Novair compensation: the Swedish charter airline stopped flying in 2023
Novair (Nova Airlines AB) was the Stockholm-based charter carrier that flew holidaymakers booked with the tour operator Apollo from Scandinavia to the Mediterranean, the Canary Islands and Egypt. It no longer operates: its final flight was on 9 October 2023, and the company filed for bankruptcy the following month. If you were delayed, cancelled or bumped on a Novair flight, we still accept your claim and assess it individually.
Because Novair held a Swedish operating licence, it counted as an EU airline. Regulation (EC) 261/2004 therefore applied to departures from Sweden, Denmark, Norway and the rest of the EU, and also to return flights from Egypt and other non-EU countries.

How much Novair owed each passenger
Your package price makes no difference: only the great-circle distance counts. Novair's network was almost entirely medium and long haul, so the higher bands were the norm:
| Distance | Example route | Compensation |
|---|---|---|
| 1,500 to 3,500 km | Stockholm–Crete (about 2,700 km) | €400 |
| Over 3,500 km within the EU | Stockholm–Gran Canaria | €400 |
| Over 3,500 km outside the EU | Stockholm–Hurghada | €600 |
The right belongs to each traveller individually. A couple with two children in their own seats, landing back from Egypt four hours late, were owed €2,400 between them.
Delayed Novair flight: what you need now
With a few years gone by, the key is piecing the trip back together:
- Your Apollo booking confirmation showing the N9 flight number and times.
- Boarding passes, or at least the booking reference from an old email.
- Texts from Apollo or Novair announcing the new departure time.
- Receipts for meals or taxis paid for while you waited.
- Any reply to a complaint you sent at the time.
Care while you waited
| Flight length | Meals and drinks after |
|---|---|
| Up to 1,500 km | 2 hours |
| 1,500–3,500 km | 3 hours |
| Over 3,500 km | 4 hours |
| 5-hour wait | Option to cancel and get your fare back |
Missed onward connection
If you reached Stockholm on another flight before boarding the Novair charter, the booking structure matters: on a single ticket the delay at your final destination counts; on separate tickets each flight stands alone. More on the delayed Novair flight page.
Cancelled Novair flights
Always due, and the choice was yours.
On top of that, when notice came late and the cause lay within Novair.
| Notice given | Compensation |
|---|---|
| 14 days or more | No |
| 7 to 13 days | Yes, unless the alternative left no more than 2 hours earlier and landed less than 4 hours late |
| Under 7 days | Yes, unless the alternative left no more than 1 hour earlier and landed less than 2 hours late |
Apollo packages. If you bought flight and hotel together, package travel rules also protect you against the tour operator, separately from Regulation 261. See the cancelled Novair flight page.
Overbooking on a Novair charter
Denied boarding was uncommon on holiday flights sold as packages, but where it happened the compensation was owed at the gate along with a seat on another flight. Read our guide to Novair overbooking.
Strikes and Novair flights
Industrial action by Novair's own pilots or cabin crew did not release the airline from paying (CJEU, case C-28/20). A walkout by French air traffic controllers on the route south to the Canaries was different: only the duty of care remained.
Novair's usual reasons for saying no
With just two A321neos, one fault disrupted the whole rotation. That is an operational risk, not bad luck.
CJEU, case C-549/07What matters is what caused the first delay of the day.
If the runways genuinely could not be used, compensation falls away.
Novair's bankruptcy: what it means for you
The closure was announced in February 2023, after the Apollo contract was not renewed and the Danish owner, Jet Nordic, failed to win new business. Compensation claims are now debts owed by a company in Swedish bankruptcy proceedings, so payment is slow and depends on what funds remain. That is why we tell you upfront, honestly, whether it is worth going ahead.
How to claim Novair compensation
You need to find the right procedure in Sweden and write in English or Swedish. You can also go to the national enforcement body of the country where the flight departed, or to court.
We prepare the claim and pursue it with our own lawyers. You only pay if it succeeds: 25% + VAT, leaving you €278 of €400. Legal costs are ours, even if the case is lost.
Documents
- Apollo travel documentsOr your Novair boarding pass.
- Passport or IDChildren's too.
- Proof of the disruptionEmails, texts, receipts.
Time limits
National law sets the deadline, not the Regulation (case C-139/11). For flights in 2022 and 2023 there is often still time: enter the date and we'll check.
How long payment takes
With an airline in liquidation there is no standard timescale and it can take several months. We email you whenever something changes.
Lost luggage on a Novair flight
Baggage falls under the Montreal Convention: a Property Irregularity Report (PIR) at the arrival airport, then a written claim within 7 days for damage or within 21 days of delivery for delay. Those claims also now sit in the bankruptcy.
