Mistral Air compensation: passenger flights ended in 2018, the airline is now Poste Air Cargo
Mistral Air is the Italian airline founded in 1981 by Carlo Pedersoli, better known as the film actor Bud Spencer, and later taken over by the Italian postal group Poste Italiane. Alongside mail and cargo work, it flew scheduled domestic routes in Italy and pilgrimage charters. It stopped carrying passengers in mid-2018 and has been called Poste Air Cargo since 1 October 2019, flying freight only. If a Mistral Air flight let you down, the company still exists under its new name, and that matters a great deal.
As an Italian carrier, Mistral Air was a European airline. Regulation (EC) 261/2004 covered its departures from Italy and also its flights into the EU from outside, such as Tirana–Brescia. Scheduled and charter flights were treated alike.

How much Mistral Air had to pay
The passenger network was made up of short hops, almost all in the €250 band. Only a few charters to the Iberian peninsula went beyond 1,500 km.
| Distance | Sample Mistral Air flights | Amount |
|---|---|---|
| Up to 1,500 km | Brescia–Naples, Brescia–Palermo, Brescia–Catania, Brescia–Tirana, Rome–Lourdes | €250 |
| 1,500 to 3,500 km | Rome–Santiago de Compostela | €400 |
| Over 3,500 km | No known passenger route | €600 |
Each passenger had an individual claim: a parish group of 30 on a Rome–Lourdes charter cancelled at the last minute would have been owed €7,500 in total, plus a replacement flight.
Delayed Mistral Air flight: what to gather now
Delay was counted on arrival, when the doors opened, and had to reach at least 3 hours. With every flight dating from before summer 2018, the priority is rebuilding the evidence:
- Booking or ticket showing the Mistral Air (M4) flight code.
- Boarding pass, even if the pilgrimage organiser handed it out.
- Travel itinerary from the agency, with the scheduled times.
- Messages or letters announcing the delay or cancellation.
- Receipts for meals, taxis or hotel nights you paid yourself.
Care you were entitled to
| Flight | Meals and drinks after |
|---|---|
| Up to 1,500 km (Brescia–Naples) | 2 hours |
| 1,500 to 3,500 km (Rome–Santiago) | 3 hours |
| Over 3,500 km | 4 hours |
| 5 hours or more | Cancel the trip and get a refund |
Connecting flights
On a single booking, the delay at the final destination was what counted. See our page on a delayed Mistral Air flight.
Cancelled Mistral Air flight
In 2018 Poste Italiane announced the end of all passenger flying, scheduled and charter. Anyone whose flight was scrapped had two separate rights:
Passenger's choice: the fare back or another flight to the same destination.
On top, whenever notice came less than 14 days ahead.
| Notice | Compensation |
|---|---|
| 14 days or more | Not due |
| 7 to 13 days | Due, unless the alternative left at most 2 hours early and landed less than 4 hours late |
| Under 7 days | Due, unless the alternative left at most 1 hour early and landed less than 2 hours late |
Retimed flights. A significant schedule change shortly before departure could count as a cancellation. Read our page on a cancelled Mistral Air flight.
Mistral Air overbooking
Even on a full charter, being refused boarding against your will triggered compensation immediately. Full guide to Mistral Air overbooking.
Strikes and Mistral Air flights
If Mistral Air's own staff walked out, compensation was still due (EU Court of Justice, case C-28/20). Italian national aviation strikes involving air traffic controllers or airport workers, by contrast, were outside events.
Did Mistral Air say no? Typical reasons
A fault arising from normal aircraft operation is not an extraordinary event.
EU Court of Justice, case C-549/07A business decision does not release the airline from obligations to people already holding tickets.
Weather that genuinely prevented the flight lets the airline off.
From Mistral Air to Poste Air Cargo: who answers today
Mistral Air did not go bust: it changed its name to Poste Air Cargo, a wholly owned Poste Italiane subsidiary headquartered in Rome with bases at Brescia and Rome Fiumicino. Claims for old passenger flights therefore go to Poste Air Cargo, which now runs only Boeing 737 freighters for the postal network.
Pilgrimage charters and Tirana flights
From 2007 Mistral Air flew pilgrimage charters linked to the Holy See to Lourdes, Fátima, Santiago de Compostela and Medjugorje. If the flight was part of a package, Regulation compensation stayed with the airline, while the organiser answered for the rest of the trip. Flights from Albania were covered too, because the carrier was European.
Claiming from Mistral Air: on your own or with us
Write to Poste Air Cargo quoting the old Mistral Air flight and, if that fails, go to the national enforcement body of the country of departure (ENAC for Italy) or the courts.
Send us the details and we check time limits and evidence. You pay only on success: 25% + VAT. Legal costs are ours, even if the case is lost.
Documents
- Ticket or charter voucherWith the date and flight number.
- IDFor every passenger.
- CorrespondenceNotices, airline replies, receipts.
Time limits
The Regulation sets no deadline: the law of the country where you claim decides (EU Court of Justice, case C-139/11). For flights that ended in 2018, time may already have run out: give us the date and we will check.
Payment times
If the company accepts what is owed, payment usually arrives within a few weeks. If it disputes the claim, a formal demand and court case take several months.
Baggage and Mistral Air
Lost or damaged bags fell under the Montreal Convention: a PIR at the airport and a written claim within 7 days for damage or 21 days for late delivery.
