Blue Bird Airways compensation: your rights on flights to and from Israel
Blue Bird Airways (flight code BZ) is a Greek airline based at Heraklion airport in Crete. Most of its flights connect Tel Aviv's Ben Gurion airport with Europe: Athens and the Greek islands, Budapest, Barcelona, Berlin and, since 2026, several Italian cities. We have handled more than 220 Blue Bird claims so far. If your flight landed 3 hours late, was cancelled at short notice or left without you, you could be owed €250 or €400 per passenger.
The airline is owned by an Israeli travel group, but what matters legally is its operating licence, and that is Greek. Blue Bird is therefore an EU carrier, and Regulation (EC) 261/2004 protects you in both directions: from Europe to Tel Aviv and from Tel Aviv back to Europe.
Late arrival
Your Blue Bird flight reaches its final destination at least 3 hours behind schedule.

Under 14 days' noticeBumped from the flight
You turned up on time with a confirmed seat but were refused boarding against your will.
Payable straight awayNo compensation
When Blue Bird proves an extraordinary event, such as an airspace closure ordered by the authorities or an air traffic control strike.
Extraordinary circumstancesEnter your airports and travel date and we will tell you within two minutes whether you have a claim. Check your Blue Bird flight.
How much Blue Bird Airways pays: €250 or €400
The fare you paid makes no difference. The amount depends only on the distance between your departure airport and final destination, and no Blue Bird route is longer than 3,500 km.
| Flight distance | Blue Bird routes | Compensation |
|---|---|---|
| Up to 1,500 km | Heraklion–Tel Aviv, Athens–Tel Aviv | €250 |
| 1,500 to 3,500 km | Budapest–Tel Aviv, Barcelona–Tel Aviv, Berlin–Tel Aviv, Rome–Tel Aviv | €400 |
| Over 3,500 km | Not on the Blue Bird network | €600 |
Each traveller on the booking has their own claim. A couple with two children on a Berlin–Tel Aviv flight that arrived 5 hours late could claim €1,600 between them, since children with their own seat count as adults.
Blue Bird flight delayed? What to do
Delays make up 78 in every 100 Blue Bird claims we receive, mostly on Heraklion–Tel Aviv, Athens–Tel Aviv and Budapest–Tel Aviv. The airline runs a small fleet of Boeing 737s back and forth all day, so a morning problem can still be felt on the last rotation of the evening. What counts is the moment the aircraft door opens at your destination. While you wait:
- Keep your boarding pass, whether printed at the airport or downloaded after online check-in on the Blue Bird website.
- Save every update from Blue Bird or the travel agent who sold you the trip, including revised departure times.
- Note your real arrival time and take a photo of the arrivals screen.
- Ask for meal vouchers at the ground handling desk and keep receipts for anything you buy yourself.
- Do not sign away your rights in exchange for a voucher towards a future trip.
Care Blue Bird must provide at the airport
Separate from compensation, Blue Bird has to give you food and drink while you wait and, if you are stuck overnight, a hotel and transport to it.
| Flight distance | Care from |
|---|---|
| Up to 1,500 km | 2 hours |
| 1,500 to 3,500 km | 3 hours |
| Over 3,500 km | 4 hours |
| Delay over 5 hours | You may cancel the trip and get your fare back |
Missed connection
With a single booking covering an onward flight, the delay is measured at your final destination and compensation is based on the total distance. Separate tickets are assessed one by one. More on our page about Blue Bird Airways delayed flight compensation.
Blue Bird flight cancelled: refund and compensation
Cancellations account for 22 in every 100 Blue Bird claims we handle. Taking a refund or a new flight does not stop you claiming compensation as well.
Always due after a cancellation: you choose between your money back and another flight.
Due on top when the warning came less than 14 days before departure and there was no extraordinary cause.
| Notice given | Compensation |
|---|---|
| 14 days or more | No, but refund or rebooking still apply |
| 7 to 13 days | Yes, unless the new flight leaves no more than 2 hours earlier and lands less than 4 hours later |
| Under 7 days | Yes, unless the new flight leaves no more than 1 hour earlier and lands less than 2 hours later |
Big schedule change. If Blue Bird moves your departure by several hours shortly before travel, the EU Court of Justice may treat it as a cancellation. See our page on Blue Bird Airways cancelled flight compensation.
Overbooking on Blue Bird Airways
None of our Blue Bird cases so far involves overbooking, but the rule is simple: if you are kept off a full flight against your will, compensation is owed at once. It is not owed if boarding was refused because your passport or entry documents for Israel were not in order. Read more about Blue Bird Airways overbooking and denied boarding.
Strikes and Blue Bird flights
When the airline's own pilots or cabin crew walk out, compensation is normally payable: the EU Court of Justice treats a strike by a carrier's staff as part of its ordinary business (case C-28/20). A strike by Greek or Italian air traffic controllers, or by airport workers at Ben Gurion, is different: no compensation, although Blue Bird must still look after you and rebook or refund you.
Blue Bird rejected your claim? Common reasons
On flights to and from Israel, refusals often mention security. Here is how we assess the usual explanations.
A genuine closure ordered by the authorities is extraordinary. We still check that it actually covered your flight time.
Faults found during maintenance are part of running an airline, unless the manufacturer has flagged a hidden design defect.
EU Court of Justice, case C-549/07A knock-on delay is not extraordinary in itself. Blue Bird has to show what caused the first delay.
Blue Bird staff on strike: payable. Air traffic control or airport staff: not payable.
EU Court of Justice, case C-28/20Blue Bird flights booked through Holiday Lines or a package
Blue Bird belongs to the Israeli travel group Kavei Hufsha (Holiday Lines), which also runs the airline's booking website and sells many seats as part of holiday packages. Whoever sold you the ticket, compensation is owed by the airline that operated the flight, shown on your booking next to the flight number.
How to claim from Blue Bird Airways: on your own or with us
You can write to Blue Bird yourself through the Contact Us section of bluebirdair.com. Here is how the two routes compare.
Free, but you deal with the airline and any refusal yourself. After that, your options are the national enforcement body of the country where the flight departed or the courts, at your own cost.
Two minutes to fill in the form and sign online. We handle the claim, the formal demand and any legal action with our own lawyers. You pay only if you win: 25% + VAT, leaving you €173.75 of €250. Legal costs are ours, even if the case is lost.
Already turned down?
Forward us Blue Bird's answer. If the reason is weak, we restart with a formal demand.
Documents you need
- Booking or boarding passThe Blue Bird confirmation or your package documents.
- PassportFor every passenger, children included.
- EvidenceDelay or cancellation messages and receipts for meals, taxis or hotels.
Time limits
The Regulation sets no deadline of its own: national law decides, as the EU Court of Justice confirmed in case C-139/11, so limits vary by country. Enter your flight date and we will check.
How long Blue Bird compensation takes
If Blue Bird accepts, payment usually comes within a few weeks. If it refuses or stays silent, a formal demand and possible court action add a few months. Once we are paid, we transfer your share.
Lost or damaged luggage on Blue Bird
Baggage falls under the Montreal Convention rather than Regulation 261. Fill in a Property Irregularity Report (PIR) before leaving the baggage hall, then write to Blue Bird within 7 days for damage or within 21 days of getting your bag back if it was delayed.
