Thai Airways compensation: â¬600 on long-haul flights out of Europe
Thai Airways International, Thailand's national airline, flies from its Bangkok Suvarnabhumi hub to London, Paris, Frankfurt, Milan and other European cities. More than 20 Thai passengers have already brought their claims to us, almost all for long-haul departures from Europe. On distances like these, compensation is always the top rate: â¬600 per passenger.
There's a catch. Thai is a non-EU airline, so Regulation (EC) 261/2004 only applies to its flights departing from the EU, the European Economic Area or Switzerland. Flights from Bangkok back to Europe are not covered.
Delay leaving Europe

How much Thai Airways pays on our customers' routes
The amount is fixed and doesn't depend on your fare. Every Thai route our customers report is over 3,500 km.
| Thai route | Distance | Compensation |
|---|---|---|
| ParisâBangkok | about 9,400 km | â¬600 |
| FrankfurtâBangkok | about 9,000 km | â¬600 |
| MilanâBangkok | about 9,000 km | â¬600 |
| OsloâBangkok | about 8,600 km | â¬600 |
| ParisâPhuket via Bangkok | about 9,700 km | â¬600 |
Every traveller is entitled: a family of four on a FrankfurtâBangkok flight that landed 5 hours late could receive â¬2,400, and children with their own seat count in full. On our form, enter the flight once and add your fellow passengers.
Thai Airways flight delayed: what to do
About 7 in 10 Thai claims we handle are for delays. On a twelve-hour flight, one technical fault or aircraft swap can add hours, and passengers heading on to Phuket, Chiang Mai or Krabi often miss their connection in Bangkok. Before you board:
- Photograph every boarding pass, including the domestic leg in Thailand.
- Ask Thai staff for the reason and note what they tell you.
- Keep notifications from thaiairways.com or your travel agent.
- Write down your actual arrival time in Bangkok or at your final stop.
- Don't accept vouchers or miles in place of cash until you know what you're owed.
Meals and hotels while you wait in Europe
Before take-off from a European airport, Thai must provide meals, drinks and, if you leave the next day, a hotel and transfers.
| Distance | Care after |
|---|---|
| Up to 1,500 km | 2 hours |
| 1,500 to 3,500 km | 3 hours |
| Over 3,500 km, like every flight to Bangkok | 4 hours |
| Over 5 hours | You can give up the trip and get a refund |
Missed connection in Bangkok
If ParisâBangkok and BangkokâPhuket were on one booking and you reached Phuket 3 hours or more late, the final destination is what counts. On separate tickets only the first flight is assessed. More on our page about a delayed Thai Airways flight.
Thai Airways flight cancelled
Roughly 1 in 4 of our Thai claims involves a cancellation. A refund and compensation are two separate rights.
Choose between your money back and another flight, including on a Star Alliance partner.
On top, if the flight was leaving Europe and you were told less than 14 days before.
| Notice | Compensation |
|---|---|
| 14 days or more | No; refund or new flight still apply |
| 7 to 13 days | Yes, unless the alternative leaves no more than 2 hours earlier and lands less than 4 hours later |
| Under 7 days | Yes, unless the alternative leaves no more than 1 hour earlier and lands less than 2 hours later |
Schedule change. Did Thai move your departure by many hours shortly before you flew? It may count as a cancellation. See our page on a cancelled Thai Airways flight.
Thai Airways overbooking
If you're turned away at the gate in Paris or Frankfurt because the flight is full, Thai owes you â¬600 on the spot, plus another flight or a refund. Nothing is due if the refusal is down to you, for instance a passport without enough validity for entry to Thailand. Full details in our guide to Thai Airways overbooking.
Strikes and Thai Airways flights
A walkout by Thai's own employees normally doesn't stop compensation: the EU Court of Justice treats strikes by an airline's staff as part of its normal activity (case C-28/20). On flights out of Europe, air traffic control strikes, notably in France, are more common; those are extraordinary, so no compensation, but meals and rerouting are still owed.
Thai Airways rejected your claim? Typical replies
True for flights from Bangkok to Europe; wrong for departures from Paris, Frankfurt or Oslo.
A fault on an Airbus A350 or Boeing 777 is part of normal operations, unless it's a hidden manufacturing defect.
EU Court of Justice, case C-549/07A late inbound flight isn't enough: Thai must prove the extraordinary event behind it.
Only if they really held up that flight. We check slots and weather for your departure time.
Flying Thai from London
Since 1 January 2021, Thai flights departing the UK fall under UK law rather than the EU Regulation. The rules are almost identical, with compensation set in pounds, and the CAA oversees them. Flights from Bangkok to London are not covered by either set of rules.
- Not covered: BangkokâLondon, BangkokâParis and other Thai flights into Europe
- Covered only as part of one booking from Europe: domestic flights within Thailand
- Covered after all: a TG-coded return flight actually operated by a European Star Alliance airline
Thai Airways today: hub, Star Alliance and Thai Smile
Thai is headquartered in Bangkok, operates from Suvarnabhumi and was a founding member of Star Alliance; its loyalty scheme is Royal Orchid Plus. Its regional subsidiary Thai Smile flew for the last time at the end of 2023 and was folded back into the main airline. In June 2025 Thai exited the court-supervised rehabilitation plan it entered in 2020.
How to claim from Thai Airways
You can claim on your own through the customer support section of thaiairways.com, quoting your booking reference and ticket number.
Free, but you deal with an airline based in Asia. If it refuses, you can go to the national enforcement body of the country where the flight departed (the CAA for UK departures) or to court.
Two minutes online and an e-signature. We handle the claim, the formal demand and court action with our own lawyers. You pay 25% + VAT only if you win: â¬417 of the â¬600 is yours. Legal costs are ours, even if we lose.
Already turned down by Thai?
Send us the letter. If the reason doesn't stand up, we start again with a formal demand.
Documents to have ready
- Thai e-ticketWith ticket number and booking reference.
- PassportFor every passenger.
- Airline noticesRescheduling emails and expense receipts.
Time limits
The Regulation sets no deadline; national law in the country where you claim decides (EU Court of Justice, case C-139/11). A trip to Thailand from a few years ago may still be claimable: enter the date.
How long Thai Airways takes to pay
If Thai accepts, payment usually arrives within a few weeks. With a non-EU carrier, a formal demand or court case before a European judge can take a few months. Once the money reaches us, we pass on your share.
Delayed or damaged luggage with Thai
Bags are covered by the Montreal Convention. File a PIR at the arrival airport, then write to Thai within 7 days for damage, or within 21 days of delivery if your case turned up late.
