ASL Airlines Ireland compensation: when you can claim for a delay or cancellation

ASL Airlines Ireland is the Irish carrier known until 2015 as Air Contractors. Today it mainly flies freighters, but it has also carried passengers on charters and for other airlines. If your flight arrived very late or was cancelled, you may be owed €250, €400 or €600 per person.

The airline is based in Swords, near Dublin, and holds an Irish licence, so it counts as an EU carrier. Regulation (EC) 261/2004 covers its flights leaving an EU airport and also those landing in the EU from outside it.

Late arrival

You reach your final destination at least 3 hours behind schedule.

3 hours or more

Cancelled flight

The charter was called off with under 14 days' notice.

Late notice

Bumped

Valid ticket, on time at the gate, yet left behind because the flight was full.

Owed straight away

Exclusions

Events beyond the carrier's control, such as a severe storm, provided the airline can prove them.

Extraordinary circumstances

The carrier's name appears on your booking next to "operated by". Check your flight for free.

How much ASL Airlines Ireland may have to pay

The holiday price is irrelevant: distance decides. Bands measured from Dublin, the airline's main base:

Distance Examples from Dublin Amount
Up to 1,500 km Dublin–London, Dublin–Paris €250
1,500 to 3,500 km Dublin–Tenerife, Dublin–Athens €400
Over 3,500 km Dublin–New York €600

Each passenger claims separately: five friends on a Dublin–Tenerife charter that landed 4 hours late can ask for €2,000 between them. Children with their own seat are entitled to the same sum.

Delayed ASL Airlines Ireland flight: what to do

The delay is measured to the moment an aircraft door opens at your destination.

  1. Photograph your boarding pass, which shows the flight number.
  2. Ask the holiday rep why you are delayed and note the answer.
  3. Record when the doors opened on arrival.
  4. Keep receipts for food, taxis or a hotel.
  5. Turn down discount vouchers offered instead of cash compensation.

Meals and hotels while you wait

The operating carrier must look after you free of charge, even if you bought a package holiday.

Route Care from
Up to 1,500 km 2 hours
1,500–3,500 km 3 hours
Over 3,500 km 4 hours
More than 5 hours You can abandon the trip and get your money back

Missed connection

On a single booking, what counts is the delay at your final destination and the total distance; separate tickets are assessed one by one. More on our page about ASL Airlines Ireland delay compensation.

Added when you were told about the cancellation less than two weeks in advance.

Strikes and ASL Airlines Ireland flights

When the airline's own pilots or engineers walk out, the EU Court of Justice treats it as a risk inherent in running an airline, so payment is normally due (case C-28/20). An air traffic control strike rules out compensation, not meals or rerouting.

Has ASL Airlines Ireland turned your claim down?

A carrier flying for others may blame someone else or an unforeseeable event.

Usually payable
"Technical fault"

Maintenance is part of normal operations: a fault is not enough, except for hidden manufacturing defects.

EU Court of Justice, case C-549/07
It depends
"It was another airline's flight"

What matters is who had operational responsibility: we check your documents and contact the right carrier.

Often not payable
"Fog or high winds in Dublin"

Weather only counts if it really grounded that flight: we check the airport data.

Has ASL Airlines Ireland already said no? We review the reason and, if it doesn't hold up, follow up with a formal demand and court action. Check your flight.

From Air Contractors to ASL: mainly a cargo airline

ASL Airlines Ireland belongs to ASL Aviation Holdings and mostly carries freight around Europe and to North America. Its passenger work has been charters and aircraft leased with crew to scheduled airlines: in past years it flew transatlantic services for Aer Lingus. Who owes you money depends on how that particular flight was set up.

ASL Airlines Ireland compensation: frequently asked questions

Is ASL Airlines Ireland the same company as Air Contractors?
Yes. Air Contractors was renamed ASL Airlines Ireland in 2015 and is part of ASL Aviation Holdings. Flights operated under the old name carry the same rights.
Does EU261 apply to ASL Airlines Ireland?
Yes. It is based in Swords, near Dublin, with an Irish licence, so the regulation covers its flights leaving the EU and those arriving in the EU from outside it.
How much can I get for an ASL charter that landed 3 hours late?
€250 per person up to 1,500 km, such as Dublin–Paris, €400 between 1,500 and 3,500 km, such as Dublin–Tenerife, and €600 beyond 3,500 km. The price of the package makes no difference.
My Aer Lingus flight was operated by ASL Airlines Ireland: who do I claim from?
It depends on which airline had operational responsibility for the flight, which is not always the name on the aircraft. Enter your details in our form and we will work out the right carrier.
I booked a package holiday. Can I still claim?
Yes. EU261 compensation applies to charter flights sold as part of a package on the same terms as flight-only bookings.
Does ASL Airlines Ireland have a passenger claim form?
No. It does not sell tickets to the public, so there is no dedicated form. You can write to the carrier or the tour operator, or let us do it.
Does a technical fault cancel my right to compensation?
Usually not. The EU Court of Justice (case C-549/07) treats technical problems as part of normal airline operations, except for hidden manufacturing defects revealed by the manufacturer or the authorities.
What does DelayFlight24 charge for an ASL Airlines Ireland claim?
Nothing up front. If we recover the money we keep 25% + VAT: you receive €173.75 out of €250, €278 out of €400 and €417 out of €600. Legal costs are ours, even if the case is lost.
