All Nippon Airways compensation: when ANA owes you €600 on flights from Europe to Japan
All Nippon Airways (ANA) is Japan's largest airline and a Star Alliance member, with its main hubs at Tokyo Haneda and Narita. Its European network includes Frankfurt, Munich, Paris, Brussels and, since late 2024, Milan and Stockholm, plus London Heathrow. Because ANA is a non-EU carrier, Regulation (EC) 261/2004 only applies when you depart from an airport in the EU, Iceland, Norway or Switzerland: Frankfurt–Tokyo is covered, Tokyo–Frankfurt is not.
Late into Tokyo
You reach Japan, or the last city on your ticket, three hours or more behind schedule.
From 3 hoursFlight axed
ANA cancels your European departure and gives you less than 14 days' warning.

You are left behind because the flight was oversold, even though everything was in order.

How much ANA pays for a Europe–Tokyo flight
Every route between Europe and Japan is far longer than 3,500 km, so the sum is fixed at €600 per passenger, in economy or business alike.
| ANA flight from | To | Amount |
|---|---|---|
| Frankfurt or Munich | Tokyo | €600 |
| Paris or Brussels | Tokyo | €600 |
| Milan Malpensa or Stockholm | Tokyo Haneda | €600 |
Two of you landed at Haneda four hours late? That is €1,200 between you. Children with their own seat receive the full amount too.
ANA flight delayed: steps to take before you board
On long-haul flights the time that counts is when the doors open in Tokyo. Before and during the wait:
- Save your boarding pass, including the version in the ANA app.
- Ask the ground staff for the reason behind the delay.
- Keep the messages ANA sends about the disruption.
- Write down the actual time you arrive in Japan.
- Hold on to receipts for food and transport you paid for yourself.
Help at the airport
| Route length | Meals after |
|---|---|
| Up to 1,500 km | 2 hours |

| Over 5 hours | Abandon the trip and get the fare back |
Missed connection at Haneda
Flying on to Osaka, Sapporo or elsewhere in Asia on the same ticket? What matters is your delay at the final destination and the distance from Europe to it. Full details on the delayed ANA flight page.
ANA flight cancelled: your options
When ANA drops a departure from Europe, for instance after a seasonal schedule change, you are always entitled to care and to a choice between two remedies. Compensation comes on top if the warning came late.
Always owed when a flight is cancelled.
If you were told less than 14 days before leaving Europe.
| Notice | Compensation |
|---|---|
| 14 days or more | No |
| 7-13 days | Yes, unless the new flight leaves no more than 2 hours earlier and lands within 4 hours |
| Under 7 days | Yes, unless the new flight leaves no more than 1 hour earlier and lands within 2 hours |
Departure moved. A significant retiming shortly before the flight can count as a cancellation. Full guide on the cancelled ANA flight.
ANA overbooking
If you are turned away in Frankfurt, Paris or another European airport because there are no seats left, the €600 is due at once, together with rerouting. It is not owed if boarding was refused for reasons of your own, such as an expired passport or reaching the gate after it closed. If you volunteer to give up your seat in return for benefits offered by ANA, what you agreed applies.

Strikes and ANA
A walkout by ANA pilots or crew that grounds a flight from Europe does not let the airline off the hook: the EU Court of Justice made that clear in case C-28/20. A strike by European air traffic controllers, however, is extraordinary.
ANA said no? Reasons worth checking
Maintenance is an ordinary risk for any carrier.
EU Court of Justice, case C-549/07It only counts if it genuinely affected that flight at that time.
Correct if ANA operated it: EU 261 does not apply.
Return flights, Heathrow and codeshares with Lufthansa
Tokyo–Europe flights operated by ANA fall outside the regulation. On routes between Japan and Europe, though, ANA works closely with Lufthansa, Austrian and SWISS: if your NH-coded flight was actually operated by one of those European airlines, the operating carrier is what counts and compensation may be due even on departures from Tokyo. ANA flights out of London Heathrow are covered by UK261, overseen by the CAA.
How to claim compensation from ANA
Write to customer service via ana.co.jp yourself; if refused, turn to the national enforcement body of the country where the flight departed, or to the courts.
Claim, formal demand and court action with our own lawyers. You pay only if you are paid: 25% + VAT, so €417 net out of €600. Legal costs are ours, even if we lose.
Already turned down?
Forward ANA's reply: we check whether the circumstance cited was truly extraordinary and, if not, start again with a formal demand.

How quickly ANA pays
If ANA accepts, payment usually takes a few weeks. If it rejects the claim or stays silent, a formal demand and sometimes court action are needed, which adds a few months. We update you by email at each stage and send your share by bank transfer as soon as ANA pays.
ANA baggage problems
