China Southern compensation: flights from Paris, Amsterdam and London to Guangzhou
China Southern Airlines links Europe with Asia and Australia, nearly always via its home base at Guangzhou Baiyun. We have opened more than 100 claims against it, on behalf of over 130 travellers. What sets it apart in our files is the share of cancellations: 4 claims in 10 start with a flight that never took off, a high figure compared with the other airlines we handle.
The airline is based in Guangzhou and is not a European carrier. Under Regulation (EC) 261/2004 the departure airport therefore decides everything: take off from the EU, Switzerland, Norway or Iceland and you are protected; if the China Southern flight leaves from Guangzhou, Beijing or Bali, the EU rules do not apply.
Cancellation
Your flight out of Europe is axed and the airline tells you less than 14 days ahead.
Most common CZ problemLong delay
You reach the last stop on your ticket, say Sydney or Guangzhou, three hours or more behind schedule.
Threshold: 3 hoursSeat refused
You turn up on time with a valid visa and passport, but the flight is full and you stay behind.
Owed immediatelyExclusions
Flights departing outside Europe, and disruption caused by events truly beyond the airline's control.
No payoutThe quickest way to find out is to enter your flight: check your China Southern refund now.
China Southern payouts: why it is nearly always €600
The Regulation links the amount to kilometres, not to the fare. Every European route China Southern flies is long-haul.
| Kilometres | China Southern routes from the EU | Payout |
|---|---|---|
| Under 1,500 | None: the airline does not fly between European cities | €250 |
| 1,500-3,500 | None on its European network | €400 |
| Over 3,500 | Paris–Guangzhou, Amsterdam–Guangzhou, Paris–Sydney via Guangzhou | €600 |
Everyone on the booking gets their own payment: three people on a Paris–Guangzhou flight cancelled at the last minute can claim €1,800. Children with a seat of their own receive the full amount. In the form, enter the flight once and add your fellow travellers.
China Southern delay: the right moves
Just over half our China Southern claims concern a delay. It is measured at the final destination on the ticket, not at the transfer airport:
- Keep every boarding pass, including the one for the onward leg from Guangzhou.
- Download your itinerary from csair.com or the app: it shows the CZ number and the operating airline for each flight.
- Get the reason in writing at the Guangzhou transfer desk if you are rebooked there.
- Save receipts for any meals or transport you paid for yourself.
- Do not swap cash for miles or vouchers before checking what you are entitled to.
Care at the airport
On European departures China Southern must provide food and drink and, for an overnight wait, a hotel with transfers.
| Flight length | Care from |
|---|---|
| Up to 1,500 km | 2 hours |
| 1,500-3,500 km | 3 hours |
| Over 3,500 km | 4 hours |
| Over 5 hours | Cancel the trip and recover the fare |
Missed connection in Guangzhou
A typical case: Paris–Guangzhou runs late, the Sydney connection goes, and you land in Australia a day later. On one booking, compensation is due on the Paris–Sydney distance, so €600. If you bought the second leg separately, that departure from Guangzhou is not covered. More on our page about China Southern delay compensation.
China Southern flight cancelled: refund and compensation
At 4 claims in 10, this is the main issue. China Southern's email usually offers a new flight or a refund; it does not mention that cash compensation may also be due.
Owed for every cancellation: your money back, or travel on another flight.
If the flight was leaving Europe and you had less than two weeks' warning.
| Warning received | Compensation |
|---|---|
| Two weeks or more | Excluded: refund or alternative flight only |
| 7 to 13 days | Due, unless the alternative leaves no more than 2 hours earlier and lands within 4 hours of the original time |
| Under 7 days | Due, unless the alternative leaves no more than 1 hour earlier and lands within 2 hours of the original time |
Flight moved to another day. If China Southern pushes your departure to the next day and tells you late, EU case law may treat it as a cancellation. Read our guide to China Southern cancelled flight compensation.
Overbooking on China Southern
About 5 claims in 100: few, but it happens. If you are left at Charles de Gaulle or Schiphol with a valid ticket and did not volunteer, you are owed compensation at once plus a seat on another flight or a refund. Refusal over a missing visa gives no right to anything. Full details on our page about China Southern overbooking and denied boarding.
Strikes and cancelled China Southern flights
In our China Southern cases strikes mostly mean European industrial action: airport handling staff or air traffic controllers. The airline then owes no compensation, but must still look after you and let you choose between refund and rebooking. A walkout by the airline's own employees is different: the EU Court treats it as a normal business risk (case C-28/20).
China Southern says no? How to respond
The explanations we see most often in the airline's replies, and what they are really worth:
On a Guangzhou–Paris flight operated by China Southern the refusal is correct: EU rules do not cover non-EU departures of a Chinese carrier.
Cancelling to fill planes better or to rework the timetable is a commercial decision, not an extraordinary event.
Repairs and maintenance are part of any airline's ordinary activity, except hidden defects reported by the manufacturer.
Court of Justice of the EU, case C-549/07Only valid if the weather actually hit that flight or the aircraft due to operate it. We check the airport's weather records for the stated time.
London departures and flights within Asia: different rules
Some China Southern routes in our files follow other rules:
- London–Guangzhou: since Brexit, covered by the UK's own version of the rules, enforced by the CAA, with amounts in pounds; we deal with it for you
- Guangzhou–Paris and Guangzhou–Amsterdam: departures from China, outside the EU Regulation
- Bali–Hangzhou and other flights within Asia: no EU protection, even with a European passport
China Southern left the SkyTeam alliance on 1 January 2019 and now works through bilateral deals, for example with American Airlines. If a flight sold under a CZ code is operated by a European airline, you are protected on arrival in Europe as well.
XiamenAir, Chongqing Airlines and the group's hubs
The group also includes XiamenAir and Chongqing Airlines, and its main hubs are Guangzhou Baiyun, Beijing Daxing and Shenzhen. If you continue from Guangzhou with one of these airlines on the same ticket from Europe, the delay is measured on final arrival.
Claiming from China Southern: do it yourself or hand it to us
The airline accepts written complaints via the contact page on csair.com. How the two routes compare:
Free, but you answer every objection and document request yourself. If the answer stays no, you are left with the national enforcement body of the departure country or the courts.
Two minutes on the form and a digital signature. We run the formal demand and any court case with our lawyers. Fee of 25% + VAT only when you are paid; legal costs are ours even if we lose.
Already received a rejection?
We can pick it up from there: we read China Southern's reply and, if the flight was covered, challenge it with a formal letter.
Useful documents
- Full itineraryEvery leg on the ticket, including those after Guangzhou.
- ID for each travellerPassport or ID card, children included.
- Airline noticesThe cancellation email and the date it was sent are key to the notice period.
The deadline to claim
There is no time limit in the Regulation itself: the law of the country where you bring the claim decides, as the EU Court held in case C-139/11. A flight cancelled a few years ago may still be claimable: enter the date and we will check.
When the money arrives
If China Southern accepts the claim, a few weeks usually go by. If a formal demand or court case is needed, it can take a few months. Your amount, minus our fee, reaches you by bank transfer as soon as the airline pays us.
Lost or damaged bags on China Southern
Here the Montreal Convention applies, not Regulation 261. At the baggage desk of the arrival airport fill in a PIR straight away; then send a written complaint within 7 days if the case is damaged, or within 21 days of delivery if it arrived late.
