Air Moldova compensation (Air Moldavia): what you can still claim

Air Moldova, often searched for as Air Moldavia, was Moldova's flag carrier, based at Chișinău airport. It suspended all flights in early May 2023 while seeking a restructuring, then lost its air operator certificate and was declared insolvent by a Moldovan court. It no longer flies. If one of its flights left you stranded or landed you hours late, we will still assess your claim and tell you what is realistic against an insolvent airline.

One point decides everything: Air Moldova is not an EU airline. Regulation (EC) 261/2004 only covers its flights departing from an airport in the EU, Norway, Iceland or Switzerland, such as a flight from Italy to Chișinău. Flights from Chișinău into the EU fall outside the Regulation.

How much Air Moldova compensation is worth

The sum is fixed and depends only on the distance of the flight that left Europe, not on the fare.

Air Moldova delayed flight: the evidence you need

With the airline grounded, your claim rests on what you kept:

Air Moldova overbooking

Strikes and Air Moldova flights

If a flight from the EU was cancelled because Air Moldova employees went on strike, compensation is normally owed: the EU Court of Justice sees it as part of the carrier's business (case C-28/20). It is different if air traffic controllers at the departure airport were striking.

Air Moldova today: suspension and insolvency

Privatised in 2018 and sold to the Civil Aviation Group consortium, which included Romania's Blue Air, Air Moldova flew under IATA code 9U and ran the Air Moldova Club loyalty scheme. After the 2023 shutdown its operator certificate lapsed and Moldovan courts declared it insolvent. Any claim now has to go through that procedure, and we are open about the odds before we start.
