Azul compensation: €600 on flights from Europe to Brazil
Azul Linhas Aéreas Brasileiras is a Brazilian airline headquartered in Barueri, near São Paulo, with its main hub at Campinas-Viracopos. We hold more than 150 Azul claims covering over 200 passengers, nearly all on routes linking Europe and Campinas: Paris Orly–Campinas, Lisbon–Campinas and Paris–Rio de Janeiro via a connection. These journeys are well over 7,900 km, so a 3-hour delay or a late cancellation can be worth €600 per passenger.
The key point is that Azul is not a European airline. Regulation (EC) 261/2004 only covers Azul flights taking off from an airport in the EU, Switzerland, Norway or Iceland. A Campinas–Lisbon flight operated by Azul is outside the Regulation, even though it lands in Europe.
Delay to Brazil
Leaving Lisbon, Porto or Madrid, you reached the last stop on your ticket, including any connection at Campinas, at least 3 hours late.
3 hours at final arrivalCancellation from Europe
Azul scrapped your flight out of Europe with less than 14 days' warning.
Under two weeks' noticeDenied boarding in Europe
The flight to Brazil was full and you were left at a European gate through no fault of your own.
Payable without delayNot payable

Azul has left Paris: past flights can still be claimed
Many of our Azul claims involve the Paris Orly–Campinas route. Industry reports say Azul first made it seasonal, pausing it from October 2025, and then decided not to bring it back in 2026. In Europe the airline still serves Lisbon, Porto and Madrid. If your Paris–Campinas flight was delayed or cancelled before the route closed, your right to compensation did not disappear with it: only the national time limit of the country where you claim matters.
How much Azul pays
Every route between Europe and Brazil exceeds 3,500 km, so the amount is the highest the Regulation allows, whatever the fare or cabin.
| Distance | Azul routes departing Europe | Compensation |
|---|---|---|
| Up to 1,500 km | Azul has no flights this short from Europe | €250 |
| 1,500 to 3,500 km | Azul has no flights in this band from Europe | €400 |
| Over 3,500 km | Lisbon–Campinas, Porto–Campinas, Madrid–Campinas, Paris–Campinas (until 2025) | €600 |
The sum is per traveller: two adults and two teenagers with their own seats on a Lisbon–Campinas flight cancelled three days before departure can claim €2,400. On our form, enter the flight once and add your companions.
Delayed Azul flight from Lisbon, Porto or Madrid
Close to 6 in 10 of our Azul cases start with a delay. Many passengers continue from Campinas to other Brazilian cities: on a single ticket, the time that counts is your arrival at the final stop, say Belo Horizonte or Recife, not at Viracopos. What to do:
- Keep boarding passes for every leg, including domestic flights in Brazil.
- Screenshot messages from the Azul app and emails showing the new times.
- Record your arrival time at the final destination, which decides the claim.
- Ask for meal vouchers at the European airport and keep receipts if none are given.
- Don't accept Azul Fidelidade points or travel credit instead of €600 without checking first.
Airport care before departure
On an intercontinental flight, Azul must provide meals and drinks after a 4-hour wait and, if departure is pushed to the next day, a hotel and transfers.
| Distance | Care after |
|---|---|
| Up to 1,500 km | 2 hours |
| 1,500-3,500 km | 3 hours |
| Over 3,500 km (all Azul Europe–Brazil flights) | 4 hours |
| Over 5 hours | You can decide not to travel and get a refund |
Missed connection at Campinas
On a single Lisbon–Campinas–Recife booking, if the first flight's delay makes you miss the second and you reach Recife more than 3 hours late, compensation is due on the full distance. With separate tickets, only the flight from Europe counts. See our page on Azul delay compensation.
Cancelled Azul flight departing Europe
More than one in three of our Azul claims concerns a cancellation, and the end of the Paris route left many passengers rebooked or refunded.
Always: you can take a full refund or an alternative flight to Brazil.
On top, if you were told about the cancellation less than 14 days before the flight.
| Notice from Azul | Compensation |
|---|---|
| 14 days or more | No, but you get a refund or another flight |
| 7 to 13 days | Yes, if the flight offered leaves more than 2 hours earlier or lands 4 hours or more after the original time |
| Under 7 days | Yes, if the flight offered leaves more than 1 hour earlier or lands 2 hours or more after the original time |
Changed timetable. A big change to your departure time from Europe shortly before travel may count as a cancellation under EU case law. Check whether this applies to you and read our page on cancelled Azul flights.
Azul overbooking
In our data it is rare, around 6 in 100 Azul claims. But if you are kept off the flight to Brazil in Lisbon, Porto or Madrid despite a confirmed ticket and turning up on time, you are owed €600 immediately, plus another flight or a refund. It doesn't apply if you lacked documents required to enter Brazil or gave up your seat voluntarily. More in our guide to Azul overbooking and denied boarding.
Strikes and Azul flights
If Azul's pilots or crew walk out, the disruption is part of the airline's own business risk and compensation is normally due (EU Court of Justice, case C-28/20). A strike by air traffic controllers or by staff at the European departure airport is an extraordinary circumstance: Azul must still look after you and refund you, but not compensate you.
Azul rejected your claim? The usual justifications
Breakdowns and maintenance are part of running a fleet, long-haul included. Only hidden defects flagged by the manufacturer are an exception.
EU Court of Justice, case C-549/07Azul staff striking: usually payable. Air traffic controllers or airport workers: not payable.
EU Court of Justice, case C-28/20Dropping a route or merging flights for financial reasons is the airline's choice, not an outside event.
If Azul operated it, that's right: the Regulation does not cover departures from outside the EU on a non-European airline.
Codeshare flights: when the return from Brazil is covered
Azul also sells codeshare flights with partners such as TAP Air Portugal. What matters is who actually operates the aircraft, shown on your booking next to the flight number. If your São Paulo–Lisbon flight sold by Azul was operated by TAP, a European airline, the Regulation also applies on arrival in the EU and the claim goes to TAP. If the aircraft was Azul's, the return is not covered: Brazilian rules apply, which provide care, rebooking and refunds but not the fixed European amounts.
How to claim from Azul
You can contact Azul through the customer service channels listed on voeazul.com.br, with your booking code and flight details. Comparing the two routes:
No cost, but you're writing to a Brazilian airline and handling replies yourself. If Azul won't pay, you can go to the national enforcement body of the country where the flight departed, or to the courts.
A 2-minute form and online signature. We handle the claim, formal demand and European court action with our own lawyers. You only pay on success: 25% + VAT, leaving you €417 of €600. Legal costs stay with us even if we lose.
If Azul has already turned you down
Forward us the reply: if your flight left Europe and the reasoning is weak, we take over with a formal demand.
What you need
- Azul ticket or boarding passIncluding domestic legs in Brazil.
- PassportFor all passengers, children included.
- Airline noticesCancellation or schedule change emails, expense receipts.
Deadline for claiming
The Regulation sets no deadline: according to the EU Court of Justice, the national limit of the country where you claim applies (case C-139/11). Flights on the old Paris route may still be recoverable: enter your flight date.
When Azul compensation arrives
If Azul accepts the claim, payment typically takes a few weeks. If a formal demand or legal action is needed, allow a few months. We keep you informed and transfer your share as soon as it is received.
Lost or damaged Azul baggage
Baggage is governed by the Montreal Convention. Complete a PIR at the arrival airport and send your claim to Azul within 7 days for damage and within 21 days of delivery if your suitcase arrived late.
