  • Cancellation: you are owed compensation if you were told less than 14 days before departure, on top of a ticket refund or an alternative flight.
  • Not owed for extraordinary circumstances (severe weather, air traffic control strikes). Technical faults and strikes by the airline's own staff usually are not extraordinary.
  • With DelayFlight24 you pay nothing upfront: if Transavia pays, you keep €173.75 out of €250 or €278 out of €400.

Transavia compensation: up to €400 for a delayed or cancelled flight

Transavia, the low-cost arm of Air France-KLM, stands out in our files for one reason: most complaints are about cancellations rather than delays. Out of more than 260 Transavia claims we have handled, over half started with a cancelled flight, and nearly all involved Paris Orly, mainly on routes to and from Porto, Lisbon and Madrid. If your flight was scrapped at short notice, landed 3 hours late or left without you, you may be owed €250 or €400 per passenger, whatever the fare.

The brand covers two airlines, both based in the EU: Transavia Airlines in the Netherlands (flight numbers starting HV, main base Amsterdam Schiphol) and Transavia France (flight numbers starting TO, headquartered at Paris Orly). Regulation (EC) 261/2004 therefore applies to every Transavia flight leaving the EU and also to flights coming back into Europe from Morocco, Tunisia, Egypt or Turkey.

Late arrival

The aircraft doors opened at your destination 3 hours or more after the scheduled time.

3+ hours on arrival

Cancellation

Our most common Transavia case: the flight was axed and you were told less than two weeks before departure.

Under 14 days' notice

Denied boarding

You checked in on time with a confirmed booking but were refused a seat on a full plane.

Payable straight away

No compensation

When Transavia proves an event outside its control, such as a storm or a French air traffic control strike closing Orly.

How much Transavia pays per passenger

Transavia flies short and medium-haul, so most of its passengers fall into the €250 band. Holiday routes to the Canaries or North Africa cover more than 1,500 km and reach €400.

Flight distance Transavia routes from our claims Compensation
Up to 1,500 km Porto–Paris, Lisbon–Paris, Madrid–Paris, Paris–Porto €250
1,500 to 3,500 km Paris–Marrakech, Amsterdam–Tenerife €400
Over 3,500 km Not typical of the Transavia network €600

The amount is per person, so a couple travelling with two children who each had a seat on a cancelled Lisbon–Paris flight can claim €1,000 together. In our form you enter the flight once and add your travel companions.

Delayed Transavia flight: what to do at the airport

About a third of our Transavia cases are delays. The clock stops when the first door opens at your destination, not when the wheels touch down. Before you head home:

  1. Keep your boarding pass from the Transavia app or the check-in email.
  2. Screenshot every delay alert from the app or text messages: the reason given there often changes later.
  3. Write down the actual arrival time and take a photo of the arrivals board.
  4. Hold on to receipts for food, taxis or a hotel if no vouchers were handed out.
  5. Don't sign anything that swaps your rights for a Transavia voucher before you know what you're owed.

Meals and hotel while you wait

Care at the airport is a separate duty and applies even when compensation doesn't. If you're stuck overnight, Transavia must provide a hotel and transport to it.

Flight length Care after
Up to 1,500 km 2 hours
1,500-3,500 km 3 hours
Over 3,500 km 4 hours
Delay over 5 hours You can cancel the trip and get your fare back

Missed a connection?

If both legs were on the same booking and you reached your final stop 3 or more hours late, compensation is worked out on the whole journey. Two separately bought tickets count as two independent flights. Find out more about Transavia delay compensation.

Cancelled Transavia flight: refund, rebooking and compensation

With 53% of our Transavia claims involving a cancellation, this is the part most readers need. Taking the refund or new date offered by email does not cancel your right to compensation.

Refund or alternative flight

Always due after a cancellation. You choose between your money back and travelling at another time.

€250 or €400 compensation

Paid on top when you were warned less than 14 days before departure.

Notice given Compensation due?
14 days or more No, but you keep the refund or rebooking
7 to 13 days Yes, unless the new flight leaves no more than 2 hours early and lands less than 4 hours late
Under 7 days Yes, unless the new flight leaves no more than 1 hour early and lands less than 2 hours late

Schedule change. A large shift in departure time close to the flight date can count as a cancellation under EU case law. Already refunded? See whether compensation is owed too, and read our page on cancelled Transavia flights.

Transavia overbooking and denied boarding

Overbooking is more common with Transavia than with many airlines we deal with: 14 in every 100 of our claims. If you are kept off a full flight against your will despite a confirmed booking and arriving on time, compensation is due immediately, along with a new flight or a refund.

It does not apply when the refusal is down to you, for example an expired passport or reaching the gate after it closed. Unsure? Run a free check or read about Transavia overbooking.

Transavia strikes: who is responsible?

Many Transavia flights touch France, where walkouts are frequent, so it helps to know who stopped work. If Transavia pilots or cabin crew strike, the cause lies within the airline and compensation is normally owed, as the EU Court of Justice ruled in case C-28/20. A strike by French air traffic controllers or Orly airport staff is an extraordinary circumstance: no compensation, but meals, accommodation and a refund remain due.

Transavia rejected your claim? Common reasons explained

Transavia's standard reply often blames events beyond its control. Here is how those reasons hold up.

Usually payable
"Unexpected technical fault"

Fixing aircraft is part of an airline's everyday business. Hidden manufacturing defects flagged by the manufacturer are the exception.

EU Court of Justice, case C-549/07
It depends
"Industrial action"

Transavia's own staff striking usually means you are owed money; air traffic controllers or airport workers do not.

EU Court of Justice, case C-28/20
Usually payable
"Operational reasons" or "network changes"

Cutting flights to fill planes or reshape the timetable is a commercial decision, not an outside event.

Often not payable
"Bad weather" or "air traffic restrictions"

Valid only if they actually hit your flight at that time. We check airport data before giving you an answer.

Has Transavia already said no? That is not the end of it. We test whether the reason stands up and, if it doesn't, follow with a formal demand and court action if needed. Have your Transavia flight checked.

Transavia Netherlands or Transavia France: does it matter?

Your booking shows HV for the Dutch company and TO for Transavia France. Your rights are identical because both are EU airlines; only the company that receives the claim changes. With us you just select Transavia and we send it to the right one.

Because Transavia is a European carrier, it also owes compensation on return flights from Morocco, Tunisia, Egypt or Turkey: a Marrakech–Paris flight arriving 4 hours late is worth €400, just like the outbound journey.

How to claim from Transavia

You can contact Transavia yourself through the customer service form on its website, quoting your booking number and flight details. Here is how the two routes compare.

On your own

Free, but you deal with replies, reminders and refusals. If Transavia won't pay, you can turn to the national enforcement body of the country where the flight departed, or to the courts.

With DelayFlight24

Two minutes to fill in the form and an online signature. We handle the claim, formal demand and court case with our own lawyers. You pay only if you get compensation: 25% + VAT, and we cover legal costs even if the case is lost.

If Transavia has already turned you down

Forward us the reply. If the reasoning is weak, we restart with a formal letter of demand.

What we need from you

  • Booking confirmationThe Transavia email or the boarding pass in the app.
  • ID documentFor every passenger, children included.
  • Delay or cancellation noticesEmails, texts and receipts for expenses.

Is there a deadline?

The Regulation sets no time limit; the EU Court of Justice confirmed that national law decides it (case C-139/11), so deadlines differ from country to country. A flight from a few seasons ago may well still qualify: enter the date and we'll tell you.

How long Transavia takes to pay

If Transavia accepts the claim, payment usually follows within a few weeks. If a formal demand or legal action is needed, expect a few months. As soon as the money reaches us, we transfer your share.

Lost or damaged Transavia luggage

Baggage problems fall under the Montreal Convention, not the delay rules. Fill in a Property Irregularity Report (PIR) before leaving the baggage hall, then write to Transavia within 7 days for damage and within 21 days of delivery for delayed bags.

Transavia compensation: frequently asked questions

How much compensation does Transavia pay for a cancelled flight?
If you were told about the cancellation less than 14 days before departure, Transavia owes €250 per passenger on routes up to 1,500 km, such as Porto–Paris or Madrid–Paris, and €400 on longer routes such as Paris–Marrakech. This comes on top of a refund or replacement flight.
Transavia refunded my ticket. Can I still claim compensation?
Yes. A refund gives back what you paid; compensation is a fixed sum for the disruption. Accepting a refund or a new date from Transavia does not remove your right to compensation if the notice was shorter than 14 days.
My flight was with Transavia France, not the Dutch Transavia. Are my rights the same?
Yes. Transavia Airlines (HV) and Transavia France (TO) are both EU airlines, so Regulation (EC) 261/2004 covers you either way. On our form you simply choose Transavia and we send the claim to whichever company operated your flight.
Does a French air traffic control strike entitle me to Transavia compensation?
No. Strikes by air traffic controllers count as extraordinary circumstances, although you keep the right to meals, a hotel if needed and a refund or rebooking. A strike by Transavia's own pilots or cabin crew normally does lead to compensation, following EU Court of Justice case C-28/20.
Are Transavia flights from Morocco to Europe covered?
Yes. As a European carrier, Transavia must also pay on flights into the EU from Morocco, Tunisia, Egypt or Turkey. A Marrakech–Paris flight that lands more than 3 hours late is worth €400 per passenger.
Transavia bumped me off an overbooked flight. What am I owed?
If you had a confirmed booking and reached the gate in time, compensation based on the flight distance is due straight away, plus a new flight or a refund. It does not apply if you were refused boarding because of invalid travel documents or late arrival at the gate.
How long do I have to claim from Transavia?
Regulation 261/2004 sets no time limit. The deadline depends on the law of the country where you bring the claim, as the EU Court of Justice confirmed in case C-139/11. Flights from several years ago can often still be claimed: enter the date and we will check.
What does DelayFlight24 charge for a Transavia claim?
Nothing upfront. If we recover your compensation, we keep 25% + VAT: you receive €173.75 out of €250 and €278 out of €400. We cover all legal costs, even if a court case is lost, and if we recover nothing you pay nothing.
How quickly does Transavia pay compensation?
When Transavia accepts the claim, payment usually arrives within a few weeks. If it refuses and we need a formal demand or court action, it can take a few months. We keep you updated and transfer your share as soon as we are paid.
