In short

  • Delay: if you arrive 3 hours or more late, BA Cityflyer owes €250 to €600 per person, depending on the distance.
  • Cancellation: you are owed compensation if you were told less than 14 days before departure, on top of a ticket refund or an alternative flight.
  • Not owed for extraordinary circumstances (severe weather, air traffic control strikes). Technical faults and strikes by the airline's own staff usually are not extraordinary.
  • With DelayFlight24 you pay nothing upfront: if BA Cityflyer pays, you keep €173.75 out of €250 or €278 out of €400.

BA Cityflyer compensation: which flights qualify

BA Cityflyer is the British Airways subsidiary based at London City Airport. Its fleet of Embraer 190 jets serves around thirty European destinations, from Amsterdam, Dublin and Zurich to Florence, Nice, Madrid, Málaga and Palma. Flights carry BA numbers, with "operated by BA Cityflyer" on the booking.

Holding a UK licence, British Airways Cityflyer Limited no longer counts as an EU airline after Brexit. The EU Regulation 261/2004 covers its flights departing from an airport in the EU, Switzerland, Norway or Iceland, such as Amsterdam to London City. Flights leaving the UK, including domestic hops to Edinburgh or Glasgow, fall under UK261, the British version of the same rules, paid in pounds.

Delayed flight

You reach your final destination 3 hours or more behind schedule, measured when the doors open.

3+ hours on arrival

Cancelled flight

Your return from Zurich or Florence is axed with under two weeks' notice and no close alternative.

Under 14 days' notice

Bumped

You checked in on time with a valid ticket but were refused boarding against your will.

Owed straight away

No compensation

Genuine extraordinary circumstances, such as dense fog or an air traffic control strike, which BA must prove.

How much BA Cityflyer pays per passenger

Distance decides the amount, not the fare or Club Europe. From the EU it is paid in euros:

Distance BA Cityflyer routes into London Compensation
Up to 1,500 km Amsterdam–London City, Dublin–London City, Florence–London City, Madrid–London City €250
1,500 to 3,500 km Málaga–London City, Faro–London City €400
Over 3,500 km None: the network is European only €600

On UK departures the UK261 equivalents are £220, £350 and £520. Every passenger on the booking claims separately, and children with their own seat get the full amount: a family of four arriving from Faro three and a half hours late is owed €1,600 between them.

BA Cityflyer flight delayed: what to do

Each Embraer flies several rotations a day out of London City, so a morning hiccup knocks on. What counts is when the first door opens, not touchdown.

  1. Keep your boarding pass in the British Airways app or on paper.
  2. Screenshot every notification, including the reason BA gives for the delay.
  3. Note the time you got off the aircraft.
  4. Keep receipts for food or taxis if no vouchers were handed out.
  5. Don't take Avios or vouchers instead of cash before you know your entitlement.

Meals and hotel while you wait

Distance Care from
Up to 1,500 km 2 hours
1,500 to 3,500 km 3 hours
Over 3,500 km 4 hours
Over 5 hours You may abandon the trip and get your fare back

Missed connection in London

Florence to London City on one booking with an onward BA flight? The delay is measured at your final destination and the amount uses the whole distance. Separate tickets are assessed one by one. More on our page about a delayed BA Cityflyer flight.

BA Cityflyer flight cancelled: refund and compensation

Many Cityflyer routes are seasonal and frequencies get trimmed. Taking the refund doesn't waive compensation.

Refund or rebooking

Always due: you choose between your money back and another flight.

Fixed compensation

On top, when the notice came less than 14 days before departure.

Notice given Compensation
14 days or more No, only refund or rebooking
7 to 13 days Yes, unless the new flight leaves no more than 2 hours earlier and lands less than 4 hours later
Under 7 days Yes, unless the new flight leaves no more than 1 hour earlier and lands less than 2 hours later

Retimed flight. A big schedule change announced close to departure can legally amount to a cancellation. See our page on a cancelled BA Cityflyer flight.

Bumped from a BA Cityflyer flight

With roughly a hundred seats per jet, overselling occasionally leaves someone behind. If you didn't volunteer, compensation is due on the spot as well as a new flight. It isn't owed if boarding was refused for your own reasons, such as invalid documents. Read our guide to BA Cityflyer overbooking.

BA Cityflyer strikes

A walkout by the airline's own pilots or cabin crew is part of running an airline, so it doesn't excuse BA from paying (CJEU case C-28/20). French air traffic control strikes, which regularly hit routes to Nice, Bergerac and Chambéry, are different: you keep care and a refund, but not compensation.

BA Cityflyer rejected your claim? Common reasons

Usually payable
"Technical fault"

Maintenance and repairs are part of normal operations.

CJEU, case C-549/07
It depends
"Industrial action"

Airline staff strike: yes. Air traffic controllers: no.

CJEU, case C-28/20
Usually payable
"Crew shortage"

Rostering and standby crews are the airline's job.

Often not payable
"Fog or wind at London City"

Only if the weather really grounded your flight; we check airport records.

UK departures and domestic routes

From London City, Stansted, Edinburgh or Glasgow, UK261 applies, including on routes such as London City–Edinburgh. If BA won't pay, the escalation route runs through the Civil Aviation Authority or an approved dispute body. We'll tell you which rules apply.

BA Cityflyer compensation: frequently asked questions

Is BA Cityflyer covered by EU261?
Only partly. British Airways Cityflyer Limited is a UK airline, so since Brexit EU Regulation 261/2004 covers its flights departing from the EU, Switzerland, Norway or Iceland, for example Amsterdam or Florence to London City. Flights leaving the UK fall under UK261.
How much is BA Cityflyer delay compensation?
On flights from the EU: €250 per passenger up to 1,500 km, such as Florence or Madrid to London City, and €400 from 1,500 to 3,500 km, such as Málaga or Faro to London City. Under UK261 the amounts are £220, £350 and £520.
My London City to Edinburgh flight was 4 hours late. Can I claim?
Yes, potentially, under UK261, which applies to domestic UK flights. The delay must be 3 hours or more on arrival and not caused by extraordinary circumstances. Enter the flight and we'll check it.
Who handles claims for flights operated by BA Cityflyer?
British Airways. Cityflyer flights are sold under BA flight numbers and claims go through the online compensation form on ba.com. In our form, just enter the flight as shown on your booking.
My BA Cityflyer flight to Nice was cancelled because of a French air traffic control strike. Am I owed anything?
A strike by air traffic controllers is normally an extraordinary circumstance, so fixed compensation isn't due. You can still choose between a refund and a new flight, and you are entitled to meals and, if needed, a hotel while you wait.
BA offered me Avios instead of cash. Should I accept?
You don't have to. Compensation is payable in money unless you agree in writing to something else. Check what you're owed in cash before deciding.
I missed my connection in London after a late BA Cityflyer flight. How is compensation worked out?
If both flights were on one booking, what matters is your delay at the final destination, and the amount is based on the total distance. With separate tickets, each flight counts on its own.
What does DelayFlight24 charge for a BA Cityflyer claim?
Nothing up front. If we recover compensation we keep 25% + VAT, so you receive €173.75 of €250 or €278 of €400. If court action is needed, our lawyers handle it and we pay the legal costs, even if the case is lost.
How far back can I claim against BA Cityflyer?
EU261 sets no deadline of its own; the limit comes from national law in the country where the claim is brought, as the EU Court of Justice confirmed. Enter your flight date and we'll tell you if you're still in time.
