Air Albania compensation: who can still claim €250
Air Albania, Albania's flag carrier, flew from its base at Tirana International Airport Nënë Tereza to London, Milan, Bergamo, Bologna, Athens and other European cities until its operations stopped in December 2025. More than 300 Air Albania passengers have already come to us: roughly half because of a late arrival, 4 in 10 because their flight was scrapped. If you boarded an Air Albania plane in the EU and landed 3 hours or more behind schedule, or your departure was called off at short notice, €250 per person may be waiting for you, separate from any ticket refund.
The airport you left from decides everything. Albania sits outside the European Union, so Regulation (EC) 261/2004 treats Air Albania as a non-EU airline. That means protection applies only to journeys that began in the EU, Iceland, Norway or Switzerland, for instance Bologna–Tirana or Athens–Tirana. A Tirana–Milan sector gives no right to compensation under the Regulation, even when you bought it as part of a return ticket.
Late arrival
Leaving from an EU airport, you touched down in Tirana, or wherever you were finally heading, with three or more hours' delay.
Measured at the gateScrapped flight
The airline cancelled with under two weeks' warning and offered nothing at comparable times.
Short noticeBumped at the gate
Staff at a European airport would not let you on, even though your ticket was valid.
No waiting periodNo claim
Anything departing Tirana, plus disruption truly outside the airline's control, like a violent storm.

Air Albania grounded: what happens to passengers' rights
Reports say Air Albania halted all flights in early December 2025, after which the Albanian Civil Aviation Authority suspended its licence with no end date. Turkish Airlines, owner of a 49% stake, had announced it was pulling out. The airline itself spoke of restructuring and rejected talk of bankruptcy.
Being grounded does not erase what the airline already owes. A delayed or cancelled flight out of the EU remains claimable within the time limits, and so do flights from the EU scrapped by the shutdown itself: there you are owed the fare back and, if warned less than 14 days ahead, possibly compensation too. Because recovering money from a grounded carrier is not straightforward, we look at Air Albania's position before taking your case on.
Air Albania payouts: €250 on almost every route
The fare you paid is irrelevant; distance alone sets the figure. Routes from Italy and Greece to Tirana are all short, so nearly every Air Albania claim is worth €250 a head.
| Distance band | Typical Air Albania sectors | Per passenger |
|---|---|---|
| Below 1,500 km | Milan Malpensa–Tirana, Bergamo–Tirana, Bologna–Tirana, Athens–Tirana | €250 |
| 1,500–3,500 km | Hardly any on this network from the EU | €400 |
| Beyond 3,500 km | Not part of Air Albania's schedule | €600 |
Parents, grandparents and children holding their own seat each count separately, so four relatives on a Bergamo–Tirana that landed 4 hours late share €1,000. Add everyone to a single form.
London departures. UK261, Britain's post-Brexit copy of the rules, protects every flight leaving the UK whatever the airline. London–Tirana falls in the 1,500–3,500 km band, worth £350 a passenger. Tirana–London is outside both schemes.
Which Air Albania flights are covered
- Milan Malpensa, Bergamo, Bologna or Athens to Tirana: EU261 applies
- London to Tirana: UK261 applies
- Tirana to Italy, Greece or the UK: no protection under either
- a single booking from the EU via Tirana: covered all the way to the last stop
Tirana–Milan Malpensa is one of the sectors customers bring us most often. Sadly, with an Albanian operator, the Regulation does not reach it.
Delayed Air Albania flight: proving what happened
Half the Air Albania files we open are delays, mostly from Malpensa, Bologna, Bergamo and London to Tirana. Since the airline no longer flies, your claim rests on evidence you kept. The clock stops when the first door opened in Tirana, not when the wheels left the runway. Dig out:
- The e-ticket or boarding card showing your name and Air Albania flight number.
- Any delay notices the airline sent by text or email before or during the trip.
- Proof of when you landed: a photo of the arrivals screen, a message to family, a taxi receipt.
- Spending during the wait: sandwiches, drinks or a hotel bought because nothing was provided.
- Anything you were asked to sign: vouchers accepted in place of cash may complicate matters, so tell us.
Meals and hotel while waiting
For flights out of the EU, the airline had to keep you fed and watered and, with an overnight delay, put you up in a hotel and get you there.
| Your sector | Care starts |
|---|---|
| Short, e.g. Bergamo–Tirana | from 2 hours |
| Medium, 1,500–3,500 km | from 3 hours |
| Long, beyond 3,500 km | from 4 hours |
| Five hours late or worse | Walking away with your fare refunded is allowed |
Onward flight missed in Tirana
Starting in the EU on one booking with a change in Tirana? If the final arrival was 3 hours or more late, the whole journey's distance sets the payout. Two separately bought tickets are judged one by one. Full details on our Air Albania delay compensation page.
Air Albania cancellations: money back plus compensation
Four in ten of our Air Albania files are cancellations, an unusually high share for any airline. Plenty of travellers pocketed the refund and stopped there, unaware a second payment might be due.
Whenever a departure from the EU is axed, you pick: the price you paid, or a different flight to Tirana.
On top of that, owed when the warning came under 14 days ahead and nothing extraordinary was to blame.
| Warning period | Is compensation owed? |
|---|---|
| Two weeks or more | No; fare refund or rebooking only |
| One to two weeks | Yes, except where the substitute departed up to 2 hours early and landed under 4 hours late |
| Under a week | Yes, except where the substitute departed up to 1 hour early and landed under 2 hours late |
Retimed flights. A big shift in departure time just days before travel can count as a cancellation according to the EU Court of Justice. Got a refund already? See if a payout is owed as well. Read our Air Albania cancelled flight guide.
Refused boarding on Air Albania
About 6 in 100 of our Air Albania claims involve passengers turned away. If that happened at an EU airport with a valid ticket and a timely arrival at the gate, compensation was owed then and there, plus a refund or another seat. Problems with passports or visas, or turning up after the gate shut, are a different matter. Let us look at your case, or read about Air Albania overbooking.
Walkouts and Air Albania
Industrial action by the carrier's own pilots or cabin crew is, in the view of the EU Court of Justice, part of ordinary business, so passengers normally keep their compensation (case C-28/20). Controllers or ground staff at Italian airports downing tools is a different story: no payout, though meals, rerouting or a refund remain due.
Air Albania said no? Weighing its explanations
Money trouble and internal reorganisation normally belong to the airline's own sphere. Cancellations tied to the December 2025 grounding are examined individually.
Fixing aircraft is routine airline work; only hidden manufacturing defects revealed by the maker or regulators are an exception. Check yours.

A rolling delay from earlier rotations is not a defence unless an extraordinary event started it.
Claiming from a grounded airline: alone or through us
Air Albania's website, airalbania.com.al, is still online with a "Contact us" page. A written request quoting booking code, flight number, date and every passenger's name, citing Regulation 261/2004, costs nothing. Whether anyone answers while flights are suspended is another question.
Free, but chasing a silent airline is up to you. Next steps are the national enforcement body where the flight departed (the CAA for UK departures) or the small claims court, at your expense.
Two minutes online, an e-signature, then we chase Air Albania, issue the formal demand and litigate with our own lawyers. Our fee is 25% + VAT, only on success. Court costs stay with us, win or lose.
Already rejected or ignored?
Send us the airline's reply, or tell us nobody wrote back. We will judge whether a formal demand is worth sending.
What to upload
- Ticket or booking emailAny Air Albania document showing the flight.
- ID for every travellerMinors as well.
- Correspondence and receiptsDelay or refund messages, plus what you spent.
Is your flight too old?
EU261 contains no time limit of its own; national law fills the gap, as the EU Court of Justice ruled in case C-139/11. A flight from a few years back may well still qualify: tell us the date.
Payment timescales with Air Albania
A cooperative airline usually pays within a few weeks. Silence or a refusal means a formal demand and perhaps a lawsuit, which can add a few months; the grounding may slow things further. When funds arrive, your share follows by bank transfer.
Baggage problems on Air Albania
Suitcases are governed by the Montreal Convention instead. A missing or damaged bag in Tirana needed a Property Irregularity Report at the airport, then a written claim within 7 days for damage or 21 days after delivery for late bags.
