Sundair is a German charter carrier headquartered in Stralsund, flying Airbus A320s from Berlin Brandenburg, Bremen and Dresden to sunshine destinations such as Mallorca, the Greek islands and the Canaries. Since 2023 the tour operator Schauinsland-Reisen has held a majority stake. Because Sundair is an EU airline, Regulation (EC) 261/2004 covers both its departures from the EU and its flights into Germany from non-EU countries.

How much Sundair pays: usually €400

Almost every Sundair route links Germany with the Mediterranean or the Atlantic islands, so most passengers fall into the €400 band.

The Canaries are EU territory, so even where the distance tops 3,500 km, as on Berlin–Gran Canaria, the cap stays at €400. Each passenger is entitled, including children with their own seat.

Delayed Sundair flight: what to do

Keep your boarding pass and the package holiday confirmation if you booked through a travel agent.

Sundair overbooking

A walkout by Sundair's own pilots or cabin crew does not release the airline from paying (EU Court of Justice, C-28/20). A strike by security staff at German airports, by contrast, is an extraordinary circumstance.

If you booked a package holiday, delay and cancellation compensation is still owed by Sundair as the operating airline. And since Sundair is an EU carrier, the return leg Damascus–Berlin is covered too. In Germany, passenger rights are enforced by the Luftfahrt-Bundesamt (LBA).

Is Sundair an EU airline?

Yes. Sundair GmbH is based in Stralsund, Germany, so EU 261 applies to its departures from the EU and to its flights arriving in Germany from outside the EU, such as the return from Damascus.

How much is Sundair compensation for a 3-hour delay?

On most of the Sundair network it is €400 per passenger, because routes from Germany to Greece, Syria or the Canaries exceed 1,500 km. For flights within the EU over 3,500 km, such as to the Canaries, the maximum stays at €400.

I booked a Schauinsland package. Who pays compensation?

The airline that operated the flight, Sundair, owes the EU 261 compensation even when the flight was part of a package. Other problems with the trip, such as the hotel, are a matter for the tour operator.

Sundair brought my flight forward by several hours. Can I claim?

Possibly. A significant schedule change announced shortly before departure can be treated as a cancellation. Enter your flight details and we will check.

If the cause was a genuine airspace closure or safety risk, it is usually an extraordinary circumstance and compensation is not due. You still have the right to a refund or an alternative flight.
