Ceiba Intercontinental compensation: when the EU rules apply
Ceiba Intercontinental is the state-owned airline of Equatorial Guinea, founded in 2007 and based at Malabo airport. It is still flying, mainly on domestic and regional routes in West Africa, while the government has spent several years weighing up a privatisation. For travellers between Europe and Equatorial Guinea, the key route is Madrid–Malabo, where you may be owed €600 per passenger.
Ceiba is not a European airline, so on its own account Regulation (EC) 261/2004 only binds it on flights departing the EU. What really matters, though, is who actually operates the aircraft, and that is what makes the Madrid route different.

Madrid–Malabo: who operates the flight and why it matters
Airlines from Equatorial Guinea are on the list of carriers banned from operating in EU airspace. That is why, since 2022, the Madrid–Malabo service sold by Ceiba has been flown with aircraft and crew from Spain's Wamos Air. When a European airline operates the flight, the Regulation covers it in both directions, including Malabo to Madrid, and the claim goes to the operating airline. Its name appears on your booking next to the flight number.
How much you can claim with Ceiba Intercontinental
| Flight | Covered? | Amount |
|---|---|---|
| Madrid–Malabo (over 4,000 km) | Yes, it departs from Spain | €600 |
| Malabo–Madrid operated by a European airline | Yes, the operator counts | €600 |
| Malabo–Bata and regional flights in Africa | No, non-EU airline outside Europe | — |
The amount applies per passenger, including children with their own seat: four people on Madrid–Malabo add up to €2,400.
Flight to Malabo delayed: what to do
Keep your boarding pass and booking, note when the doors open on arrival and hold on to receipts for food and transport. After 4 hours' wait at Madrid you are entitled to meals and, if departure moves to the next day, a hotel; after 5 hours you can abandon the trip and get your fare back. Ceiba flight cancelled: refund plus compensation
Always owed after a cancellation: you choose.
Added if notice came less than 14 days ahead and the replacement misses the set time limits.
Route suspended or timetable overhauled? A big change to the departure time notified shortly before travel may also count as a cancellation. Details on our cancelled Ceiba flight page.
Overbooking on the flight to Equatorial Guinea
If you are refused boarding in Madrid because the flight is full, compensation is due straight away along with an alternative flight. It is not due if you lacked the visa or documents required to enter Equatorial Guinea. Read our guide to overbooking and denied boarding.
Strikes and other excuses on Ceiba flights
A strike by staff of the airline operating the flight does not excuse it from paying (case C-28/20); an air traffic control strike does.
Maintenance is an ordinary risk for whoever operates the flight, leased aircraft included.
EU Court of Justice, case C-549/07On Ceiba flights that never touch Europe, the Regulation does not apply.
How to claim: on your own or with us
You need to work out whether to write to Ceiba or the operator and handle any refusal yourself, possibly via the national enforcement body of the country where the flight departed or the courts.
We identify the right airline and handle the claim, formal demand and court action with our own lawyers. You only pay if you win: 25% + VAT. Legal costs are ours, even if the case is lost.

- PassportFor each passenger.
The Regulation sets no deadline: the time limits of the country where you claim apply (case C-139/11). Enter your flight date and we will tell you whether you are in time.
Payment times and luggage
If the airline accepts, payment usually arrives within a few weeks; with a formal demand or court case it takes several months. From €600 you keep €417. Lost or damaged bags fall under the Montreal Convention: fill in a PIR at the airport and write to the airline within 7 days for damage and within 21 days for delay.
