Luxair compensation: when your flight is worth €250, €400 or €600
Luxair is the national airline of the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg. From its base at Luxembourg Findel it flies to business and leisure destinations across Europe and its LuxairTours holiday flights reach North Africa, Egypt and Cape Verde. We have handled around 50 Luxair claims so far, mostly on routes linking Luxembourg with Spain and Portugal. If your flight landed 3 hours late, was cancelled shortly before departure or you were bumped, you could be owed €250 to €600 per passenger.
Luxair S.A. is licensed in Luxembourg, which makes it an EU carrier. Under Regulation (EC) 261/2004 you are protected on every Luxair flight leaving the EU and on flights coming back into the EU, for example from London, Marrakech or Cape Verde.
Late arrival
You reach your final destination at least 3 hours after the time shown on your booking.
3 hours or moreCancelled flight
Luxair told you less than two weeks before departure and the replacement flight's times were not close to the original.
Under 14 days' noticeBumped
The flight was full and you were refused boarding despite a valid ticket and arriving on time.
Payable straight awayNo compensation
Events outside Luxair's control, such as a genuine storm or an air traffic control strike, which the airline has to prove.

How much Luxair pays on its routes
Fare class and ticket price make no difference, and award seats booked with Miles & More miles qualify too. Only the distance between your departure airport and final destination counts.
| Distance | Luxair routes | Amount |
|---|---|---|
| Up to 1,500 km | Madrid–Luxembourg, Barcelona–Luxembourg, Luxembourg–London City | €250 |
| 1,500 to 3,500 km | Lisbon–Luxembourg, Luxembourg–Marrakech | €400 |
| Over 3,500 km | Luxembourg–Sal (Cape Verde) | €600 |
Each person on the booking has a separate claim. A couple travelling with one child on a Lisbon–Luxembourg flight that arrived 4 hours late would be owed €1,200 between them, as children with their own seat receive the full adult amount.
Delayed Luxair flight: what to do at the airport
Over half of the Luxair cases we handle involve a delay. The clock stops when the first aircraft door opens rather than at touchdown, so a long taxi to the stand can push a borderline flight over 3 hours. Before you leave the terminal:
- Keep your boarding pass, printed or on your phone, as proof you travelled.
- Ask Luxair staff for the reason for the delay and write down what you were told and when.
- Take a photo of the arrivals board showing your actual landing time.
- Hold on to receipts for food, transport or a hotel you paid for yourself.
- Don't trade your rights for a voucher if accepting it means giving up cash compensation.
Meals, drinks and hotel while you wait
| Flight distance | Care from |
|---|---|
| Up to 1,500 km | 2 hours |
| 1,500 to 3,500 km | 3 hours |
| Over 3,500 km | 4 hours |
| Delay over 5 hours | You may cancel the trip and get your fare back |
Missed connection via Luxembourg
On a single booking, what matters is how late you reached your final destination, and the amount is based on the full journey distance. Two separate tickets are treated as two separate flights. More on our page about Luxair delay compensation.
Luxair cancelled your flight: refund and compensation
Close to 4 in 10 of the Luxair claims we receive start with a cancellation.
Always available after a cancellation: you choose between your money back and an alternative flight.
Due on top when Luxair warned you less than 14 days before departure.
| Notice given | Compensation |
|---|---|
| 14 days or more | No, but you keep the refund or rebooking |
| 7 to 13 days | Yes, unless the new flight leaves no more than 2 hours early and lands less than 4 hours late |
| Under 7 days | Yes, unless the new flight leaves no more than 1 hour early and lands less than 2 hours late |
Retimed flights. A big shift in departure time announced at short notice can count as a cancellation. Already had your fare refunded by Luxair? See if compensation is still due. Full details on our page about Luxair cancelled flights.
Denied boarding on Luxair
This is the least common issue among our Luxair cases, fewer than 1 in 10, but it does happen on busy weekend and holiday departures. If you are kept off a flight with a valid ticket and showed up on time, compensation is owed immediately alongside a new flight or a refund. Read more about Luxair overbooking and denied boarding.
Strikes and Luxair flights
When Luxair's own pilots, cabin crew or engineers walk out, the airline cannot treat it as an extraordinary circumstance: the EU Court of Justice sees staff strikes as part of normal business (case C-28/20). A strike by French air traffic controllers or by ground staff at a destination airport is different. No compensation is due then, although meals, rebooking or a refund still are.
Luxair rejected your claim? Common reasons explained
Rejection letters from Luxair usually point to something beyond its control.
Faults on a Boeing 737 or a Dash 8 turboprop are part of running a fleet, unless they stem from a manufacturing defect flagged by the maker or the authorities.
EU Court of Justice, case C-549/07Luxair staff on strike: usually payable. Air traffic controllers or airport workers: not payable.
EU Court of Justice, case C-28/20Knock-on delays from earlier rotations are not enough on their own. Luxair has to show what extraordinary event started the chain.
Only valid if the weather actually grounded your flight at that time. We check airport weather reports for the hour in question.
LuxairTours holidays and flights outside the EU
Package holiday flights sold by LuxairTours to Egypt, Tunisia, Morocco, Turkey or Cape Verde are operated by Luxair. Because Luxair is an EU airline, you are covered on the outbound leg and on the way home. The claim goes to the airline that operated the flight, not to the tour operator, and we deal with that for you.
How to claim from Luxair: on your own or with us
Luxair has an online contact form on its website for passenger rights requests.
Free, but you handle the correspondence and any refusal yourself. After that, the next step is the national enforcement body of the country your flight departed from (the CAA for UK departures) or the civil courts, at your own time and cost.
Two minutes to fill in the form and sign online. We take care of the claim, the formal demand and any court case with our own lawyers. You pay only if you win: 25% + VAT. Legal costs are ours, even if the case is lost.
If Luxair has already said no
You can still hand the case to us. We review the reason given and, if it does not hold up, restart with a formal letter before action.
Documents to have ready
- Booking confirmationThe Luxair or LuxairTours email, or your boarding pass.
- ID or passportFor each passenger, including children.
- Messages from LuxairDelay or cancellation texts and emails, plus expense receipts.
Time limits for a Luxair claim
The Regulation sets no deadline of its own: national rules in the country where you bring the claim apply, as the EU Court of Justice confirmed (case C-139/11). An older flight may still be claimable, so enter the date and we will tell you.
How long Luxair takes to pay
If Luxair accepts the claim, payment usually follows within a few weeks. When a formal demand or court action is needed, expect several months.
Lost or damaged luggage on Luxair
Baggage is covered by the Montreal Convention, not by the delay rules. File a Property Irregularity Report (PIR) at the airport before leaving, then write to Luxair within 7 days for damage and within 21 days of getting your bag back for a delay.
