  • Delay: if you arrive 3 hours or more late, Eurowings owes €250 to €600 per person, depending on the distance.
  • Cancellation: you are owed compensation if you were told less than 14 days before departure, on top of a ticket refund or an alternative flight.
  • Not owed for extraordinary circumstances (severe weather, air traffic control strikes). Technical faults and strikes by the airline's own staff usually are not extraordinary.
  • With DelayFlight24 you pay nothing upfront: if Eurowings pays, you keep €173.75 out of €250 or €278 out of €400.

Eurowings compensation: when you can claim €250, €400 or €600

Eurowings is the Lufthansa Group's low-cost airline, headquartered in Düsseldorf with bases across Germany, from Cologne/Bonn to Hamburg, Stuttgart and Berlin. It also flies to the UK, from London Heathrow, Manchester, Birmingham and Edinburgh. We have handled more than 100 Eurowings claims for over 170 travellers, many on flights from Lisbon, Porto and Barcelona. If your flight landed 3 hours late, was cancelled close to departure or you were refused boarding, you may be owed €250 to €600 each.

Eurowings GmbH is German, so it is an EU carrier: Regulation (EC) 261/2004 applies to flights leaving the EU and to flights coming into the EU from the UK, the Balkans, Morocco or the Middle East.

Delay

You reach your final destination 3 hours or more behind the time on your ticket.

Threshold: 3 hours

Cancellation

Eurowings warns you less than 14 days ahead and the replacement wrecks your timings.

Under two weeks

Bumped

Confirmed seat, on time at the gate, but left behind because the flight was full.

Immediate compensation

Exclusions

Events Eurowings could not prevent, such as a snowstorm or a strike by German airport staff.

Extraordinary circumstances

Enter your flight and find out in 2 minutes whether you are owed anything. Check your Eurowings flight.

How much Eurowings pays: examples from the most claimed routes

The fare you bought makes no difference. The amount depends on the distance flown to your final destination.

Distance Eurowings routes Amount
Up to 1,500 km Milan–Cologne, Hamburg–Milan, Barcelona–Cologne €250
1,500 to 3,500 km Lisbon–Cologne, Porto–Hamburg, Porto–Stuttgart €400
Over 3,500 km Düsseldorf–Dubai, Berlin–Abu Dhabi €600

Everyone on the booking gets their own payment, including children with a seat: three friends on a Barcelona–Cologne flight cancelled two days before can claim €750 between them. On routes over 3,500 km a delay of 3 hours or more is enough for €600.

Eurowings flight delayed: what to do

About half of the Eurowings claims we handle involve a delay, often on departures from Düsseldorf, Lisbon or Cologne. What counts is when the doors open at your destination, not touchdown. Meanwhile:

  1. Save your boarding pass with the EW flight number, digital copies included.
  2. Screenshot every Eurowings notice about the delay and the reason given.
  3. Check the operating airline on your confirmation: it may be Eurowings Europe.
  4. Keep receipts for food, taxis and hotels you pay for yourself.
  5. Do not swap compensation for Miles & More miles or vouchers before you know the cash value.

Airport care from Eurowings

Whatever caused the delay, Eurowings must provide meals and drinks and, if you fly the next morning, a hotel and transfers.

Route Care from
Up to 1,500 km, e.g. Hamburg–Milan 2 hours
1,500–3,500 km, e.g. Lisbon–Cologne 3 hours
Over 3,500 km 4 hours
More than 5 hours late Abandon the trip and get a full refund

Missed connection in Düsseldorf or Cologne

On one ticket, say Porto–Cologne–Berlin, if the first leg runs late and you reach Berlin at least 3 hours behind schedule, compensation is based on the whole journey. Two separate bookings are judged one by one. More on our page about Eurowings delayed flight compensation.

Eurowings flight cancelled: your options

More than one in three Eurowings claims we receive starts with a cancellation. Accepting the new flight or refund Eurowings offers does not cost you your compensation.

Replacement flight or money back

Rebooking on the first available flight, on a date you choose, or a full refund of the fare.

Fixed compensation

An extra €250 to €600 if Eurowings told you less than two weeks before departure.

Cancellation notice Compensation due?
14 days or more No: only a new flight or refund
7–13 days Yes, unless the flight offered leaves no more than 2 hours earlier and lands less than 4 hours late
Under 7 days Yes, unless the flight offered leaves no more than 1 hour earlier and lands less than 2 hours late

Retimed flight. If Eurowings moves your Milan–Cologne flight from evening to early morning, the EU Court of Justice may treat the change as a cancellation. Full details on our page about Eurowings cancelled flight compensation.

Eurowings overbooking: more common than you think

In our data more than one Eurowings claim in ten concerns denied boarding, a high share compared with other airlines. If you held a valid booking and met the check-in and boarding deadlines, compensation is due immediately, plus another flight. It is not owed if you were refused for invalid documents or reaching the gate late. Read more on Eurowings overbooking and denied boarding.

Eurowings strikes: who walks out matters

A strike by Eurowings pilots or cabin crew does not let the airline off: the EU Court of Justice treats it as part of its normal business risk (case C-28/20). Strikes by ground handlers or security staff at German airports, on the other hand, are usually extraordinary: you keep the right to care and to choose between a refund and a new flight.

Eurowings refused your claim? The usual replies

Usually owed
"Unforeseen technical damage"

Faults found during routine checks are an ordinary risk for the airline, unless they are hidden design flaws reported by the manufacturer.

EU Court of Justice, case C-549/07
It depends
"Strike"

It pays if Eurowings employees strike; it normally does not if controllers or airport workers do.

EU Court of Justice, case C-28/20
Usually owed
"Crew shortage"

Planning rosters and standby crew is the airline's job: a lack of staff is not an outside event.

Has Eurowings already said no? A first refusal is not a verdict. We review the reason and, if it is weak, follow up with a formal demand and court action at our expense. Check your Eurowings flight.

Eurowings, Eurowings Europe and Lufthansa: who is liable

Some Eurowings flights are operated by its subsidiary Eurowings Europe, based in Malta with its own air operator's certificate; all are sold under the Eurowings brand. If you bought a Lufthansa ticket with a Eurowings leg, the airline that operated the disrupted flight pays. The loyalty scheme is Miles & More, since the old Boomerang Club has closed. The group's long-haul holiday flights belong to a separate airline, Discover Airlines.

Eurowings flights from the UK, Kosovo, Morocco and the Gulf

As an EU airline, Eurowings also owes compensation on flights arriving in the EU from outside, for example from:

  • London Heathrow, Manchester, Birmingham and Edinburgh to Germany
  • Pristina, Tirana, Sarajevo and Belgrade
  • Marrakech, Agadir, Cairo and Marsa Alam
  • Dubai, Abu Dhabi, Jeddah and Tel Aviv

Flights departing the UK are also covered by UK261, with amounts in pounds: we pick whichever works better for you.

Claiming from Eurowings: DIY or with DelayFlight24

Eurowings takes compensation requests through its online customer service, using your booking code and flight number.

DIY

No cost, but you chase a German airline yourself. If it refuses, you can go to the national enforcement body of the country where the flight departed (the CAA in the UK) or to court, at your own time and expense.

With DelayFlight24

Two minutes for the form and an e-signature, then we take care of the claim, formal demand and court case with our own lawyers. Fee only if you win: 25% + VAT, and legal costs are ours even if the case is lost.

Already turned down by Eurowings?

No problem: send us the airline's reply. If the reason given is not an extraordinary event, we start with a formal letter before action.

What you need

  • Booking confirmationOr your Eurowings boarding pass, digital is fine.
  • Passport or ID cardFor every traveller, children included.
  • Proof of the disruptionEurowings notices, photos of the departures board, receipts.

Deadline to claim

The Regulation is silent on time limits, so national law where you bring the claim decides (EU Court of Justice, case C-139/11). An older Eurowings flight may still be eligible: check now with your flight date.

How long Eurowings takes to pay

When Eurowings accepts the claim, the money usually arrives within a few weeks. After a refusal, a formal demand and possibly court are needed, which takes a few months. Once we are paid, we transfer your share.

Eurowings lost or damaged baggage

Bags are not covered by Regulation 261 but by the Montreal Convention. File a PIR at the baggage desk before leaving, then claim from Eurowings within 7 days for damage or within 21 days of delivery for a late bag.

Eurowings compensation: frequently asked questions

How much compensation does Eurowings pay for a delay?
If you arrive at least 3 hours late: €250 per person up to 1,500 km (for example Milan–Cologne), €400 between 1,500 and 3,500 km (Lisbon–Cologne, Porto–Hamburg) and €600 over 3,500 km, such as Düsseldorf–Dubai.
Is Eurowings an EU airline?
Yes. Eurowings GmbH is based in Düsseldorf and belongs to the Lufthansa Group, so Regulation 261/2004 covers flights leaving the EU and flights arriving in the EU from non-EU countries such as the UK, Kosovo or Morocco.
Can I claim for a Eurowings flight from London to Germany?
Yes. Because Eurowings is an EU airline, EU261 applies to its flights from the UK into the EU. Departures from the UK are also covered by UK261, and we choose the route that works best for you.
My flight was operated by Eurowings Europe. Who do I claim from?
Eurowings Europe is the Malta-based subsidiary that operates some flights sold by Eurowings. Your rights are the same: enter the flight in our form and we send the claim to the airline that actually operated it.
I had a Lufthansa ticket but flew Eurowings. Who pays?
The airline that operated the delayed or cancelled flight. If that leg was flown by Eurowings, the claim goes to Eurowings even though your ticket shows a Lufthansa code.
Eurowings offered me Miles & More miles instead of compensation. Should I accept?
Compensation is paid in cash; miles or vouchers are only possible if you agree in writing. Check the cash value first: it is usually the better deal.
I was bumped from a Eurowings flight. What am I entitled to?
If you had a confirmed booking and met the check-in deadline, you are owed €250 to €600 straight away, plus a new flight or refund and care while you wait.
How long do I have to claim from Eurowings?
The Regulation sets no time limit; national rules in the country where you claim apply. Many flights from previous years can still be claimed. Enter your flight date and we will tell you.
How much do I keep if DelayFlight24 handles my Eurowings claim?
We take 25% + VAT only if you are paid: you keep €173.75 from €250, €278 from €400 and €417 from €600. Nothing upfront, and legal costs are ours even if the case is lost.
