Georgian Airways compensation: flights to Tbilisi covered by EU rules
Georgian Airways is Georgia's privately owned flag carrier, based at Tbilisi International Airport. Georgia is outside the European Union, so Regulation (EC) 261/2004 only reaches its flights that depart from a European airport, such as Amsterdam, Vienna or Berlin. On the outbound leg to Tbilisi a disruption can be worth up to ā¬400 per passenger; the flight home is a different story.
Delayed arrival
Your flight from Europe lands in Tbilisi, or your final stop, 3 hours or more behind schedule.
From 3 hoursCancelled departure
Georgian Airways drops a flight from an EU airport with less than two weeks' warning.
Under 14 days' noticeNo seat for you
The flight is full at the gate and you are turned away, despite having everything in order.
Owed on the spotExclusions
Flights from Tbilisi into Europe, and causes genuinely beyond the airline's control.

How much Georgian Airways pays: ā¬250 or ā¬400
The amount is a flat rate tied to distance, not to the fare. Almost all the airline's European routes fall into the middle band.
| Georgian Airways route | Covered? | Amount |
|---|---|---|
| LarnacaāTbilisi | Yes, departs from Cyprus (EU) | ā¬250 |
| AmsterdamāTbilisi, BerlināTbilisi, ViennaāTbilisi | Yes, departs from the EU | ā¬400 |
| RomeāTbilisi, Milan BergamoāTbilisi | Yes, departs from Italy | ā¬400 |
| TbilisiāAmsterdam or TbilisiāVienna | No, non-EU airline flying into the EU | Not due |
Each traveller has a separate claim: three people on an AmsterdamāTbilisi flight that lands 4 hours late are owed ā¬1,200 in total. Children in their own seat count just like adults.
Georgian Airways delay: what to do at the airport
Lateness is measured when the cabin door opens in Tbilisi, not when the wheels touch the runway.
- Keep your boarding pass, printed or as a check-in screenshot.
- Ask the ground staff why the flight is late and note the answer and the time.
- Record when the doors open on arrival in Tbilisi.
- Save receipts for food and transport if nothing is offered.
- Sign nothing that swaps your compensation for a voucher.
Care on the ground while you wait
Meals and drinks are owed according to distance; if departure slips to the next day, a hotel and transfer too.
| Distance | Care due after |
|---|---|
| Up to 1,500 km, e.g. LarnacaāTbilisi | 2 hours |
| 1,500 to 3,500 km, e.g. ViennaāTbilisi | 3 hours |
| Over 3,500 km | 4 hours |
| Delay over 5 hours | You can choose not to fly and get your money back |
Travelling on beyond Tbilisi
If one ticket takes you from Tbilisi to another city and you reach the end of the journey 3 hours or more late, the amount is based on the full distance from your European starting point. With separate tickets only the flight out of the EU counts. Read more on our Georgian Airways delayed flight page.
Cancelled Georgian Airways flight: your rights
Take your fare back or travel to Tbilisi on another option.
Added when the cancellation reached you less than 14 days before the flight.
| When you were told | Compensation |
|---|---|
| 14 days or more ahead | No, just a refund or another flight |
| 7 to 13 days ahead | Yes, if the replacement leaves over 2 hours earlier or arrives 4 hours or more later |
| Under 7 days ahead | Yes, if the replacement leaves over 1 hour earlier or arrives 2 hours or more later |
Big schedule changes. Moving the departure by many hours shortly before travel can be treated as a cancellation. See our guide to a cancelled Georgian Airways flight.
Georgian Airways overbooking
Being left behind at Schiphol or Vienna because too many tickets were sold entitles you to full compensation, plus an alternative flight or a refund. Cases linked to the passenger, such as invalid travel documents, are excluded. More on Georgian Airways overbooking.
Strikes and Georgian Airways
Industrial action by the airline's own pilots or cabin crew is an internal business risk and does not normally release it from paying (EU Court of Justice, C-28/20). If air traffic control walks out instead, compensation falls away, though meals and rerouting are still owed.
If Georgian Airways says no: replies worth challenging
A fault arising in normal operations remains the airline's responsibility, unless it is a fleet-wide defect revealed by the manufacturer or the authorities.
EU Court of Justice, C-549/07With a small fleet, delays spread easily, but that alone is not enough: the original extraordinary cause must be proven.
Weather only excuses the airline if it actually grounded your flight at that time.
Flights to and from Georgia: what is not covered
Besides its European routes, Georgian Airways flies to Russia and Armenia and, in summer, to Batumi. None of these departs from the EU, so Regulation 261 does not apply. The same goes for any flight from Tbilisi to Europe: only the airline's own conditions of carriage apply.
Claiming from Georgian Airways: alone or with us
You write in English to a company based in Tbilisi and follow up every step. If that fails, you can contact the national enforcement body of the country where the flight departed, or go to court.
Complete the form and sign online, then we handle the claim, formal demand and court case with our own lawyers. You pay only if successful: 25% + VAT. Legal costs are on us, even if the case is lost.
Already had a refusal?
Forward us Georgian Airways' answer: we review it and, if needed, start again with a formal demand.
What to prepare
- BookingConfirmation or boarding pass.
- IDPassport or ID card for each passenger.
- EvidenceMessages received, photos, receipts.
How long you have to claim
The Regulation sets no deadline: the law of the country where you bring the claim applies (C-139/11). A trip to Georgia from a few years back may still qualify.
How long until you are paid
If Georgian Airways accepts, payment usually takes a few weeks; if a formal demand or court case is needed, several months. Once we receive the money we transfer your share: ā¬278 out of ā¬400, ā¬173.75 out of ā¬250.
Damaged or delayed baggage with Georgian Airways
Suitcases are covered by the Montreal Convention. Fill in a PIR at the Tbilisi baggage office before leaving and send your claim within 7 days for damage or within 21 days of getting the bag back for a delay.
