FlyEgypt compensation: your rights now the airline has stopped flying
FlyEgypt was the Cairo-based budget and charter airline that flew European holidaymakers to Sharm el-Sheikh, Hurghada and Luxor. On 21 October 2024 it halted all flights because of financial difficulties, and as far as published reports show it has not restarted. We have handled more than 180 claims for FlyEgypt flights, and over 8 in 10 involve a delay, often of many hours, on holiday flights to the Red Sea. If you flew with them before the shutdown, here is what the law says and what can still be done.
One point decides almost everything: FlyEgypt is a non-EU airline. Regulation (EC) 261/2004 bound it only on flights departing from an airport in the EU, Iceland, Norway or Switzerland. Flights home from Egypt to Europe are not covered by EU261.
Outbound delay
A flight from a European airport that landed in Egypt 3 hours or more late.
European departures onlyCancellation
A flight from Europe cancelled with under 14 days' notice, including those scrapped in October 2024.
Under 14 days' noticeBumped from the flight
Boarding refused against your will on a flight leaving the EU.

FlyEgypt has ceased trading: what that means for you
After grounding its fleet, the airline said it intended to seek bankruptcy protection, and the Egyptian aviation authority reportedly wants its debts settled before any liquidation. The legal position is therefore unresolved, and any claim would be against an Egyptian company that no longer operates. Put simply, getting money out of FlyEgypt today is hard, and we cannot guarantee it. What we can do is tell you, case by case, whether a realistic route exists.
Often there is a better route: many Red Sea charter flights were sold as part of a package holiday. In that case the tour operator is responsible for services not provided and must protect you if a supplier goes bust. If you paid by card, also ask your bank whether you can dispute the charge for a flight that never took place.
How much EU261 provided for FlyEgypt flights
The figure depends only on the distance between the European departure airport and your Egyptian destination. Many routes exceed 3,500 km and fall into the top band.
| Distance | FlyEgypt routes in our files | Amount |
|---|---|---|
| Up to 1,500 km | Very few European routes to Egypt are this short | €250 |
| 1,500 to 3,500 km | Naples–Sharm el-Sheikh, Budapest–Hurghada | €400 |
| Over 3,500 km | Paris–Luxor, Lille–Hurghada, Nantes–Hurghada, Madrid–Luxor | €600 |
Every passenger has a separate claim, children with their own seat included: a family of four arriving 6 hours late on Paris–Luxor would have been owed €2,400.
Delayed FlyEgypt flight: building your claim
Delay was FlyEgypt's recurring problem. It ran a very small fleet of Boeing 737-800s, so a hitch on one flight easily spilled over onto the next. If your flight from Europe arrived 3 hours or more late before the shutdown:
- Find your boarding pass or tour operator voucher showing the FT flight number and date.
- Look for messages from your agent or tour operator about the delay; they are often the only written record.
- Pin down the arrival time in Egypt, even from your hotel transfer times.
- Gather receipts for food or a hotel paid for at the airport.
- Separate outbound and return: only the flight that left Europe falls under EU261.
Care at the airport
| Distance | Meals and drinks after |
|---|---|
| Up to 1,500 km | 2 hours |
| 1,500 to 3,500 km | 3 hours |
| Over 3,500 km | 4 hours |
| Delay of 5 hours or more | Ticket refund if you did not travel |

On a single booking starting in the EU, the final destination and the overall delay are what count. More on the FlyEgypt delayed flight page.
Cancelled FlyEgypt flight
Roughly 14 in 100 of our FlyEgypt files concern a cancellation, including those linked to the October 2024 shutdown.
The price of the flight that did not operate, now best sought from the tour operator, bank or insurer.
€250 to €600 if the flight from Europe was cancelled with less than 14 days' notice.
| Notice given | Compensation |
|---|---|
| 14 days or more | No, only a refund or alternative flight |
| 7 to 13 days | Yes, unless the alternative left no more than 2 hours early and arrived under 4 hours late |
| Under 7 days | Yes, unless the alternative left no more than 1 hour early and arrived under 2 hours late |
Retimed flights. A big change to the departure time announced shortly before travel can count as a cancellation. See the FlyEgypt cancelled flight page.
FlyEgypt overbooking
Denied boarding barely features in our files, at around 1 case in 100. Still, if you were left behind at a European airport because the flight was oversold, compensation was due immediately. Read our guide to FlyEgypt overbooking.
Strikes and FlyEgypt flights
A delay caused by FlyEgypt's own staff striking would still have triggered compensation: the EU Court of Justice treats such action as part of the carrier's normal business (case C-28/20). A French or Italian air traffic control strike is different, being outside the airline's control.
FlyEgypt's reasons for refusing
With so few aircraft, knock-on delays were a business risk, unless an extraordinary event at the root can be proved.
Routine faults do not let the airline off.
EU Court of Justice, case C-549/07These must be backed by hard data for that flight and time slot.
For a non-EU carrier the leg from Egypt sits outside EU261.
FlyEgypt flights from Egypt: what is left out
For an Egyptian carrier, the EU Regulation only works on the way out of Europe. Delays and cancellations on Sharm el-Sheikh–Naples or Hurghada–Lille carry no €250-600 entitlement. For those flights you may still rely on the Montreal Convention if you can prove actual loss, and on the tour operator's liability under a package.
FlyEgypt claims: on your own or with us
You track down a contact at a grounded Egyptian company and deal with the tour operator, your bank, the national enforcement body of the country where the flight departed or the civil courts.
We review your case free and tell you frankly whether it is worth pursuing. If you hand it to us and money is recovered, our fee is 25% + VAT; otherwise you pay nothing.

Time limits
EU261 sets no deadline; the law of the country where you bring the claim decides (case C-139/11). With a grounded airline, though, waiting only narrows the options.
How long it takes
With a working airline, an accepted claim is usually settled in a few weeks, or a few months if a formal demand or court case is needed. With FlyEgypt, timing depends on how its situation in Egypt is finally resolved and cannot be predicted.
Lost bags on a FlyEgypt flight
Luggage is governed by the Montreal Convention, on the return from Egypt too: file a PIR at the airport and a written claim within 7 days for damage or 21 days for late delivery.
