Austrian Airlines compensation: when you can claim

Austrian Airlines (code OS) is Austria's national airline, part of the Lufthansa Group, and routes most of its passengers through its hub at Vienna Schwechat. We have taken on more than 170 Austrian claims, many for flights out of Vienna to Munich, Milan, Brussels, Bucharest and Sofia, and others starting in London, Amsterdam, Berlin or New York. If you reached your destination 3 hours late, had your flight cancelled at short notice or were bumped, you may be due €250, €400 or €600 per person.

Austrian is an EU airline, so Regulation (EC) 261/2004 covers every flight it operates from an EU airport and also its flights into Vienna from outside the EU, such as New York–Vienna or London–Vienna.

Delay

You arrive at your final destination, after any change of plane in Vienna, at least 3 hours late.

3+ hours on arrival

Cancellation

Austrian told you less than 14 days before departure and the alternative was well off your original timings.

Notice under 14 days

Denied boarding

The flight was full and you were left behind despite a confirmed seat and valid documents.

Owed immediately

When it is not owed

Heavy snow or fog in Vienna, air traffic control strikes or flow restrictions, provided Austrian proves they caused your delay.

Extraordinary circumstances

Not sure where you stand? Enter your airports and date for an answer in a couple of minutes. Check your Austrian flight.

How much Austrian Airlines pays: €250 to €600

Economy or Business makes no difference: the amount depends only on the distance from your departure airport to your final destination.

Distance Example Austrian routes Compensation
Up to 1,500 km Vienna–Munich, Vienna–Milan, Vienna–Brussels, Vienna–Bucharest, Vienna–Sofia, Berlin–Vienna, London–Vienna €250
1,500 to 3,500 km Vienna–Madrid, Vienna–Lisbon, Vienna–Tel Aviv €400
Over 3,500 km New York–Vienna and other long-haul flights from the hub €600

Everyone on the booking has a separate claim. A family of four flying New York–Vienna that landed 5 hours late could claim €2,400, because a child with their own seat is treated like an adult.

Austrian flight delayed? Steps to take

Delays account for 48 in every 100 Austrian claims we handle. Because the network runs through Vienna, one late feeder flight can cost you a connection and push your arrival back by many hours. While you wait:

  1. Keep both boarding passes if you were connecting, or the ones stored in the Austrian app.
  2. Save app notifications and emails, including any automatic rebooking Austrian sent you.
  3. Write down your arrival time at the final destination, not at Vienna.
  4. Collect meal vouchers at the Vienna transfer desk and keep receipts for anything you pay for.
  5. Ask for cash: compensation is owed in money, and you do not have to accept a voucher.

Meals and hotel while you wait

Austrian must provide food and drink and, if you are stranded overnight in Vienna or elsewhere, a hotel and transfers.

Distance Care after
Up to 1,500 km 2 hours
1,500 to 3,500 km 3 hours
Over 3,500 km 4 hours
Delay over 5 hours You can abandon the journey and get your fare refunded

Missed connection in Vienna

If London–Vienna–Sofia was booked as one ticket and you reached Sofia 3 or more hours late, compensation is based on the London–Sofia distance. With separate tickets, only the delayed flight counts. More on our page about Austrian Airlines delayed flight compensation.

Austrian flight cancelled: refund plus compensation

Cancellations are unusually common in our Austrian files: 44 claims in every 100. Austrian often offers a new flight straight away, and accepting it does not cancel your right to compensation.

Rebooking or refund

Always available: keep the replacement flight or ask for your ticket price back.

€250 to €600 compensation

Owed on top if you were told less than 14 days ahead and the reason was not extraordinary.

Notice Compensation
14 days or more Not owed; refund or rebooking still apply
7 to 13 days Owed, unless the new flight leaves no more than 2 hours early and arrives less than 4 hours late
Under 7 days Owed, unless the new flight leaves no more than 1 hour early and arrives less than 2 hours late

Retimed flights. If Austrian moves your flight by several hours shortly before departure, the EU Court of Justice may treat it as a cancellation. See our page on Austrian Airlines cancelled flight compensation.

Overbooking on Austrian Airlines

Denied boarding makes up 8 in every 100 of our Austrian claims. If you are kept off the plane against your will, with a valid booking and on time at the gate, compensation is owed straight away along with a new flight or a refund. It is not owed if you reached the gate after it closed or had invalid travel documents. Read the guide to Austrian Airlines overbooking and denied boarding.

Austrian Airlines strikes: the Easter 2024 walkout

In spring 2024 Austrian's flight crew went on strike during collective pay talks, and around 400 flights were cancelled just before Easter. Cases like this are exactly what the EU Court of Justice addressed in case C-28/20: a strike by an airline's own staff is not extraordinary, so compensation is normally owed. A strike by air traffic controllers or airport workers is different and releases Austrian from paying.

Austrian turned down your claim? Common reasons

These are the explanations we see most often in Austrian's replies, and how case law treats them.

Depends
"Bad weather in Vienna"

Winter snow and fog can be extraordinary, but only if they actually grounded or held your flight. We check weather records and restrictions for that time slot.

Usually owed
"Technical problem"

Technical issues are part of normal airline operations, except hidden manufacturing defects reported by the manufacturer.

EU Court of Justice, case C-549/07
Usually owed
"Staff strike"

When Austrian pilots or cabin crew strike, the airline must pay.

EU Court of Justice, case C-28/20
Often not owed
"Air traffic control restrictions"

Slots imposed by air traffic control can excuse the airline, if documented and linked to your flight.

Has Austrian already said no? We review the reason given and, if it does not hold, follow up with a formal letter before action and court proceedings if needed. Check your Austrian flight.

Codeshare flights within the Lufthansa Group

Many tickets with an OS flight number include legs operated by other Lufthansa Group or Star Alliance airlines. Compensation is claimed from the carrier that actually flew the plane, shown on your booking as "operated by". Just enter your flight number in our form and we will identify the right airline.

Flights to and from the UK

London–Vienna is covered in both directions: from Vienna because the flight leaves the EU, and from London because Austrian is an EU carrier landing in the EU. Flights departing the UK are also covered by UK rules, with amounts in pounds; we tell you which applies best.

How to claim from Austrian: yourself or with us

Austrian has an online form on its website for compensation and expense claims after a delay or cancellation. Compare the options:

Yourself

Free, but you fill in the form and deal with any objections. If refused, you can go to the national enforcement body of the country where the flight departed (the CAA for UK departures) or to court, at your own cost.

With DelayFlight24

A few minutes online and an e-signature. We handle the claim, the formal demand and any court case with our own lawyers. You pay only if you win: 25% + VAT, so you keep €173.75 of €250. Legal costs are ours, even if we lose.

Already received a refusal?

Send us Austrian's reply: if the refusal is not justified, we reopen the claim with a formal demand.

Documents

  • Booking and boarding passesFor every flight on the same ticket.
  • IDFor each passenger, children included.
  • Messages and receiptsRebooking emails, app alerts, receipts.

Time limits

Regulation 261 has no deadline of its own: the rules of the country where you bring the claim apply, as the EU Court of Justice confirmed in case C-139/11. Enter your flight date and we will check.

How long Austrian compensation takes

If Austrian accepts, payment typically arrives within a few weeks. If it refuses, a formal demand and possible court action take a few months. Once paid, we transfer your share by bank transfer.

Lost or damaged luggage with Austrian

Bags are covered by the Montreal Convention. If your case goes missing during the change in Vienna or arrives damaged, fill in a PIR at the airport and write to Austrian within 7 days for damage, or within 21 days of delivery for a delayed bag.

Austrian Airlines compensation: frequently asked questions

How much does Austrian Airlines pay for a delayed flight?
€250 per passenger up to 1,500 km, such as Vienna–Munich or London–Vienna; €400 between 1,500 and 3,500 km, such as Vienna–Madrid; €600 over 3,500 km, such as New York–Vienna. You must arrive at least 3 hours late for a reason that was not extraordinary.
I missed my connection in Vienna. Can I claim?
Yes, if both flights were on the same booking and you reached your final destination 3 or more hours late. The amount is based on the distance from your first departure airport to your final destination.
My flight was cancelled during the Austrian strike at Easter 2024. Is compensation owed?
Normally yes. Under case C-28/20 of the EU Court of Justice, a strike by an airline's own staff is not an extraordinary circumstance. Enter your flight date to check whether you are still within the time limit.
Is a New York–Vienna flight with Austrian covered?
Yes. Austrian is an EU carrier, so Regulation 261/2004 also applies to its flights arriving in the EU from outside. On routes over 3,500 km the amount is €600 per passenger.
Are flights from London to Vienna covered?
Yes. Austrian is an EU airline landing in the EU, so EU rules apply, and UK rules also cover departures from the UK. We check which gives you the better result.
Austrian rebooked me automatically. Can I still claim?
Yes, if the cancellation came less than 14 days before departure and the new flight fell outside the permitted time window. Accepting the rebooking does not remove your right to compensation.
My ticket said Austrian but another airline flew the plane. Who pays?
The airline that operated the flight, shown on your booking. Enter the flight number in our form and we will identify the right carrier.
Austrian rejected my claim. What now?
Send us the reply. If the reason does not stand up, we send a formal demand and, if needed, take Austrian to court with our own lawyers at no cost to you.
What does DelayFlight24 charge for an Austrian claim?
Nothing upfront. If you receive compensation we keep 25% + VAT, so you get €173.75 out of €250 or €278 out of €400. We cover legal costs even if the case is lost.
