Red Wings Airlines compensation: what is still covered after 2022
Red Wings Airlines is a Russian carrier, IATA code WZ, based at Moscow's Zhukovsky airport with major bases in Yekaterinburg, St Petersburg and other Russian cities. It is still flying, mainly Superjet 100 and Tupolev Tu-214 aircraft, on domestic Russian routes and to countries such as Turkey, Armenia, Egypt and the UAE. Since late February 2022, however, Russian airlines have been shut out of EU airspace: Red Wings no longer operates any flights to or from the EU.
As a non-EU airline, Red Wings only has to apply Regulation (EC) 261/2004 on flights departing from a European airport. A Moscow–Europe flight was never covered, even before 2022, and the same goes today for its flights out of Istanbul, Yerevan or Dubai.
EU departures up to 2022

CoveredRussia to the EU
EU rules do not apply to inbound flights by non-EU airlines.
Not coveredToday's network
Domestic Russian flights and routes to non-EU countries fall outside.
Not coveredFlights axed by the ban
Cancellations caused by the sanctions are a special case.

How much a Red Wings flight from Europe is worth
The amount depends on the distance from the departure airport to your final destination, not on what the ticket cost.
| Distance | Sample distances | Amount |
|---|---|---|
| Up to 1,500 km | Helsinki–St Petersburg, Riga–Moscow | €250 |
| 1,500 to 3,500 km | Rome–Moscow, Milan–Moscow | €400 |
| Over 3,500 km | Rome–Novosibirsk | €600 |
Each passenger gets their own payment, and children with a seat of their own count as adults.
Delayed Red Wings flight: evidence to dig out
Because these flights date back a few years, collect what you still have now:
- The booking confirmation showing the WZ flight number and date.
- Your boarding pass, even just a photo of it.
- Texts or emails announcing the delay.
- The actual arrival time, if you noted it.
- Receipts for food or a hotel while you waited.
Care at the airport
| Distance | Meals after |
|---|---|
| Up to 1,500 km | 2 hours |
| 1,500 to 3,500 km | 3 hours |
| Over 3,500 km | 4 hours |
| Over 5 hours | Right to cancel the trip and be refunded |
Onward connections in Russia
On a single booking that started in the EU, if the delay made you miss the next flight, the arrival time at your last stop is what counts. See our page on Red Wings delay compensation.
Red Wings flight cancelled
Always due after a cancellation, as an alternative to another flight.
Only for a flight leaving the EU, cancelled with under 14 days' notice and without extraordinary circumstances.
| Notice given | Compensation |
|---|---|
| 14 days or more | Not due |
| 7–13 days | Due, unless the new flight left no more than 2 hours earlier and landed within 4 hours |
| Under 7 days | Due, unless the new flight left no more than 1 hour earlier and landed within 2 hours |
February 2022. Flights scrapped because European airspace closed overnight will almost certainly count as extraordinary circumstances, but the fare refund is still owed. More on Red Wings cancellation compensation.
Bumped from a Red Wings flight
If you were left behind at a European airport because the flight was oversold, compensation was payable on the spot, along with an alternative flight. Read our guide to Red Wings overbooking.
Crew strikes
A strike by the airline's own pilots and cabin crew is not an extraordinary circumstance (EU Court of Justice, case C-28/20); one by air traffic controllers is.
Typical objections and how they stand
Right: for a Russian airline, only departures from Europe are covered.
Maintenance is part of an airline's normal risks.
EU Court of Justice, case C-549/07Rules out compensation for flights lost in those days, but not the fare refund.
Red Wings and the ban on Russian flights in Europe
Under the 2022 sanctions the EU closed its airspace to Russian carriers, and Switzerland, Norway and Iceland followed suit; the UK did the same. Red Wings shifted its international flying to countries that do not apply the ban. For a UK or European traveller today, a Red Wings flight, even as part of a connection, will almost always fall outside the rules.
Making the claim
You can write to the airline yourself and, if it refuses, go to the national enforcement body of the country where the flight departed, or to court. Or leave it to us: nothing upfront, 25% + VAT only if compensation is paid (you keep €173.75 of €250 and €278 of €400), and legal costs are ours even if we lose.
- Booking and boarding passDigital copies are fine.
- Passport or IDFor each traveller.
How long do you have? It depends on the law of the country where you claim (EU Court of Justice, case C-139/11): for pre-2022 flights, that is the first thing we check.
How long payment takes
With an airline that accepts, a few weeks is typical. With a Russian carrier that does not respond, a formal demand and court action are needed: allow several months.
Bags
Lost or damaged luggage falls under the Montreal Convention: a PIR at the airport, then a claim within 7 days for damage or 21 days for delay.
