Croatia Airlines compensation for delays, cancellations and overbooking
Croatia Airlines is Croatia's flag carrier: it flies out of Zagreb and, in summer, links Split, Dubrovnik and Zadar with the rest of Europe. We have already helped more than 40 Croatia Airlines passengers, mainly on routes touching Dubrovnik, Split and Zagreb. If your flight left hours late, was called off or you were bumped, compensation is €250 per person on most of its European routes.
Croatia joined the European Union in 2013 and Croatia Airlines holds a Croatian licence, which makes it an EU carrier. Regulation (EC) 261/2004 therefore applies to every flight it operates out of the EU, to domestic Croatian flights and to flights into Croatia from outside the bloc.
Delay
You reach Zagreb, Split, Dubrovnik or your final destination at least three hours late.
From 3 hoursCancellation
The flight is dropped with less than 14 days' warning and no replacement on near-identical times.
Short noticeNo seat for you
You are at the gate on time with a boarding pass, but the flight was sold beyond capacity.
Owed on the spotExclusions
A violent bora wind closing the airport, an air traffic control strike or a security emergency: events the airline could not prevent.

How much compensation Croatia Airlines pays
Almost the whole Croatia Airlines network is under 1,500 km, so the typical figure is €250 per passenger. Ticket price is irrelevant; the distance between departure airport and final destination decides.
| Distance | Croatia Airlines routes in our claims | Amount |
|---|---|---|
| Up to 1,500 km | Dubrovnik–Zagreb, Zagreb–Dubrovnik, Split–Frankfurt, Zurich–Dubrovnik, Paris–Split, Paris–Zagreb | €250 |
| 1,500 to 3,500 km | Trips connecting in Zagreb on a single booking to a more distant destination | €400 |
| Over 3,500 km | Only on a through ticket connecting with a long-haul flight | €600 |
Everyone in your party has their own claim: four people on a Paris–Split flight arriving four hours late adds up to €1,000. Children with their own seat count the same as adults. Any Miles & More miles offered cannot replace cash unless you agree.
Croatia Airlines flight delayed: what to do
Half of the Croatia Airlines claims we handle are about delays, often on summer services to and from the Dalmatian coast. The delay is measured when the doors open at your arrival airport. At the airport:
- Save your boarding pass with the OU flight number, digital copies included.
- Ask for the reason in writing at the Croatia Airlines desk or from the handling agent.
- Record the real arrival time; boards at Dubrovnik and Split refresh quickly, so take a photo.
- Keep receipts for meals, missed ferries or taxis caused by the delay.
- Sign nothing that swaps your compensation for miles or vouchers.
What Croatia Airlines owes you while you wait
Meals and drinks in proportion to the wait and, if you fly the next day, a hotel and transport, regardless of compensation.
| Distance | Care from |
|---|---|
| Up to 1,500 km | 2 hours |
| 1,500–3,500 km | 3 hours |
| Over 3,500 km | 4 hours |
| Wait of 5 hours or more | Cancel the trip and get the ticket refunded |
Missed connection in Zagreb
Many Croatia Airlines journeys run through Zagreb, Paris to Dubrovnik for example. On one booking, what matters is the delay at your final destination and the total distance; with separate tickets each leg stands alone. More on Croatia Airlines delay compensation.
Croatia Airlines flight cancelled: refund and compensation
Cancellations are a big share of our files: around 4 in 10 Croatia Airlines claims. They often follow reshuffles of the seasonal timetable. Keep two rights apart:
Take your money back or travel on another flight, including at a later date of your choosing.
Payable on top when the cancellation was announced less than 14 days ahead.
| Notice | Compensation owed? |
|---|---|
| 14 days or more | No; refund or alternative flight still apply |
| 7–13 days | Yes, unless the flight offered leaves at most 2 hours earlier and lands less than 4 hours later |
| Under 7 days | Yes, unless the flight offered leaves at most 1 hour earlier and lands less than 2 hours later |

Croatia Airlines overbooking
About 8 in 100 Croatia Airlines claims we see involve denied boarding. If you are left behind because the flight is full, compensation is due straight away, along with rerouting or a refund. It does not apply if you reach the gate late or with invalid documents. See our guide to Croatia Airlines overbooking.
Croatia Airlines strikes: who pays
When the airline's own pilots or cabin crew stop work, compensation is normally owed: the EU Court of Justice treats such action as a business risk (case C-28/20). A strike by Croatian or foreign air traffic controllers rules out compensation, though care and refunds are still due.
Croatia Airlines refused to pay? What really holds up
Even during the switch to Airbus A220 aircraft, technical problems remain the airline's responsibility.
EU Court of Justice, case C-549/07A vague phrase that often covers reshuffles or crew shortages. Neither is extraordinary.
Croatia Airlines staff: normally payable. Air traffic control: not payable.
EU Court of Justice, case C-28/20Strong wind at Dubrovnik or Split can genuinely halt flights. We check whether it did on that day, at that hour.
Zagreb, Star Alliance and connections with Lufthansa
Croatia Airlines has been in Star Alliance since 2004 and uses the Miles & More programme. Many passengers therefore reach Croatia on one ticket combining a Lufthansa, SWISS or Austrian flight with a Croatia Airlines flight. The claim goes to the airline that operated the delayed flight, but the amount is based on the whole journey.
- Domestic Zagreb–Dubrovnik or Zagreb–Split flights: covered like any EU flight.
- Flights to and from Switzerland, such as Zurich–Dubrovnik: Switzerland applies the same rules.
- Flights into Croatia from non-EU countries: covered, because Croatia Airlines is an EU carrier.
Claiming from Croatia Airlines: alone or with DelayFlight24
Croatia Airlines takes claims through the form on its passenger rights page or by post to its Customer Relations department in Zagreb.
Free, but you supply bank details, booking reference and every passenger's name, then chase the answer. If that fails, turn to the national enforcement body of the country where the flight departed (in Croatia, the Croatian Civil Aviation Agency) or the courts.
Two minutes to complete our form. We handle the claim, formal demand and court action with our own lawyers. Our fee is 25% + VAT, only once compensation is paid; legal costs stay with us even if we lose.

Send us Croatia Airlines' reply: the stated reason often fails once checked against the flight data.
Useful documents
- E-ticket or boarding passWith the six-character booking reference.
- ID for each passengerPassport or ID card, minors included.
- Notices and expensesCancellation emails, schedule-change texts, receipts.
How long you have to claim
The time limit is not in the Regulation but in the national law of the country where you take action, as the EU Court of Justice confirmed (case C-139/11). A Croatian holiday from a few summers ago may still be claimable: check the date.
How long Croatia Airlines takes to pay
When Croatia Airlines accepts the claim, payment usually follows within a few weeks. If a formal demand or court case is needed, expect a few months. Once the money reaches us, we transfer your share.
Delayed or damaged baggage on a Croatia Airlines flight
Lost or damaged suitcases fall under the Montreal Convention. File a PIR at the baggage desk before leaving, then write to Croatia Airlines within 7 days for damage and within 21 days of redelivery for delay.
