DAT flight compensation: €250 for delays to Pantelleria and Lampedusa
DAT is a Danish regional airline best known in Italy for its Volidisicilia flights, which link the Sicilian islands of Pantelleria and Lampedusa with Palermo, Trapani and Catania under a public service contract. We have handled more than 140 DAT claims for over 200 passengers, almost all on these short island hops. If your turboprop landed 3 hours late or your flight to the island was scrapped at short notice, you may be owed €250 per person, on top of a refund or a new flight.
Because DAT A/S is licensed in Denmark, it is an EU airline. Regulation (EC) 261/2004 therefore protects you on every DAT flight leaving the EU and on DAT flights arriving in the EU from outside it.
Late arrival
You reached Lampedusa, Pantelleria or the Sicilian mainland at least 3 hours after the scheduled time.
3 hours or moreCancelled flight
DAT called off the flight less than 14 days before departure and offered no close alternative.
Under 14 days' noticeDenied boarding
The small aircraft was full and you were left behind, despite a valid ticket and arriving on time.
Payable at onceNot payable
Crosswinds or fog that genuinely made landing impossible, or an air traffic control strike. DAT has to prove it.

How much DAT pays per passenger
All the island routes are well under 1,500 km, so the standard figure is €250 each. The ticket price is irrelevant: only the distance to your final destination matters.
| Flight distance | DAT routes in our claims | Compensation |
|---|---|---|
| Up to 1,500 km | Palermo–Lampedusa, Palermo–Pantelleria, Trapani–Pantelleria, Lampedusa–Catania | €250 |
| 1,500 to 3,500 km | None among our DAT cases | €400 |
| Over 3,500 km | Not part of the DAT network | €600 |
Every traveller on the booking has a separate claim. A couple with two children whose Lampedusa–Palermo flight was cancelled on the day could receive €1,000 between them, as children with their own seat are treated like adults.
Delayed DAT flight: what to do at the airport
Around 7 in 10 DAT claims we see involve a delay, typically in summer when the same aircraft shuttles back and forth between Sicily and the islands several times a day. The clock stops when the aircraft door opens at your destination. A few practical steps:
- Hold on to your boarding pass, even a paper one issued at the Pantelleria or Lampedusa desk.
- Ask ground staff for the reason and keep any text messages from the airline.
- Photograph the arrivals screen showing the real landing time.
- Keep receipts for food, taxis or a room on the island if nobody looked after you.
- Don't sign away your rights in exchange for a seat on the next rotation.
Meals and hotel while you wait
Even when bad weather is to blame, DAT must provide refreshments and, for an overnight delay, a hotel and transport to it.
| Flight distance | Care starts after |
|---|---|
| Up to 1,500 km (all Sicilian routes) | 2 hours |
| 1,500-3,500 km | 3 hours |
| Over 3,500 km | 4 hours |
| Delay over 5 hours | You can cancel the trip and get your money back |
Missed onward flight from Palermo or Catania
If a single booking took you from the island via Palermo or Catania and the late DAT flight made you reach your final destination 3 or more hours late, the whole journey counts. With separate tickets, the missed connection is your own risk. See our page on DAT delay compensation.
Cancelled DAT flight: refund and compensation
Close to a quarter of our DAT files concern cancellations. Being rebooked onto the next flight does not cancel your right to compensation.
Due with any cancellation: you choose your money back or an alternative flight.
Added when DAT gave you less than 14 days' notice.
| Notice given | Compensation |
|---|---|
| 14 days or more | Not due; refund or rebooking still apply |
| 7 to 13 days | Due, unless the new flight leaves up to 2 hours early and lands within 4 hours of the original time |
| Under 7 days | Due, unless the new flight leaves up to 1 hour early and lands within 2 hours of the original time |
Timetable changes. A large shift in departure time announced shortly before the trip can count as a cancellation, according to the EU Court of Justice. Check your case or read about cancelled DAT flights.
DAT overbooking and denied boarding
On ATR turboprops with a few dozen seats, being bumped is uncommon: about 2 in 100 of our DAT claims. When it happens against your will, €250 is due immediately together with another flight. It is not due if you were refused for your own reasons, such as an expired ID card. More in our guide to DAT overbooking.
Strikes affecting DAT flights
Italian air transport strikes regularly disrupt flights to the islands. Walkouts by air traffic controllers or airport workers are extraordinary circumstances, so DAT owes care and a refund or rebooking but no compensation. A strike by DAT's own pilots or cabin crew is different: the EU Court of Justice treats it as part of normal airline business, so compensation is normally payable (case C-28/20).
DAT rejected your claim? Common reasons
On island routes the weather is the go-to explanation. Here is how the typical replies stand up.
Genuine if it stopped your flight. We check airport weather reports and whether other aircraft landed at that hour.
Repairs and maintenance are part of running an airline, except for hidden manufacturing defects.
EU Court of Justice, case C-549/07A delay carried over from the aircraft's previous flight only excuses DAT if an extraordinary event caused it in the first place.
DAT staff: usually payable. Controllers or airport staff: not payable.
EU Court of Justice, case C-28/20Volidisicilia, Voli delle Marche and DAT in Scandinavia
The Pantelleria and Lampedusa routes are awarded through a contract with ENAC, the Italian aviation authority. DAT has flown them since 2018, and the latest extension runs to 31 October 2026; for later flights, check your booking for the operating airline, because the claim always goes to the carrier that flew you. Since November 2025 DAT has also connected Ancona with Rome Fiumicino and Milan Linate under the Voli delle Marche brand. Outside Italy, the airline's main base is Copenhagen, with regional services in Denmark and Norway such as flights to Bornholm. All these routes are covered by EU261.
How to claim from DAT
You can contact DAT's customer service yourself through its official website, attaching your booking and boarding passes. Here's what each route involves.
No fee, but you manage the exchange with a Danish airline. If it refuses, you can turn to the national enforcement body of the country where the flight departed (ENAC for Sicily) or to the courts.
Two minutes and an online signature. We handle the claim, formal demand and litigation with our own lawyers. You only pay if you're paid: 25% + VAT, leaving you €173.75 of €250. Legal costs stay with us even if a case is lost.
If DAT has already refused
Send us the airline's email. If the reasoning is weak, we restart with a formal letter of demand.
Documents to have ready
- Booking or boarding passA photo of the desk receipt works too.
- Passport or ID cardFor each traveller, including children.
- DAT messagesDelay or cancellation texts and receipts for expenses.
Time limits
EU261 sets no deadline of its own; the national rules of the country where you bring the claim apply (EU Court of Justice, case C-139/11). A Lampedusa holiday from a few summers back may still qualify: enter the date.
How long DAT takes to pay
If DAT accepts, payment normally arrives within a few weeks. Where a formal demand or court case is needed, allow a few months. We transfer your share as soon as the money reaches us.
Lost or damaged luggage on DAT
Bags fall under the Montreal Convention rather than EU261. Fill in a PIR at the baggage desk before leaving the airport, then write to DAT within 7 days for damage and within 21 days of delivery for a delayed bag.
