Cathay Pacific compensation: up to €600 on flights from Europe
Cathay Pacific is Hong Kong's flag carrier, and almost every passenger we help with it was on a long-haul flight: we have handled more than 300 Cathay Pacific claims, covering over 400 travellers, most of them starting at Amsterdam, Frankfurt, Paris or London Heathrow. Every nonstop between Europe and Hong Kong is well over 3,500 km, so a 3-hour arrival delay or a last-minute cancellation usually puts €600 per passenger on the table.
Before you claim, check where your flight took off. Cathay Pacific is registered in Hong Kong and holds no EU operating licence, which makes it a non-EU airline. Under Regulation (EC) 261/2004 it only owes compensation on flights departing from the EU, Iceland, Norway or Switzerland. Frankfurt to Hong Kong is covered; Hong Kong back to Frankfurt is not. Departures from the UK fall under the British version of the same rules.
Delay
Your trip from Europe reaches its final destination, including any onward leg after Hong Kong, three hours or more late.
3+ hours at final arrivalCancellation
A departure from Europe was cancelled with under 14 days' warning and the replacement flight was not close to your original times.
Less than 14 days' noticeBumped off the flight
You held a confirmed seat and checked in on time, but the aircraft was full and you were left behind against your will.
Owed on the spotNo compensation
Flights leaving Hong Kong or any other non-EU airport, and disruption caused by a genuinely extraordinary event such as a typhoon closing the airport.
Non-EU departure or extraordinary eventConnecting itineraries can be confusing. Enter the airport you started from, your final destination and the date, and you will have an answer in two minutes. Check your Cathay Pacific flight.
How much Cathay Pacific pays on the routes we see most
The fare and cabin are irrelevant: Economy, Premium Economy and Business passengers receive the same sum. Only the distance from your departure airport to your final destination counts.
| Cathay Pacific route | Covered by EU261? | Amount |
|---|---|---|
| Amsterdam–Hong Kong | Yes, departs from the EU (over 9,000 km) | €600 |
| Frankfurt–Hong Kong | Yes, departs from the EU (over 9,000 km) | €600 |
| Paris–Hong Kong | Yes, departs from the EU (over 9,000 km) | €600 |
| London–Hong Kong | Yes, under UK rules (paid in pounds) | UK261 |
| Sydney–Hong Kong | No, a non-EU airline flying from outside Europe | — |
Compensation is due to every person on the booking, and children with their own seat count in full: a family of four whose Amsterdam–Hong Kong departure was cancelled at short notice could claim €2,400. Add the whole party in one go when you fill in our form.
Delayed Cathay Pacific flight: what to do
About 7 in 10 of the Cathay Pacific cases on our desk involve a delay, either at the European departure gate or during the transfer in Hong Kong before an onward flight to Asia or Australia. What matters is when the doors open at your final destination, not when you touch down in Hong Kong. While you wait:
- Keep every boarding pass, including the connecting one, so your full journey can be proven.
- Screenshot Cathay Pacific app alerts and keep the emails announcing new times: the stated reason often changes later.
- Write down the door-opening time at your final airport.
- Ask the Cathay Pacific desk for meal vouchers, and keep receipts if you pay for food, transport or a hotel yourself.
- Do not swap your claim for Asia Miles until you know what you are owed in cash.
Meals, hotels and care while you wait
On departures from Europe, Cathay Pacific must provide food and drink and, if you cannot leave until the next day, a hotel room plus transfers. On Europe–Hong Kong flights the 4-hour threshold almost always applies.
| Flight distance | Care after |
|---|---|
| Up to 1,500 km | 2 hours |
| 1,500 to 3,500 km | 3 hours |
| Over 3,500 km (all Europe–Hong Kong routes) | 4 hours |
| Delay over 5 hours | You can abandon the trip and get the fare back |
Missed connection in Hong Kong
On a single booking such as Amsterdam–Hong Kong–Sydney, a late first leg that makes you miss the onward flight and reach Sydney three or more hours behind schedule is assessed on the whole journey. With two separate tickets, only the flight out of Europe counts. More on our page about Cathay Pacific delay compensation.
Cancelled Cathay Pacific flight: refund, rebooking and compensation
Roughly one in four Cathay Pacific claims we manage concerns a cancellation. Accepting a new flight or your money back does not rule out compensation: they are separate entitlements.
You choose: the earliest alternative to your destination, travel on a later date of your choice, or a full refund of the ticket.
Payable on top when a departure from Europe was cancelled less than 14 days before the flight.
| When you were told | Compensation |
|---|---|
| 14 days or more ahead | Not due: only rebooking or refund |
| 7 to 13 days ahead | Due, unless the new flight leaves no more than 2 hours earlier and lands less than 4 hours later |
| Under 7 days ahead | Due, unless the new flight leaves no more than 1 hour earlier and lands less than 2 hours later |
Retimed flights. On a long-haul trip even a departure brought forward by a few hours can wreck a connection. The EU Court of Justice treats a major schedule change notified late as a cancellation. Read more about Cathay Pacific cancellation compensation.
Cathay Pacific overbooking and denied boarding from Europe
Denied boarding is rare in our Cathay Pacific files, but it does happen on busy flights to Hong Kong. The airline must ask for volunteers first; if you are refused boarding against your will despite a confirmed seat and on-time check-in, compensation is owed immediately, alongside a new flight.
It is not overbooking if you are stopped because your visa or passport is not valid for your final destination. See our guide to Cathay Pacific overbooking and denied boarding.
Strikes and typhoons: when Cathay Pacific has to pay
If pilots or cabin crew employed by Cathay Pacific walk out, compensation is normally due: the EU Court of Justice regards a strike by the airline's own staff as part of its ordinary business (case C-28/20). Air traffic control strikes and typhoons that shut Hong Kong airport are extraordinary, though the airline still has to show they actually hit your flight.
Cathay Pacific rejected your claim? The usual reasons
Cathay Pacific refusals tend to point at Hong Kong weather or operational issues. Here is how they stand up.
A fault found during routine checks before take-off is part of running an airline. Hidden design defects flagged by the manufacturer are the exception.
EU Court of Justice, case C-549/07Extraordinary if the airport was really closed or restricted at the time of your flight. A general warning issued days earlier does not excuse a cancellation made for other reasons.
A knock-on delay from the previous rotation is not extraordinary in itself, unless something extraordinary caused it in the first place.
Cathay Pacific flights that are not covered
As a Hong Kong airline, Cathay Pacific is bound by the EU rules only when you fly out of Europe. In practice:
- the return from Hong Kong to Europe is not covered, even on a return ticket
- flights between Hong Kong and Asia or Australia count only as part of a single booking that started in Europe
- departures from London and Manchester fall under UK261, with amounts in pounds
- HK Express, the group's low-cost airline, flies under its own code and does not serve Europe
Flew with Cathay Dragon before 2020? It stopped flying and its routes passed to Cathay Pacific and HK Express. If a CX-numbered flight was operated by another oneworld airline, the claim goes to the operating carrier: just tell us in the form.
Claiming from Cathay Pacific: on your own or with us
You can write to Cathay Pacific yourself, for free, through the customer support section of its website, quoting your booking reference, flight number and passenger names.
It costs nothing, but you handle the back-and-forth with a Hong Kong airline. After a refusal you can go to the national enforcement body of the country your flight left from, or to court, at your own time and cost.
Fill in the form and sign online in minutes. We handle the claim, the formal demand and any court case with our own lawyers. You pay only if you win: 25% + VAT. Legal costs are ours, even if the case is lost.
If Cathay Pacific has already turned you down
Send us the reply you received. We compare the reason with weather and operational records for that day and, if the refusal is unfounded, start again with a formal letter before action.
What to have ready
- E-ticket or boarding passesFor every leg, including the connection.
- PassportFor each traveller, children included.
- Cathay Pacific messagesEmails and alerts about the delay or cancellation, plus expense receipts.
Time limits for a claim
Regulation 261 sets no deadline of its own: the law of the country where you bring the claim decides, as the EU Court of Justice confirmed (case C-139/11). Was your Hong Kong trip a few years ago? You may still be in time: enter the date and we will check.
How long Cathay Pacific compensation takes
If Cathay Pacific accepts the claim, payment usually arrives within a few weeks. If it refuses, a formal demand and sometimes court action follow, which adds a few months. We update you by email and, once the money arrives, transfer your share to your bank account: on €600 you receive €417.
Lost or damaged luggage with Cathay Pacific
Baggage is governed by the Montreal Convention, not by Regulation 261. Get a Property Irregularity Report (PIR) at the arrival airport before leaving, then write to Cathay Pacific within 7 days for damage, or within 21 days of getting the bag back for a delay.
