desk, then complain in writing within 7 days for damage and within 21 days of getting the bag back for delay.

S7 Airlines compensation: frequently asked questions

Does S7 Airlines still fly from the UK or the EU?
No. On 25 February 2022 S7 suspended its European flights after EU airspace closed to Russian airlines, and the ban appears to remain in force. It now operates within Russia and to some non-EU countries.
Are S7 and Siberia Airlines the same company?
Yes. S7 Airlines is the trading name of Siberia Airlines, based in Ob near Novosibirsk, with hubs at Moscow Domodedovo and Novosibirsk.
Does EU261 cover S7 flights?
Only those that departed from an airport in the EU, Switzerland, Norway or Iceland. Flights from Moscow or Novosibirsk to Europe are not covered, because S7 is a Russian airline.
What was a delayed Rome–Moscow S7 flight worth?
€400 per passenger, as the distance is between 1,500 and 3,500 km, provided you arrived at least 3 hours late for a reason that was not extraordinary.
I booked Milan–Moscow–Novosibirsk as one trip. How much can I claim?
The final destination counts, over 3,500 km away: €600 per person if you reached Novosibirsk 3 or more hours late.
My S7 flight was cancelled in late February 2022. What can I ask for?
A refund of the fare. Fixed compensation usually not, because the airspace closure was decided by the authorities.
My ticket was from another oneworld airline but S7 operated the flight. Who pays?
S7, because the regulation places the obligation on the airline that operated the flight, not the one that sold the ticket.
What do you charge for an S7 claim?
The check costs nothing. If we recover the money we keep 25% + VAT: you keep €173.75 of €250, €278 of €400 and €417 of €600. No result, no fee.
